WSBE Rhode Island PBS has been programming HD for more than a year - if the program comes to us in HD, it's transmitted in HD. Our signal is not always captured and broadcast that way, however.

As for broadcasting 24/7, we've been scheduling the full day on both of our channels (36.1 and 36.2) for more than 2 years. However, it is currently only available through a direct feed to Cox, Verizon, and ComCast cable subscribers. But we're working on it! Best information I have right now is 6-8 weeks before we can leave the transmitter on 24/7.

Great. Thanks for the information and welcome to DBSTalk.com!

I found a new channel last night, broadcasting from MSP, KTCI2, Channel 17-2, broadcasting in SD. It's a local PBS channel, a sub-channel with Channel 2 and 17. It's already in the guide data, and everything. Expansion is happening with D. Who knew?

Here's this month's local channel uplink change report, based on transponder map data (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=173192) from gct and doctor j and modeled after Sixto's national HD reports (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=172899).

Keep in mind, these changes were as of February 24th. There have likely been changes since that time. This data is intended to provide monthly highlights of some of the local channel changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

It appears that KRMA-DT2 (PBS/V-me) has been added for the Denver market.

There are some discrepancies between the locals lookup tool, online guide, and actual transponder map as to which PBS stations are available in that market.

The transponder map would suggest KRMA, KBDI, and KBDI-2 were all available before. And KRMA-DT2 was up in testing.

Can anyone in the Denver DMA confirm which of these channels you are receiving over satellite?

Also, if there's anyone in the Greensboro NC market, do you receive WCWG in HD? Online lookup tool had shown this one as added a while back, but now it shows no HD. Transponder map shows an uplink on D11, but it could just be MPEG4 SD.

Similarly, KOLN in Lincoln NE is showing up without HD now.

Yep, it shows HD all time. As a matter fact Gossip Girl is in HD as I type this reply.

I just got some interesting news. My brother in law had heard the Elmira NY DMA 176 would soon be available on SAT. He didn't know which provider, D* or Dish.

I emailed the General manager of a Station in Elmira NY and got this response:
"Yes, the equipment is in and ready to go. Its my understanding they have to get the satellite to work. Once that occurs we (Elmira/Corning market) will have local service on the dish."

So I replied and asked which provider D* or Dish? This was his answer:

"I believe its both. The company Hughes is the supplier for both companies. The local dealer can tell you for sure."

Does this make sense to anyone? So Hughes installs?

I've seen rumors about Elmira and a few other markets. It seems as though there is equipment set up in multiple markets that aren't available yet, and they just don't always make it a point to tell anyone when they are going to light them up. I'm guessing for competitive reasons.

A few quick things from this...

*We already spotted the addition of KRMA-DT2 in Denver and the change of WJCT in Jacksonville to HD.
*It appears WLUC-DT2 (FOX) in Marquette is now in HD and this is reflected as well by the local channel lookup tool.
*I have no idea what those three placeholders are for New York. Obviously, those three stations are already available in HD. And out of the three, only WNET would have any other subchannels with unique content. We may never know...
*There was some shuffling of the locals in Alaska between satellites. Not sure why this had to be done. Maybe one spot beam was better for a particular DMA than the other?
*It should be noted, the SD KETS that was removed was a duplicate uplink (KETS SD is also up at 119), and was apparently specifically for folks in the Shreveport DMA receiving it as a significantly-viewed channel. I'm not particularly sure why this duplicate existed. You could argue it was because the Little Rock SD channels are at 119, but so are Shreveport's SD channels.

Today, a local station based in Mankato, MN, KEYC, channel 12, CBS, was added to the Minneapolis locals. I presume only the customers in the Mankato area have access to this channel, but it's interesting that it's grouped with the Mpls. channels, even with the CBS duplication of programming. Anyone else pick up on this?

I have always had the Minneapolis local channels in my channel package, and the local Mankato station was never included, though I live in that coverage area.
NOW, the Mankato station has been added to my local station package, as if it also was located in Mpls. Interesting! There are now 2 CBS affiliates in this grouping, and I hope they don't remove Channel 4 from Mpls.

