Eric at D* told me we could buy this machine for $749.....But couldn't tell me who sells it..............Is it possible?

Haven't seen it anywhere for that price. And even so, why would you pay that? So you have a leased unit, big deal. D** takes care of it and your "lease" fee is what you would pay for an additional receiver.

When I called and spoke to both a regular CSR and Retention about a week or so ago they both told be that I could convert the lease to a buy by simply paying the difference between the $299 I paid and a number very similar to the $749 you were quoted.

I'm going to stay with the lease since I'll probably want the latest and greatest in a couple of years anyway.

1) It would be through DirecTV if you wanted to own it
2) What is the benefit of spending an extra $500 - $800 for the unit? The HR20 is 100% useless without DirecTV service.

3) Plus if you plan to sell it on Ebay or something if you cancel your service, you won't get anywhere close to what you're going to shell out to own it.

4) If it is a lease, if your HR20 breaks D* will send you a replacement at no charge.

If you really really insist on owning it, contact Robert at ValueElectronics.com. He'll be able to set you up. I really don't see this as that big of a fuss to consider leaving D* over, especially since you've been a customer since 1994 as you said.

from what I understand.. it is up to the retailor to decide if lease or owned.. so.. ask your retailers & then stick to your guns when they tell u it is leased & have them switch u to acdt (access card distubution team) are the only ones that can determine yes or no.. then decide to activate the rest of the way..

I guess, you will just have to lease the boxes with another service.

maybe, but i own my 3 hr20s -- paid total of 224. it's not a lease. customer for about as long as you.

i wouldn't rush to get these POS units. hr10 is way better unless you have no other way of getting HD locals. (i'll make the switch since my nbc reception is so bad.)

Seriously Duffer, what benefit besides some nebulous peace of mind will you get by owning it? Is there anything you can point to other than "I want to own it, I always have..."?

A man goes to Home Depot looking for a 1/4 inch drill bit. Does he really want a 1/4 inch bit, or does he want a 1/4 inch hole? How about you Duffer? Do you really want to own it or do you simply want the benefits of ownership?

Also, as others have pointed out, if you need to own your equipment, that will leave you with an off air antenna. Every other provider uses the leasing model as far as I know.

I call Shenanigans! Look at your bill online, I bet it shows them as leased if you got 3 for $225. Either way, it doesn't really mattter. I own all three of the DtIvo's in my closet as well as the HR10 that's on it's way to the closet. Sometimes I think I should keep my old junk that I'm never going to use again in DTV's closet instead of my own. :D

I have owned all of my units thus far and what has it gotten me? A stack of old units. I just got an HR20 for what amounts to $40.00, when you consider the $200.00 they credited me and the free HBO and High def. for 6 months. If it breaks I get another. Whattaboggin! :D

I got mine for $14.95 and prefer it to be a lease. Even VE suggests that you lease so that if there are any problems past the 90 day warranty period they will exchange it for you.

Got no problem with a lease. If the hard drive dies in 6 months they'll replace it at no cost, no questions asked. When the new "best receiver since sliced bread" comes out in 2 years I can exchange it for that unit.

Monthly cost is the same lease or buy. Makes so sense to toss $500 down the drain. But whatever you want to do. Either that or go lease from someone else. They are about all leasing at this point.

It seems logical to me that D* is doing this so that they can compete with the cable companies. Who would want to shell out 800 bucks, or 300 for that matter for the ability to watch HDTV, when they can rent a box from the cable company for 5 or 10 bucks a month? I'm guessing that is where they are coming from and I think its a great idea. I too have a closet full of old receivers I should have sold. They are useless to me.

So why do you say E-BAY SUCKS ?
I've bought and sold many things via EBAY and I never had any problems.

The buyer pays for the item thru EBAY, once the item is paid for EBAY informs the seller it's been paid for, the money transfers to the sellers account, the seller ships the item to the buyer. Any problems that come up are dealt with thru EBAY.

I paid $1000 for my hr10... I like to own my own equipment....... Ha ve since 1994
That's the only way you could get the hr10 at the time.

when i called to activate they read the spiel abotu them being leased; i had them look through the notes, and they said yes, the csr told you that you would OWN them. so they updated my account. now, it is possible that they have gone back on their word, but i very specifically had the conversation with 3 separate people and they all assured me that i own (not lease) the units.

then again, on tuesday, they brought me three more units because they didn't see that i had already received them. i decided to be nice and told them not to deliver them. but that would have paid for service for about six months if i resold them!

i own both of my hr10-250s; when one of them appeared to die, they sent me a replacement free of charge (it turns out that the unit didn't die, and i kept the original due to the recorded content). this is probably because i pay 4 or 6 per month for the assurnace package.

Correct, if you pay for the "protection plan" then yes, your receivers (owned or lease) are covered as in your case.

Cool, I would check your bill online right away just to be sure. If they messed it up or just gave lip service, you can hold them to the fire now while the promise is still fresh.

and gosh and golly, that ends up costing 2x as much per month as leasing.

I own my HR10, and got substantial credits from D* when I bought it.

But for the life of me, considering the credits they're handing out, I can't understand why anyone would object to the new leasing terms.

Being a new customer... I had to pay 300 dollars for a leased machine... kind of doesn't sit well with me... and I really dont understand it...

You have to think about this in the long term. You'll save more $$$ with the lease plan, especially if one of your receivers goes bad. If the HR20 was compatible with services other than D* I would agree with wanting to own it.

If you owned your HR20, decided to leave D* down the road and tried to sell it, you probably wouldn't get anywhere near the lease price for it.

My brother in law is going to purchase his HR20 for one reason he is only going to use it during the NFL season so that he can get his games in HD and then deactive it after the season but then turn it back on when the next season starts up. His wife my sister perfers the Tivo interface and they will be keeping their old SD sat-t60 reciever as their main box.

If not for this factor he said that he has not problem leasing the box but say he pays the $299 to lease it now and then at the end of the season he deactivates it he will then have to send it back and then when the new season starts he has to pay $299 to lease it again. This said now in 2 seasons he has paid $598.00 and at the end of 3 seasons he has paid $897.00 so in it view he comes out cheaper owning then leasing.

As for me I am just going to stick with leasing for I have no plans to ever deactiving my box.

Xaa
09-28-06, 03:15 PM
It would only cost him $40 bucks more to keep it activated for the entire off season. At a $799 buy vs $299 lease, it would take him more than 12 years to break even on the buy.

Additionally, his family, after using something else, may decide they like this too. They may not, but it seems too soon to know for sure.

I dont debate the leasing program... I actually dont want to own the machine because I dont want old hardware laying around... what I am mad about is the 300 dollar fee to join the club... they offer you this great package for 4 months... but charge you 300 dollars... so in the huge scheme of things... I am not getting a deal at all... Especially when I read about everyone else around her getting free HR20s... and free programing... it kinda makes me think I got the raw deal in the long run... and leave a bad taste in my mouth..

Just my 2 cents...

I will agree with that. The fee to be able to rent it is offensive at least even if it is still financially palatable. I would prefer a model where they gave less programming but offered the hardware for free. If they did that though, they would have fewer people get hooked on Total Choice Premium. :D
