What's the liklihood of finding someone willing to trade a brand new hr20 for a new (or nearly new) hr10-250. I am moving to HD, and the CSR said they stopped supplying installers with hr10-250s in August. I am hoping I can talk to the installer and get him to give me one, but in the event he's all out of them, I'm looking for other options. Any ideas?

Are you trading the new HR20 or the nearly new HR10-250? One problem is that IIRC all HR20s are leased, not owned. Someone that has an HR20 might well be willing to make this trade, but can't. I myself bought an HR20 and returned it because of the reliability issues I encountered, to replace it with a brand new HR10-250. I got lucky that BB had a new returned HR10 when I brought back the 20. Otherwise, the supply of HR10's has been pretty well relegated to Weakknees and eBay.

As for the relative values of the machines, short term the HR10 is my choice but long term the HR20 is the place to be. Interactivity, MPEG4 and catching up on all the features the HR10 has with a few software updates. Once they get the bugs out.

I've read a lot about "leased" machines, but the bottom line as far as I am concerned, is that if they say the box is worth $299 and that's what I owe them (less any deal I make with them), then they can *say* it's a lease, but it's not. I've purchased it.

As far as the HR10-250, as long as the box is in good shape; works; never been hacked (unless it's got a mongo 750gb drive, of course), I'd rather have an HR10 for a couple of years rather than an HR20.

Just hold on to what you have until Directv launches the new satellites in March of 2007. They will have it all under control in late May. Then HD takes a turn for our benefit. Its just 7 short months away.

I can understand how you might feel that way, but that doesn't make you right. I don't think DTV says the HR20 is worth $299, they just let you take it home for that amount. Kinda like leasing a car for $299/month that you paid $2000 in acquisition fees for. The dealer didn't sell you the car for $2K and DTV didn't sell you the box for 300. The fact that they are not selling the box at all does make evaluating the actual value more difficult, especially when the Leased Receiver monthly rate is the same as the Owned Receiver rate. But if 5 year old 35hr SD Tivos are selling on eBay for $100, it shouldn't be hard to prove that 300 isn't fair market value for the HR20.

Don't want to argue about it. You're point of view might be completely right. I simply want an HR10-250. If anyone wants an HR20, pm or email me.

I have an HR10-250 available if you want one that randomly reboots itself.

Your HR20 cannot be reassigned to someone else except by D* after you return it to them. You do not own it, so you cannot give it to someone else. As bad as the $299 lease fee might sound to you, how does a $470 non-return charge sound? That's what D* will nail you for no longer having the HR20 and not returning it to them - the rightful owners.

Sounds pretty outrageous to me. The whole leasing thing smells, and smells even more when you consider that they are intentionally deceptive about it...

Whatever. The people I see here that always claim that D* hides the lease terms until you're stuck then spring it on you seem to be the people that are spending hundreds of dollars on equipment and aren't reading the fine print. I especially don't buy that argument from people that frequent this board because it's really hard to visit here and not be aware of it.