If you live in Nicolett County, KEYC should be available along with your Minneapolis locals, because DirecTV provides it as a "neighboring local channel". Otherwise, maybe they expanded the area where KEYC is made available.

Good morning,

I have a question for everyone or for the people who can answer it. I am a DTV FSM and in our DMA (Topeka, KS) we do not have HD Locals, but DISH network does. I have sent off a few emails from time to time to my higher ups and have not gotten a straight answer on why we do not have them. I do not know if this is because Dish does the part time HD programming and our locals are only broadcast in HD part time or if a contractual agreement was met.

The reason I am asking about it is because we lose customers on a daily to weekly basis because of the fact we do not offer HD Locals in the Topeka, KS DMA. Any information you can supply would be grateful, as this is one of our keys to success in our DMA.

Of note...
*El Paso now has a second HD PBS. KRWG is actually out of Roswell, NM and covers the NM portion of the El Paso market.
*For some reason, the Juneau market is now receiving FOX HD from KFXF (out of Fairbanks) instead of KTBY (out of Anchorage). It might have something to do with the satellite moves shown during the last uplink, since this would now make all of the Juneau locals originate from D11.
*KEYC is actually a Mankato MN station, but it has been made available to portions of the Twin Cities market as a significantly viewed channel.

They didn't expand the area where KEYC is available very far; I can't get it in the southern suburbs (Burnsville) of the Twin Cities. However, I've always been able to get KAWE (PBS) in Bemidji, Minnesota — much further away than Mankato!

You might try sending Newshawk a PM; I'm not sure he reads this thread any more.

In a recent PM to me, he admitted "I haven't been maintaining the HD/ED newscast listing as I once did." I wish he would again, because those charts are chock full of info and spiffy to look at. They make my Local Over-the-air HDTV News Stations (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14618838#post14618838) table look weak by comparison. (It is more up-to-date, though. ;))

From my perch in Minnesota, it seems that there's no HD news yet in the Youngstown DMA, but in the nearby Cleveland-Akron DMA, WJW (Fox) has HD news, and so do the ABC, CBS, NBC and MyTV affiliates.

Wow !!!... That's 16 local markets getting their UNI affiliate in HD, some which don't have a CW or MyNetwork TV affiliate in HD yet !....

How quickly (based on DTV historical data) would these local stations become "available" after being uplinked as "unavailable" ?... Is it unreasonable to expect them to go "live" this Wednesday ?...

Here in South Florida, WLTV-HD would be our 7th local HD from DirecTV.... (we have 13 out of 18 locals OTA in HD, the other 5 are still in 480i)....

Here are the new changes from the latest transponder map update. As always, thanks to doctor j and gct.

Can someone in the NYC area tell me if they are seeing anything on 39. The new data would indicate there is both a channel 39 and 40. The online lookup tool would suggest that the Azteca America affiliate on 39 has moved to 40 and 39 is no longer there. Verification of either would be appreciated.

In other news, the test slots for the recently-added Denver Univision affiliate and the long-ago added Kansas City MyNetwork affiliate have disappeared. And good news for folks in the Midland-Odessa area. Your NBC affiliate may finally be coming!

On channel 39 all I get is an on-screen message saying "For AZA programming tune to Ch. 40." On 40, I get programming from AZA I presume.

Does anyone know why DTV changed (on Friday) the local channels identifiers in the Channel Guide ?.... The locals in HD used to be identified with the station call letters (ie. WTVJ) and the non-HD locals were listed using the city and channel number (ie. MI33).... Now I'm getting all the locals (HD and non-HD) listed with call letters but with nothing to distinguish the HD from the non-HD .... You just have to know that the first call letter listed is the HD version...

It looks rather odd as you scroll the guide up and down and it's easy to press the non-HD version in the midst of so many repeated call letters with no HD icon inserted.... Shouldn't they treat the locals the same way they treat the national networks (ie. 202 CNN-HD, 202 CNN) ?.... Any thoughts on why the change now ?

Is there a particular reason why you don't hide the SD duplicates?

Is there a particular reason why you don't hide the SD duplicates?

