View Full Version : Just bought a HR10 from CompUSA. Is it a lease?
just purchase the last HR10-250 at CompUSA. Is this actually a lease? I did not sign anything that it was a lease. CompUSA don't have any of my account information at DirecTV. How can it be tied to a lease? How do they know what account, etc?
Is the $100 rebate somehow where the paper work is done to tie to a lease? Is the $100 rebate good for both leases and purchases?
Thanks for any help

Any D* receivers purchased now are going to be leased, unless you pay about twice as much as normal for them. If CompUSA didn't make you aware of the lease terms, that doesn't reflect well on them, but rest assured, unless you buy a previously owned unit from a private party, anything you get now is leased.
ANYTHING that you can get a rebate on will undoubtedly be leased as well.

The $100 rebate is a "lease rebate". So yeah initally it would be leased.

Since there was no paperwork to be signed, if you don't activate it or ask for the rebate, I guess you would own it!
I think Bob hit the nail on the head. I don't think it is a lease until the unit is activated or I send in the rebate. But the unit is really worthless if I don't activate.
When I do activate I must also be agreeing to the lease at that point. This is really bizzare. I can't think of anything else that works like this.
But it would not seem to not really matter where I purchased the unit from. Some have thought the HR10's that you can get from small online retailers who make no mention of a lease are units that you are purchasing. I am thinking this is not true and these units are also being leased.
There are some HR10s, with a higher price, they say specifically you are purchasing the unit. But I wonder if DirecTV would see them as purchases and not leases.
But where is the agreement? I will be activating the HR10 today, hopefully, it will be interesting if DirecTV has me agree to this being a lease.
Even with the rebate where is the language that this is a lease? If you went to court on this issue what would DirecTV use to show that it was a lease? I have been looking hard for the language and thus far there is not any anywhere.
Here is the link I used to purchae from CompUSA http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=srch1&Ntt=hr10%2D250&N=0&Dx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&D=hr10%2D250&Ntk=All&product_code=314765
No where does it mention this is a lease when I purchased. It does say that if you do the rebate it requires DirecTV activation, etc. In the store it does not make any mention of a lease, the worker said they had no idea what I was talking about and told me I was buying not leasing the HR10. The worker I talked to was a manager of some sort.
With software you are agreeing to the terms of the license when you open the package. But there was no similiar agreement in the HR10 box. Something like when you open this box you are agreeing to a lease.
The only reason I know anything about the lease is because I read Internet newsgroups a lot. No normal consumer would have any idea this is a lease. How can you do business in this manner?

When you activate the receiver they will at that time go over the agreements.. 2 yr advanced receiver agreement + leased fee agreement. I believe they will even give you a website if you want to read over them. If they don't it's directv.com/agreements. Also if you don't activate the receiver I believe.. because it's the same with dtv that compusa may charge a non activation fee.
