View Full Version : OTA guide data (for searches returning Digital Service as program name)

In the past when I've searched for certain shows (Curious George, Nova, and other PBS shows) my OTA PBS channel would pop up in the search but the show title would have the dreaded "Digital Service" as the name. No info was there to explain how this happened but it was the correct time and subchannel for the OTA show. I've seen other posts with people having the same results (though I've searched about 20 times trying to find some of them).
Previously I tried renaming the subchannel to the call letters of the station without the "-S" at the end but with no luck. Well last night I was playing around and deleted the PBS channel and then added it back in and changed the call letters as you add the channel (which renames all the subchannels to that name) and when I exited the menu there was my guide data for PBS as subchannel 2 that had never been there before.
Just thought I'd mention it in case it works for someone else as well. This was a channel E* carries in the locals package and was on my 622.

I'm not sure exactly what you are saying that you did. You changed the subchannels call letters or the designation of the subchannels to their broadcast frequency instead of the 5-1 label?

I will have to look at my menus to see the steps and will try to put them down tonight. It is renaming the call letters for the entire set of subchannels (all at the same time)
Rather that documenting the steps you took, you could also try to rename it now to something else - you might find that the name you enter has nothing at all to do with it now working. Just the act of deleting and re-enter with CURRENT PSIP info is all that it took.

I tried that route 3 or 4 times yesterday as well with no success. Even did a reboot afterwards and it still wasn't there.
I deleted and added back
Deleted and then rebooted and added back
Deltted added back then rebotted
Then repeated all of those and modifying the subchannel call letters only.
None of that worked then I did the following which gave me success
Menu
Setup
Local channels
add locals
Put in appropriate transmit number
edit name
placed only the four digit call sign (ex wkdf)
done
When I went back in the guide this time it worked.

It didn't do anything here. It is still the same.

Ditto. I tried that for the missing PBS on both my 211 and 622 and the guide remains missing. :(
Glad it worked for you. Bob.

I tried this last night with poor results.
After deleting my 3 PBS entries (36.x), I went to add it back manually, but after setting it to 36, it would not see the signal, I had to do a scan to get them back.
Worse, I had the 622 lock up several times in different places (like in the menus after deleting the PBS entries, also at the beginning of a scan) and had to reset the 622.
Would be nice to get this programming info though, for sure.

You would need to go to http://antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx and enter your zip code to find out what channel is used for the digital broadcasts you see as 36.1, 36.2, ... For me, the PBS channels 6.1 and 6.2 are broadcast on channel 53. If I delete them, then select Add local, then 53, it will (takes time) show the signal strength for that digital station. If I edit the name at that point to be KABC (or anything I choose), it only changes what displays on the screen for the channel(s) and doesn't have any effect on the Guide info itself. Same if I edit the display name for one of the subchannels later - the name I enter is display only and doesn't change the guide contents.
It would be extremely rare for digital subchannels on 36-1, 36-2, ... to actually use channel 36. 36 is usually where the current analog channel resides and you need to find the channel used by the digital version of the station.

Hopefully this will work for someone else. Not looking promising though.