The SD duplicates are my back-ups to the HD's when I lose the HD's during the rainy season here, which is half the year.... For some reason, the HD's always go out and the SD's do not (as often) .... Signal strength not an issue (95-98)....They're on different satellites so I guess the SD transponders are stronger (in this latitude) than the HD ones in handling the tropical dense clouds....

I also like to see which networks/stations are using SD center-cut vs. letterbox and the SD's allow me to see this....

I'll give your advice some thought, though.... thanks !

Nonetheless, even if one were to hide the SD duplicates you still would not know which locals are being carried in HD.... Since they're all now identified the same way (without any HD distinguishing icon) only those of us who follow DTV closely know exactly which ones.....

All they have to do is add "HD" next to the call letters (like they do with the national networks) to avoid the guessing game of which are HD and which are SD.... Simple, no ?

That's a very good reason.

I always used the Quick Tune feature for SD channels in the event that I lost the HD versions (the same thing happens here with rain fade - the HDs seem to go before the SDs). Obviously that limits you to 9 options, but as a quick solution for the channels I watch the most, it worked nicely. And if you get your locals OTA as well, you can point to those with Quick Tune instead of the SD locals as a backup.

I always keep native on so the original resolution will pass through to my TV. Then I keep my TV set so that each source will remain in original format. As a result, if something is in SD, there are always black bars on either side. It's true that HD channels show SD programming with black bars as well, but it almost always appears clearer to me than the SD versions of each channel (though I'm not quite as discerning as some of the folks on here when it comes to picture quality).

I've never tried Quick Tune.... I'll test it tomorrow.... and with the DTV OTA tuner as well (to keep the HD's alive during storms) .... Great tip, thanks !

I don't hide SD duplicates. I use a custom favorites list and I use that to hide most of the SD duplicates. However, there are some that I don't hide. I don't hide the stretch-o-vision channels like TBS and TNT. This is because when those channels are showing non HD content and then stretch them, I can't watch that show. I'll flip to the SD channel and watch the show in 4:3 instead of stretched to 16:9. I hate stretch-o-vision.

Nice list !.... With these seven I now count 14 new UNI-HD locals (!!!) added in the last week....Plus 1 TeleFutura local HD (NYC)...

Looking at doctor j's original transponder uplink report there's still 1 other UNI-HD local missing (from going live)---- WGBO- Chicago...

However, doctor j's report had not included 1 affiliate listed above--- KTVW-Phoenix, so there may be other local UNI-HD's still being tested before being turned on...

Following up on DTV's Press Release about these UNI/TF additions (in late April) shouldn't we be on the look-out for a whole bunch of local TF-HD's also being added soon ? (since only NYC is live).....Perhaps doctor j may help shed some light on this....

Here is the latest from the new transponder map update. Muchos gracias a doctor j y gct.

Probably the most interesting thing is the new test channel for WQED in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is one of only three markets in the top 30 DMAs without PBS HD on DirecTV (and PBS HD isn't even available in one of those three - Denver). We cannot be sure that it's the HD feed and not a subchannel, but hopefully for the Pittsburgh folks it's WQED HD.

Also, Milwaukee WI is one of the larger markets without PBS HD on DirecTV. There is now a test up for a subchannel of WMVT (which is not available in HD). WMVT-2 is VMe, but from past experiences -2 on DirecTV could mean any of the subchannels. PBS World and PBS Create are carried on other subchannels and would also be possible additions in this slot. The good news is this subchannel will be from the SD-only WMVT. That should leave WMVS as fair game for an HD addition later on.

We were already aware of the Univision and TeleFutura launches and the launch of NBC in Midland/Odessa. WFDC (from DC) has also been added as a significantly-viewed channel to some part of the Harrisburg PA market. Other DC stations were already available in the affected areas.

Reviewing Newshawk's "HD Local Channels" listings, I see subchannels (-2) listed in black (ie. 12-2, 58-2, etc.) which means they're being carried by DTV in HD.... My understanding was that sub-channels could not broadcast a higher quality than 480i, thus no HD--- the main channel (-1) was the only one able to do 720p or 1080i.... If my assumption is correct, then how can DTV carry the local subs in HD ?....(a direct-to-DTV fiber HD connection, not OTA, perhaps ?)

