I have been a DirecTV subscriber for about a month. To record shows I want to watch, I have been programming the satellite box to come on when a specific show starts, and programming my VCR to tape on channel 4. This works, but of course, you cannot watch anything else while the show is taping.

I was looking into non Tivo DVR's or DVD burners (as I don't really want to pay the $5 per month), but it looks like they will behave the same way. Is there any DVD burner or non Tivo DVR on the market that comes with a satellite compatible tuner that will allow me to tape something and watch something else during the taping?

I know you can build your own DVR using a PC and can download software for the programming. Is there any software that will behave similar to TIVO and allow you to tune the DVR to a specific channel besides channel 4?

The problem you'll run into here is that your satellite box can only tune one station at a time. So you can tape/dvr with the channel being tuned by the box, but have no other tuner that you can use to watch anything.

Don't be penny-wise and pound foolish. Building a pc to get DVR functionality
is like assembling a car to get transportation.

Forget the five bucks and get a dual-tuner DVR - you can thank me later.

One big difference between DVRs and VCRs is that while you're recording something live (and not watching it), you _can_ watch something you recorded earlier, even with a single-tuner DVR. And once you get used to easily skipping forward past commercials on everything you recorded, you may find it more difficult to sit through live programming again. :)

I completely agree with Nick.

It's been my experience that it's not until someone owns and actually uses a DVR that they then realize how much they need a DVR.

In that way, DVRs are much like heroin.

I mean that in a good way.

And I completely agree with Nick, too.

I agree with everyone get a DVR a Directv tivo would be best if you can get your hands on a R10 or other tivo unit. The R15 would work too but Tivo is better.

Well worth $5...
