DVR, VOD use doubles; cable tops satellite
The amount of time television watchers are spending with video-on-demand and shows recorded by their DVRs has doubled in a year, from 2% to 4%, according to Leichtman Research Group. While growing quickly, the number remains so small that TV and advertising executives need not overreact -- for now -- to the threat they pose, LRG president and principal analyst Bruce Leichtman said. According to LRG's latest report, released Friday, the top cable companies boast 58.8 million combined subscribers to their basic service and 29 million digital cable subs. This compares with 28 million subs for DirecTV and EchoStar Communications combined. LRG said that, of those digital cable subs, 60% have used VOD, up from 25% two years ago. Households in the U.S. with DVRs jumped from 3% two years ago to 12% at the end of the second quarter. (Paul Bond)