I do know WABC-7 (NYC) has been fiddling with two 720p feeds on 7.1 and 7.2 but they have been heavily criticized for the PQ impact it's had on the main 7.1 ABC Network feed.....I wasn't aware of any other stations/ markets piggybacking multiple HD fees onto the -1 and -2 sub-channels....Is this what's happening with the stations listed by Newshawk ?.... Thanks !

New HD locals additions today:

WGBO Chicago (Univision)

Also, the follow "short markets" are now receiving channels from neighboring DMAs to fill the big 4 networks:

Dothan:
NBC 12 (Since Montgomery is coming soon, I'm guessing this is supposed to be WSFA - although it's not yet offered to Montgomery folks. Can anyone in SE Alabama confirm?)

Harrisonburg VA:
WUSA Washington DC (CBS)
WRC Washington DC (NBC)

Did anyone see anything else new in their guide today?

One more "short market" addition:

KOCO (ABC) from Oklahoma City has been added to the Sherman/Ada market. That market actually has its own ABC affiliate, which is a subchannel of the NBC affiliate KTEN. However, DirecTV is apparently in a contract dispute with that owner, because they haven't carried it since they launched HD locals for that market. Obviously, DirecTV can't import an out-of-market NBC since they aren't carrying KTEN. I guess because the ABC affiliate is on a subchannel, it does not have must-carry status, and therefore, DirecTV is allowed to import a neighboring market channel.

Amusingly, DirecTV has placed KOCO, which is broadcast OTA on channel 5, on channel 10 - the spot where KTEN would exist. I'm not sure if this is just to hold KTEN's spot until an agreement is made or if it is to spite them.

Here are the locals changes from the latest transponder map update. As always, thanks to doctor j and gct for providing all of this fantastic data.

For this update, I included the test locals on nets 10 and 15 since we're getting no obvious signs that those channels will be matched with the appropriate DMA net yet.

Many of these things we were already aware of. The most interesting thing from this update is probably the three test channels for the Chicago market. I've heard quite a few requests for WCIU HD, plus a second PBS and WPWR is one of only two Top 15 DMA MyNetworkTV affiliates available in HD that DirecTV doesn't offer in HD right now.

I'm a little unsure of what the test channel for KHOG is all about, since it is supposed to be a simulcast of KHBS.

I just left any references to D10 in there since we don't really know where things are right now.

Lots of things happening with local channels this update.

*Three new markets became available (or at least they did via satellite, it seems there is some sort of glitch in the system preventing them from actually adding them for people right now)

*Three new local HD channels for Chicago and CW HD for Detroit!

*Several new PBS HDs and one PBS subchannel are now testing in the guide data. Some (KYIN, KCVN, WEAO) are in markets where at least one PBS HD is already available, but Milwaukee WI (as hinted at in this thread about a month ago) and New Orleans LA would be adding their first.

*In North Carolina and the surrounding markets that have UNC-TV via DirecTV, the -2 channel has switched from UNC-KD to UNC-EX.

*The previous CW affiliate in Lafayette LA has now become a This TV affiliate. The channel was moved from 119 to 101, and while it still appears to be available, is no longer showing up on the DirecTV website as available. They replaced it with the new CW affiliate, which is a subchannel of KATC.

*Two markets' HD channels moved from SW2 to D10(12, I guess?) and one market that was split between the two had the remaining SW2 channels moved to D10/12. Not sure yet what to make of these moves, but I assume it's all part of the jockeying to make more space for the additional markets coming online in the near future.

Thanks as always to doctorj and gct for collecting and providing this data...

Thank you again for the summary.

Yes, we are having difficulty sorting D10 and D12 LIL's.
As there are 3 sats at 101 (designated Sat 101) providing channels (only 2 for spots) the precedent may be to just group as (KA-Low 103) and not separate D10 or D12.

There are folks working on this but no markers yet.

