Hello all...I've found the topics very useful...I have a question that I didn't see answered anywhere.
I've noticed a common problem on this forum seems to be hard drive noise (chirping, etc). I don't believe I have that problem.
I'm a first time satellite owner, just transferred from time warner digital cable...coincides with us moving into our first home. I'm used to the dvr and some minor hard drive noises.
A few days ago we had guests sleep over in the living room where the HR20 is located. They had difficulty sleeping because even though the system is turned off there is a "humming" sound. My guess would be that the fan is constantly running. I called directv support and they had no record of that problem. I have not connected our phone service yet so do not have dvr setup. They said they could not diagnose if it is a hard drive problem since the hard drive isn't recording anything. I should have phone setup this evening.
Last night I'm watching tv with my husband, and you could hear the "humming" sound through the tv audio. You can still hear it when we turn it "off" (standy mode).
To me, it seems odd that a fan would constantly be running. Unless I'm confusing the fan for hard drive noise. Has anyone had this problem? Should I try to get a replacement?
Thanks in advance!

That noise is not normal...you have a defective HR20...since you have not had
it for 90 days, call DTV and have them replace it ... just tell them it is loud and noisy and you know that is not normal for these new receivers...if they fail to listen and do not send new one, call their retention at 1-800-824-9081 and they will take care of this for you...

Thanks for the quick response.
So you are saying the fan (humming) running constantly is a defect? I just hope I'm not misdiagnosing it...confusing the sound.

If it doesn't sound like a Computer Fan... but more like an electrical humm..
Yah... then something is wrong.
If it is so noisy that you can hear it over the TV Audio (at a normal level), and you are not sitting right next to it... then yes, that is to loud as well and something may be wrong.
Hard drive noise would sound a lot more like an inconsistant pattern of clicks and brrrrsss when it is trying to write bigger pieces of data...

Thanks Earl for the response.
It kinda sounds like my old (4 years old) 80 GB fantom drive...very loud fan noise. I do not think it is the hard drive (no chirping or clicking). And the fact that it is constant doesn't seem right. Quiet room, on standby I can hear it over 10 ft. A/C on less. With audio on still.
Is the fan supposed to be going on constantly?
Thanks

The fan does run "a lot" to maintain the temperature of the unit around 127
Check your System Information... how hot are you running?

I see. I will check on that as soon as I get home. I'm assuming it is under the 'setup' menu.
I don't know why it would run 'hot'. It's on a table, not enclosed and I'm not recording anything yet.
