View Full Version : Software updates from where?
I am a long time Dtivo user who switched to vonage about a year ago when I moved to my new house. My Dtivos that are run to the vonage setup sometimes have issues downloading the software and other junk that they dial in for. What I was wondering is, are these new dvr boxes using the phone line to retrieve the updates or are they coming from the satellites?
I have ordered a hr20 and it will be installed 2 weeks from tomorrow. I am hoping to have as few issues as possible.

Updates come via sat.
Thanks for the quick response. I am one of the Dtivo subs that was always hoping they would activate the usb ports so I could network the units. I am currently carrying vonage just so I don't have to read the stupid "your device hasn't made a daily call in 45 days" message. I never use the house phone. I am hoping that they activate the ethernet port on the hr-20 at some point too.

Phone line is not needed for the HR20 at all other then what DirecTV "requires" for normal receivers (PPV and such). It's not needed for any DVR type functions like the Tivo. And you don't need a phone line for activation. Again, it's just like a regular receiver in that aspect.

Of course if you don't hook up a phone line you don't get the on-screen caller-ID notifications. :) Sounds silly but I've found they are actually really useful...

It'd be nice if mine worked. I've had the new receiver for three weeks. It's been reset countless times for many reasons and I've got the new software. I still get the message "please order caller ID" when a call come through. (I already have caller ID)....thoughts?
