Thread title says it all!
I'm contemplating seeing if DIRECTV will take this thing back so that I can just stay with my HR10-250, which is currently boxed up and ready to be shipped back to DIRECTV.
HDMI issues, lip-synch issues, and recording issues....in just over 24hrs of ownership.
The only thing I really like about the HR20 is the speed of the program guide...and that's about it!
So, any of you gone back to your HR10-250 (TiVo)?
nah.. i was able to keep my HR10-250 and use them in parallel, but at this point (4 days of ownership), i can't say i'm ready to give up on the HR20... its fairly dependable. in my mind there are 3 things that the HR10 offers over the HR20 (at this point) and in my opinion they are things that are more than likely going to be addressed sooner rather than later... except maybe #1, i'm not sure these are capable of being as "smart" as a TiVo.
1. the logic to look for the same guide info in the past 28 days and know its a reairing of the same episode and thus not record it if "first run only" is desired.
2. the Keep Until I Delete logic on the HR20 is retarded and should function like the HR10 and all previous DVRs (minus the R15, which is also broken). If you say keep until i delete and you have keep a max of 2 set, it should record 2 episodes and then not record any further episodes until you personally delete one of the 2 available episodes.
3. pad the start/stop times of autorecords. this is clearly a bug and should be fixed IMO.
i mean sure, aside from these there are some bugs.... but i cant imagine things like those you mentioned going unresolved for very long.

I’ve had mine for two days now and I am still on the fence about what to do. On day one the HR20 crashed a few times for no rime or reason. This would not be so much of an issue if this only meant turning off and back on again. But since the unit has to start from “scratch” each time it crashes … well that is not good. On day two all has worked fine, but I am using component instead of HDMI this time, not sure if this has something to do with it not crashing now. The other reason for my indecision is the lack of dual tuner viewing, yes I know this has been talked about ad nauseam, but I did not realize how hooked on this “Tivo” feature I had become.
Other than these two issues and the fact that mpeg4 is the future I would like to keep the new unit but time will tell.

I have had mine about 30 hrs now and I don't really like it much. My H10-250 was so much better at EVERYTHING , especially the DVR part of it.simple and straight forward. This unit and its remote is so dang confusing. If I could get a CBS waiver I would send this baby back tomorrow.
Some of the TiVo features might never be on the HR20 if it's a feature TiVo has a patent on.

I'm the other way. If I had the extra money I'd get a second HR20 and move the old Tivo (standard def) to the bedroom or give it away to someone needing one.

I was going to do this but instead I kicked the HR20 up to the bedroom where it seldomly gets used and put the HR10 in the living room. I figure I may as well have the HR20 instead of returning it in case the software gets much better one of these days. Not being able to switch between tuners was a deal breaker for me among other things but maybe one day that'll get fixed. Plus if for some reason a bunch of killer HD channels get added next year I will already have the box to receive them and I can then decide if the trade-off's are worth it.

I've never actually received an HR20 so I may not qualify, but I did order one through beachaudio.com and the order got cancelled. I have to say that I was actually relieved when it happened because I started thinking about what I'd have to go through to set up my system to use the HR20 (new dish, new multiswitches, new cables). I also started thinking about getting stuck in another 2-year commitment and it really soured me on the deal (Verizon FIOS will be in my neighborhood shortly and I'm dying to try it out).
The HR20 sounds like a competent DVR and it looks like DTV did their homework in putting it together. However, there's nothing about it that tells me it's any better than my HDTivos. You'll hear lots of opinions from both camps so ultimately you'll have to decide which is your favorite DVR. If you can currently get your locals in HD via OTA antenna there's really no compelling reason to switch to mpeg4 at the moment. It will be at least a year or two before DTV can get their new sats online and add more mpeg4 programming. Frankly, the rush to mpeg4 hardware for some people has me completely baffled. If you can't get your OTA locals in HD then making the switch is a no-brainer. For the rest of us there is absolutely no reason to switch until more programming is made available in mpeg4.
FYI - DTV just released the latest 6.3 software (actually, it's up to 6.3a with some bux fixes included) and the menu speed is comparable to 6.2 on the SD DTivos. The slow menus and season pass setups were one of the only negatives to owning the HR10-250 but that shortcoming has been eliminated.

Hmm, I don't think we ever set up any recordings that way, because any time we selected to keep until I delete we also selected to keep them all. FWIW, I would expect it to do what it currently does (even though that does seem like a contradiction to "keep until I delete"), not what you expect it to do. I guess it's because I would expect to want the 2 latest episodes instead of the 2 oldest episodes. One way or another, you're going to miss some episodes when you set up a recording that way, if you don't keep up with the show and delete when you're done.

If that's what you want, then you don't set it keep until I delete.
We've had this debate multiple times over the R15. It's just flat out wrong behavior, and I can't believe it's not been fixed, yet (and that they did it wrong again in the HR20).
Yep, Walters is right.
It's not about keeping the last two or the oldest 2, it's about the unit doing what it states:
Keep=Until *I* Delete.
Keep at Most=2
Your way rmingee, it only fulfills one of it's promises.

Well having never been a huge TIVO fan, I'm gonna give this thing a try for a bit longer. Only had it 48 hours so far, but it has performed alright at my house. But then again I didn't swap an HR10 for it either. Kept my HR10, in fact still recording the same shows (just don't trust new hardware...). I won't give up the HR10 for another HR20 for some time though. But I don't think I want two HR20's either. :) At least not unless 6.3 actually comes down and they are networkable with my SD directivos...
TBH all I really want is my UTV with HD and more recording space. Those things were rock solid, fast, and so much easier to use. *sigh*

I purchased my HR20 from BB and used it for 5 painful days before I retuned it. 90% of my viewing was on the MPEG4 Locals. As it turned out, that's where most of this DVRs problem resided. I just couldn't believe that it failed so miserably in performing simple DVR functionality on MPEG4 streams. MPEG4 HD was the WHOLE purpose of this thing.
I've since put up a good rooftop antenna and am happily moving ahead with the HR10. I'll check back in on the HR20 next year after they have some more HD content (hopefully).

Well, my first HR20-700 lasted about one day. Now when I boot it up it freezes immediatly. I can change to one channel that works but if change channels again I get a dark gray screen. D* is sending me a replacement. But when I tried to get a Fed Ex tracking number I found out that for some reason the order had been canceled. Now I'm waiting again for the replacement. I'm willing to give this a chance just because when you set a program to record it was lightning fast compared to the HR10-250. At least it was the few hours that it worked. I'm going to keep the Tivo unit hooked for as long as it takes to make sure the new unit works properly.
I've never had an HR10 but did replace a standard SD DirecTivo unit with the HR20 and did so for the HD content. This past week this thing completely messed up the season premier of ER with lip-synch that was several seconds off. Then it caused the OSU/Penn State game to have broken and choppy video that made it unwatchable. The common denominator to both of these recordings was that they were the MPEG4 locals from Cleveland. I'm not sure whether it's the DVR or the lousy signal I'm getting on 119 although aren't the MPEG4 locals coming from 103?
I'm not sure what I can do since I've never owned an HR10 and bought the HR20 from BestBuy. Do you think I could return this to BB and get DirecTV to send me an HR10? Do they even have HR10's available? It's either that or hold out for some improvement via software updates.

OK, fair enough, didn't realize I was picking an old scab -- sorry :). Like I said, we never set up recordings that way, and probably never will, because it could lead to missing episodes, so I hadn't given it a lot of thought. The logic of what you say makes perfect sense.
