Ah, my reliable (NOT) OS is goofing up again (I think). Actually it's probably me. I am in the process of dubbing some of my old records and cd's to the computer for storage on a stand alone hard drive to feed my Pinnacle Show Center multimedia device. When going to the main "My Music" folder on my C drive all is well as you can see in image 1 below. When I go to a subfolder inside the "My Music" folder I get pictures of the associated folders, but no file name. I use thumbnails as my view. In Tile mode all folder names show up. I'm confused. This just started tonight. I have been doing this "work" off and on for quite some time with no previous problems like this. I don't get the problem on any other subfolders within the "My Music" folder (which makes me think it is something that I did somewhere along the way). Any suggestions? There are 93 folders in the "LP Copies" subfolder (if that makes a difference). It has more folders than any of the other subfolders.

It's not 64 bit.... my 32 bit old notebook had a spate of doing that... and I can't for the life of me remember how I fixed it. Googling may help. Mine was with the My Photo folder, it's specific to the 'fixed' folders.... racks brain.... nah, it's info I must have deleted from the brain archive.
I don't get the problem on any other subfolders within the "My Music" folder (which makes me think it is something that I did somewhere along the way).Try this:
1. Create a new folder at the same level to replace this folder
2. Copy all of the music files to the new folder
3. Delete the old folder
4. Rename the new folder to the old name
My goal here is to kill the hidden files in the folder. Windows XP drops all sorts of hidden files around as it moves and I suspect that one of these is corrupt or misconfigured. Be careful not to create any of those fifty bazillion character long filenames. They seem to be all too popular with the ripping crowd.

Something I had not realized until recently, and I have no idea where I heard or read it now (perhaps in a thread here) but "long file names" allows something like 256 characters, which would seem to be about as long as many documents. However, the long file name is actually the entire pathway name. With that understanding, some file names can start to approach the limit.

An interesting situation with the above problem. I created a file named "LPCopies2" and moved the contents of "LPcopies" into it and all was well. I then deleted "LPCopies" and renamed "LPCopies2" to "LPCopies". The problem reappeared and I had to go through the process again, this time I am going to leave the file as "LPCopies2". :(
