So my Hr20 install was yesterday. The installer hooked it up and verified it worked on regular and HD channels. It updated to the latest software version and then I watched about 15 minutes of Discovery HD (Picture looked awesome!), and then switched to a standard def channel. 2 minutes into the show the video began looping over and over and then the box rebooted. To my luck, it would get to the Directv + HD DVR logo, make a bunch of harddrive churning noises and then reboot itself. It continued to reboot itself over and over for about a half hour. I unplugged it and tried using the red reset switch next to the access card. Nothing seemed to help. Customer Service read through a laundry list of known items “Audio problems with Mpeg4, random reboots, etc.” I told her it sounded like it was having a hard time reading the harddrive (I could hear it churning over and over)… but she assured me that I must be hearing the fan since harddrives don’t make noise. Lol.

She said there was a known issue with the last software update and activating new receivers without it. That makes absolutely no sense to me, and I still believe it to be a hardware issue. Either way they are sending me a new one and asking me to ship this one back. <sigh> here goes a week without tv.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

That definently sounds more like a hard drive issue...

They can't stop the receivers from receiving the 0xCC, all HR20's will get it within a few hours of activation.

Could have very well been a hard drive issue. They certainly make some interesting noises when they experience problems. Unfortunately with any hard drive based device, you always have that small percentage of units that will be DOA. I'll be looking forward to when flash based mass storage reaches current hard drive capacities and you'll be able to plop one of those bad boys into the HR20!
