View Full Version : Clumsy interface....

I wish D* had stayed with the TIVO name. The season pass and the entire interface seemed to me to be more user friendly and the D* version is clumsy, and akward.

I miss the R10... But, the HD is worth it... I just hate change....

I think that is part of it...

What do you find clumsy about it?

I mean... when you are in the guide... find your program. Hit R to record just that episode, hit R a 2nd time to set it up as a Series Link...

But what do you find clumsy about it, or are you just still very used to using the TiVo interface, that you have to "think" instead of "react" to set it up.

When I first started with the R15... it took me a good month to get used to the interface to the same degree that I am with the TiVo.

Now that I use the new interface as my primary DVRs... I have found using the TiVo interface to be a little more cumbersome then I remember it to be.... why... because I am now used to using the other one, and I have to "think" how to use the TiVo interface, instead of just pretty much automatically hitting the buttons.

I read somewhere in a post here that there was a way to sort the recorded programs by time, date, name etc??? but i tried the 1 and 2 buttons like the Tivo and they do not work.

The other "Clumsy thing" is the adjusting of Series link options (aka, season passes), I cannot find the area where all the series are managed from like the Tivos set seaon pass options... i cannot remember what it was exactly.

i did figure out the the "-" will delete a program!!! that was driving me nuts.

I agree with "The Earl of DVR's"

The HR20 O.S. is more powerful than the TIVO O.S. I used Tivo for 4 years.

I must admit that a good remote (Harmony 880 for me) will help alleviate the few small "issues' that the HR20 suffers from.

e.g.

The main guide can be pulled up (no filter) simplified to one button press (guide-guide originally).
A button can be created to take you directly to the "scheduler" screen (list - yellow)
Add bookmark can become one button (pause - green - pause)
One touch record Rocks! You can change defaults if you need to - see my other post on that.

Pretty much everything else is either exactly the same or better! Go back to TIVO after using the HR20 and you will miss the HR20 O.S.

Hit List and then I think the Yellow button and you should be able to get to the Prioritizer (which is the Tivo Season Pass Manager) this will show you everything you have an SL for. As Earl stated I have now gotten used to this interface and when I hooked up my Tivo a month ago once again I was having problems finding things in it for a while.

I think Tivo is too cutesy/cartoony and I think the R15/HR20 are a little too utilitarian for my taste. I would like to see a little more of a hybrid of both of them. :)

just hit list then yellow - that will take you to the scheduler screen. There you will choose prioritizer. Enter prioritizer and you can change all the options you desire - just select the program you want to change

your other question - to sort pull up the list then hit quick menu - that has your sorting options. Quick menu is very handy!

We happen to really like the interface, and feel its a major improvement on the "dumbed down" Tivo interface. As far as being "intuitive", we'd choose the work simplified instead.

Yes, Tivo was simpler, but once you used it for a week or so, but then you would start to look for more and more sophistication - that's why a cottage industry of hacks blossomed. Once you can do recording and scheduling, you move on.

The H20 interface is logical, straight -forward, and includes tons of options and features that don't require one to work for NASA. My wife has no problems using it with 5 minutes of "training", including scheduling, recording, viewing, and the buttom tricks while viewing.

And unlike the 14 firmware upgrades it took to get the H10-250 stable and fuctioning properly, this box is doing quite well after just 2 firmware updates. My guess is that after 2 more updates, it'll be 99% solid for 99% of the users. That's quite something for having the latest technology, more storage, and more connectivity options.

...I wonder how many have read the manual....

Oh yeah...I programmed my GUI-based universal remote in 3 minutes for all the new controls.

I have to confess that I felt the same way when I first started using the HR20...but now (for the most part) I love the interface. Now when I go back and try to set up a season pass on my Tivo DVRs I get annoyed because of the number of button-presses you have to use to do it, and the fact that the guide resets to the current time/channel after you set up a season pass recording.

One thing I miss from the Tivo is the smoothness of the "trick play" features. On the Tivo when you pause, resume, jump back, etc. the response is instantaneous and there's no jumping around of the picture. The FF/REW feature is also less jumpy (like the Tivo is playing more frames). With the HR20 there is a bit of a delay, especially with "jump back", before the picture resumes, and the FF/REW seems to skip a lot of frames and makes it harder to figure out where you are. This might be an artifact of the MPEG4 encoding (which is pretty much all we watch) having fewer I-frames.

Some truth here - but let's keep in mind how much data these little boxes are crunching! :eek2:

Besides the other ways I just hit "Menu" and then from the mini-menu choose the first option for settings. Scheduler is one of the options.

I personally find the interface a breath of fresh air frankly. It's very easy to get around, powerful, and very fast. One touch recording is beyond nice.

True for now! ? :grin:Although Earl's statement (http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=667708&postcount=28) that it's a known issue on both the HR20 AND R15 doesn't exactly make me think it's going to be fixed any time soon. How long has the R15 been out now, and it's still an issue?

But many of the questions here and on a number of other threads are simple ones with answers located in the manual.

I agree the bells & whistles tricks and shortcut features aren't in the book.

That's amazing isn't it! I can understand how people that think the O.S. sucks (those that don't know the tricks) because it pretty much does without those little "easter eggs"

Directv - please add a play from begining option for recorded programs. (YES I know you can skip back all the way)

We are a lazy society that refuses to even read instruction manuals (even for sophisticated equipment like the HR20).

Posted earlier in another thread From Earl --

Hold Jump Back (top left from Play) for 3 seconds to go to start
Hold 30s Slip (top right from Play) for 3 seconds to go to end

You're welcome.

I prefer to think of myself as effecient! :) Yes - I know these tricks, but still there SHOULD BE an option when you play a program to start from beginning - right there above the option that says resume playing! Is that so hard to implement?

My old E* receiver had this option. It also had the option to auto-tune to a selected future program on a different channel, not just to record it, which was nice.
