I've had E* for about 6 months (and D* for years) and had bought the equipment (311) outright to avoid a contract. However I'm about to move and need to pick one of the two and WAS going to go with E* but I want a DVR, the only problem is E* says go to your local retailer and buy one for $399. UH WHAT???? How am I any different from someone that calls up and agrees to their 18 month lease?

What's really irritating is that I know after the account has been shut off for a week they'll offer what I'm looking for......unfortunately it will be too late as I will have already commited to D* for moving me.

You have been with them for six months so you can't be a new customer. You fall between promotions so they told you the only thing they could which would apply to any other customer in the same situation.:)

Except that I've never used any promotion.

I ran into a similar brick wall with E*, but I found a way around it.

My girlfriend (now wife) moved in with me, and I moved her dish and receiver to my house. She didn't bother telling E*, because she didn't think she had to, and she owned the equipment. However, she did change the billing address with no questions asked.

About a year later, I wanted to upgrade to a DVR. So I called E*, to see if I could get in on a "free" one, by extending her contract. She had already been a customer for over three years, so she had no further obligation. As it turns out, she didn't own the equipment after all. She went through some ad in the paper, and they put her on the lease plan.

In any case, E* said you only get one "free" promotion in a lifetime, and she already got hers. I argued that she got nothing for free, since she doesn't own anything! No dice. So I talked to a manager. No go again.

So I said I'll have her cancel her subscription, and I'll start a new one in my name to get the free DVR. I was told the promotions are based on address and phone number, and since she changed her billing address to mine, I couldn't get it!

I was furious! I informed the person that although she lives here, we are not married, and I've never had their service, so I should certainly be considered a new customer. No go. So I asked for the guy's name, and then asked about their policy of discussing account details with someone other than the customer. He was a bit taken aback at that, and said he shouldn't be talking to me anymore.

At that point, I asked to be transferred to the new order department, because by that logic, I must be a new customer! Nope. They were not budging. I told him that he was about to lose a customer. Didn't care.

So I went to the website, signed up with my name, my cell phone number, and added an apartment number to my address. Presto! New customer, new account, free DVR - installer to arrive on Saturday. My girlfriend canceled her account on Friday.

I pulled her equipment out of the entertainment center, and removed the dish from the house. The installer showed on time (what?) and was thrilled to find that the "previous homeowner" must have had satellite service, because the mounting pad and cables were already in place. I also had all the cables to the TV and stereo ready to go (because I had downloaded the receiver manual from the web of course.) Quickest install he had ever done.

I'm sure E* would consider this cheating them somehow, but I didn't get anything that any other new customer would get, and they got a two year contract. They get almost $100/mo from me, so I don't feel bad about the deal at all.

And except for this issue, I've been happy with the service and the equipment. I later upgraded to a two tuner DVR I purchased on eBay, and by going through the CEO phone number I found here, it was no problem getting it activated.

So with a little creativity, you should be able to get what you want!

Thanks for the advise AZ, but I think I'm just going to stick with D* as I'm not in the mood to get creative to remain a customer.

You can always buy a 510 or 522 on ebay.

Not sure why you think you are entitled to promotions you don't qualify for simply because you've never signed up on a promotion.

If you have a DVR from Direct, and are happy with it, I don't see your quandry.

And I don't see why it's so hard to understand why there's no difference between customer A (me) with no commitment and customer B (never been a customer). That's the whole point of a commitment clause. Geez. I'll let you know how long it takes them to call me throwing DVRs etc. my way to come back after my cancel date (27th).

As to the D* DVR, the TiVo I have is my favorite for sure, but I'm only going to keep one of the two services and it WAS going to be E*......a programming issue.

The New Customer Promotions are designed to bring in NEW customers.

People born in New Mexico aren't Mexicans.

I live in Old Mexico, but I don't live in Mexico.

Except that I've never used any promotion. That's your mistake. You could have leased a DVR without commitment if you had been thinking when you signed up.

Be aware that going back to D* will likely involve a 24 month commitment just for signing up.

The competitive market will force Satellite to alter these policies because the cable co.'s will be waiting to pounce on these "new customer" policies.

A) They did nothing to entice me to sign up as I bought the equipment outright at the time.

B) I've been a D* customer for 10 years, the only commitment I'm facing (12 months) is IF I keep them and take advantage of the free install when I move next month.
