View Full Version : Black and White on TV2 using 622 via coax (UK TV)

Hi guys,
I'm a newbie here, so just wanted to see if this is more an issue with the 622 or an issue with my TV.
I just moved to the US from the UK and bought my TV with me. TV1 works great hooked up via HDMI on the 622 - loving HD all the way!
I wanted to hook up TV2 via Coax to another UK LCD I have - this is PAL but also accepted NTSC signals (I verified this by hooking it up to TV1 downstairs - works fine)
Our 'COAX' inputs for the anntennas are a little different. They don't accept the screw in type input, so I bought a converter from Radio shack (RG59-PAL UK RF Connector) . Anyway, I hooked it up via the Coax cable from TV2, and managed to tune in the picture, but it came out Black and White, and with no sound.
I messed about with the settings on the TV and the 622 and couldn't manage to fix it. As stated, this LCD is a dual system TV (happily accepts NTSC, PAL etc) but I just couldn't get it working on the modulated output on TV2.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks,
The Brit! (Shakini)

It sounds like the TV isn't seeing the modulated signal as NTSC.
The way NTSC works is basically as a B/W carrier plus color subcarriers and audio subcarriers. Your TV is finding the B/W carrier but not the subcarriers. Check your settings on the TV and make sure you are using the proper settings for US NTSC reception.

Hi shakini. Welcome to the States!
Are you saying that the TV1 on the coax output is fine on that TV but TV2 on the same coax is black and white?

Welcone to the forum. The PAL TV has a totally different standard than NTSC. Too complicated to get into here. It will only play back B/W if used here. The LCD by using the HDMI input is bypassing any of the world standards so that is why it works. It will be less expensive to buy a replacement TV than to adapt the TV you have to NTSC. Only other possiblity is if you happen to have a multistandard VCR that you can input from the TV 2 from the VIP 622. It may work as the convertor for the TV 2 and then if you get a tape from over the pond it would be able to play that.
Shakini,
If James' suggestion does not work try a different RF channel on your 622 receiver and your TV.
By the way, I was stationed at RAF MilldenHall back in the mid 60s (back when de Gaul kicked the U.S. out of France and we moved our operations to England). I really enjoyed the U.K. and its people.

RAF Alconbury 1975-1979 (now closed). Although I was a brat not an enlistee.
It's fun to look these places up on Google Earth and remember.

Hey guys!
Thanks for the replys. I think you are correct, this will never work due to the fact that it is indeed a PAL TV. I got a little excited when I found a setting in the tuner area where you can change the format for each channel to either PAL, SECAM or NTSC but that didn't do anything either.
kmcnamara:
You are correct, I tried the modulated output on TV1 and same thing - Black and White.
James:
Thanks for the update - it seems like I'm only getting the B/W carrier as you stated.

I think the VCR route may work, but unfortunately I don't have a multistandard VCR. Also I decided to leave my PAL VCR at the apartment as a gift for the new tenants - I'm sure they will be delighted to get a 'cutting edge' bit of technology!
So now I need to maybe think of another way to get TV2 on my PAL LCD upstairs. Would this work - take the composite & LR channels off the TV2 output on the 622, and use those 'video over CAT5' adapters to send the signals upstairs, then use another 'CAT5 - Video' converter to get the signals back and hook that up to the LCD. Would that work do you think?
THanks guys - thanks for the great replies, and the warm welcome! So far the US has been very welcoming, whether its in person or via the forums!

Here is a newsletter I receive that has a mini review on the type of transmitters you are looking to use.

Hi guys!
Thanks for all teh suggestions. now I have a second idea. I have a second reciever (211) hooked up in the basement - this was going to be hooked up via HDMI to a projector which I've been waiting for in my shipment from the UK and I tried to power it up and it didn't work! looks like something got damaged en route!
So now I've spoken to the Insurance co and they say it will take 8-12 weeks to process the claim. So I have a spare 211 sitting here for 3 or so months. How about If I hooked up the 211 upstairs in my bedroom instead? Would that work? Granted, I can't watch my DVR items on my 622 or schedule any recordings like I would have been able to with my original idea of using my LCD on TV2 via the 622, but the advantage is that I can at least watch HD upstairs now. The only issue is that they wire coming out of my wall is only the 'RF Coaxail' cable for the TV input, NOT the white Coax that will go into the reciever to decode the satellite output. Is it easy enough to change this cable over? I know this is probably beyond this thread now, but would I have to get the Dish guys in again to change the wire routing or can this be done quite simply via a DIY job? Sorry for posting this, I did I search and couldn't find anything that matched.....
Thanks guys, this forum is SUPER helpful!
