Is there a 'proper' way to cancel service?

A recent talk (gone bad) to retention identified my cancellation fee as ~$220. I have no problem sending equipment back to D*, and understand I may be required to do that.

Thoughts?

Basically, I'm not getting what I was promised, so I'm ready to say goodby.

There's no particular proper way. They'll ask you why you want to quit, explain you need to send the equipment back and let you know of the cancellation fee. Unfortunately just by sending the equipment back doesn't cancel you out of the cancellation fee.

Can you just suspend your account... forever?

The proper way is to do so out of contract, so you don't get hit with a heavy fee. Your fee indicates you have 1.5 years left. You can suspend an account up to 9 months at a time. You can call in just before the end of the suspension, and re-up it, which would suit your needs.

Why are you trying to cancel, out of curiosity?

If I suspend the account, and then unsuspend it 9 months later, am I re-upping for another two years?

The retention reps I've spoken with of late are unable to provide me with a free upgrade to the new HD DVR (which I was promised). I've talked to three or four of them. One even told me he found the notes that I was to get it free, but that he wasn't going to honor the offer.

If you really have 1.5 years left on your contract, there is no way they would give you the new HR20 for free. They usually only offer the free deals to the people that already have the older HD DVR or those nearing the end of their commitment.

I know the CSR's gave you the run around but the one probably caught the others mistake and thats why you didnt get it for free.

I only glanced over the major TOS changes from some time ago, but if I recall right the "suspended months" DO NOT count towards your obligation commitments. And keep in mind that you'll still have a monthly fee of $5 or so. Not sure about how leased equipment works with suspensions.

Now you know why so many despise commitments, especially when dealing with a new service. You're better option is to find a way to grin & bear it until the cancellation fee is low enough that you don't care about paying it.

No, you are only re-upping the suspension

suspending the account does not, repeat, does NOT stop the clock ticking on the agreement, so...17 months to go equals....just less then two 9 month suspensions.

At the end of the contract, after you have unsuspended it, then ask for retention...then they may play nice with you.

I appreciate the information...

I'm slimming the account down to just my main service and one receiver (non-DVR). The CSR I spoke to said as long as I don't owe anything on my account, I can suspend up to nine months (confirming what has been said here). I wasn't bold enough to ask if suspended time counted counted when figuring commitment time, but it's worth a shot regardless. In a week or so I'll call and suspend the account.

Thanks again.

I guess that's one way to go too.

It probably wouldn't hurt to hunt through the provider's site FAQs and download a copy for proof if you find a definitive answer for certain. But this recently after the order should should still have a copy of the contract or one available somewhere even if you obtained the equipment directly from a retailer. The answer should be spelled out there even if it's in tiny print that you may have to re-size.

They don't provide that info in the customer agreement. If they did everyone who wanted to disconnect would get smart. But yes it's correct if your account has been suspended the commitment will still continue on the account.
