I remember the long convoluted post about this.. but what's the FINAL verdict?
Can one just go out and buy a 300gb external SATA drive and plug her in and double their DVR recording capacity?

not yet but you can get a 700 gig and replace the original and it will work

I recall Earl mentioning that we may see eSATA support much sooner than most anticipated.

eSATA is on the near horizon, don't have an exact time frame though

I'm actually looking more forward to replacing the HD with a solid state HD once their sizes go up and prices come down :D

Forget that... go Holographic... I was just reading in MacimumPC
300gb for $20 (the drive though is 15k)
Expecting multiple terrbytes when the technology is ready for consumer usage.

What is a solid state HD? Actually coming out? (Sounds like sci fi)

You have a USB thumb drive or ipod Nano? It's just a flash drive, but they're coming out with larger capacity drives that will interface with standard drive interfaces (IDE, SATA).
The only problem is solid state has a limited number of writes, so I'm not sure that a dvr would be a good application for them.

Todays hard drives are moving disks.....
Memory is "solid" state (aka similar to flash drives)..
So instead of the drive being a spinning platter.... look at it is basically one very big memory chip.

... with unacceptable writing time for DVR functioning :(
Do not expect in near future solid drive in DVR, especially HD models.

Earl, will this feature allow me to record on one HR20 and play back on another??? Right now I dual record everything since not sure which set I will watch them on.

I have no idea on how they are going to implement the DRM on the unit...

Do you think we will be able to use our own drives? Or will we have to purchase from D*