I looked this morning and one set of DNS channels added in NET 11 (9 total now).
That must be sioux city, 8 announced last week.
Only new info was
1) channel # change 15 to 6 for WDSU New Orleans NBC sent to Biloxi DMA.
2) WYIN2 PBS Ch 56 moved from test to active in Chicago DMA.
3)*WBXX CW ch 20 in Knoxville DMA started as (*) test- pending.
4) Colorado Springs, Memphis, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, & San Francisco DMA's SD guide channel designation changed from 2 letter alpha channel# designator to 4 letter call sign listing.

edit 5) Apparently WUNU pbs ch 31 dropped from Florence-Mrytle Beach, SC DMA.

doctor j really covered all of the updates already, but just to keep my format up-to-date...

Though they removed WUNU from the Florence/Myrtle Beach market, they are already receiving UNC-TV HD/SD from a different market (Raleigh, I'm assuming). I'm a little confused about why they were receiving both in the first place. As best I understand it, all of the UNC-TV stations are a simulcast.

My pleasure. Honestly, it is a waste of bandwidth. WYIN has an HD channel. I wonder why a subchannel goes up.

I would guess one of two things...

1. DirecTV only had space for an SD channel on the spotbeam.
2. WYIN chose to have the unique SD subchannel carried over the HD simulcast. In most cases with PBS affiliates, they are given an option by DirecTV between the HD feed or one of the subchannels. One of the few exceptions is PBS in North Carolina, where both the HD feed and one of the subchannels is carried is most of the HD markets. It's also worth noting that two PBS HDs are already offered to the Chicago market. I could see this having an impact on the decision-making.

It seems like KTEN is always stubborn when it comes to providers carrying their station. I wish a deal would get done soon.

It looked like a deal would get done back in April if what the KTEN GM stated was true. I knew better though because KTEN likes to play hardball.

Hey Bamaweather. I'm going to direct this question towards you, since you seem to be the most informed to answer this question. Anyone else, please jump in if you got the answer. When my LIL market launches (Salisbury, MD) later this year, there are 2 issues.
1. No NBC affiliate. Should I assume I will get a NBC from Baltimore or Wash DC
2. Fox is a sub channel and is only standard def OTA, due to being on the local CBS stream. Do you think I will get a neighboring channel for HD, or have to keep my NY dns?

1. There's a very good chance you'll get NBC HD from a neighboring market. The few markets that were missing big 4 affiliates had neighboring channels or distant locals added within the past month. I see no reason why Salisbury would be treated differently.
2. It's most likely they will offer the 480i feed of WBOC-DT2 as your Fox affiliate. I'm afraid they have no other options. I don't recall off hand whether WTTG or WBFF are significantly viewed across the Salisbury market. But even if they were, WBOC probably wouldn't be very happy about it and then you might not have CBS HD.

Of course, these are just my best guesses based on what I've seen.

Thanks for the input. From what I've read, since I've had a Fox waiver since 4/09, I can keep it, so I won't be out of HD for Fox, just have to pay an extra $2.50/month for the NY feed.

Here are the latest transponder map updates from doctor j's 6/30 capture...

Most of these additions have been mentioned here already. A couple of notables...

*Not only did New Orleans get CW HD on Wednesday, it was also added as the default CW for the newly-launched Biloxi market. Good for those people!

*KAZT would be the second HD independent station from the Phoenix market. I don't think any other markets have two HD "Ind"s on DirecTV.

*KWBU from Waco TX is in the process of being shut down. DirecTV already offers another PBS HD in that market (KNCT), so that programming won't be completely lost. The channel is allegedly supposed to be off of DirecTV as of yesterday (based on their website).

*KLWB in Lafayette LA was already replaced a few weeks ago when it ditched CW programming. This was more or less removing a placeholder for it.

*Allegedly KWSU is removed from the Spokane WA market? The local channel lookup tool still shows it as available but it is gone from the transponder map. Two other PBS locals were already offered for that market, including KSPS in HD.

New additions from 2010-06-30 compared to 2010-06-23:
[38] WNOL HD (CW-Biloxi MS via New Orleans LA) @ D10 TP 22
[27] WUNI HD (Univision-Boston MA) @ D11 TP 17

Notes:
* Asterisks typically denote channels that are currently unavailable.
In some rare cases, stations without an asterisk are also unavailable.
* Listed cities indicate the DMA city, not necessarily the city of license
for that particular station
* Stations in each category are sorted by DMA then channel number.
