Dish will finally be getting local weather soon. You will be able to get local weather on channel 214 during local on the 8's.They will put a special symbol up and you will click the select button and get local conditions, temperature, wind, humity etc, forcast and local radar for your area. You will also be able to go to channel 100 to see the weather channel weather.Dish is doing away with the accuweather and adding the weather channel. It will be listed as weather channel under the news loco. You can also change zipcods. This is suppose to be implemeted sometime this coming week hopefully tomorrow. They have to send an updated hit to receivers.

This is wonderful news indeed!! :)

My parents have always asked me if they can get locals on the 8's with Dish and soon they will be able too. :)

My parents will also love this. That is the only thing they miss from cable. I am not going to tell them until this is live. If this is going to be like the RSN in HD that were to go live “very very soon” about 2 months ago, it might be months before we see this.

Two of my local channels that I recieve OTA have a sub-channel with radar and a repeating forecast - it was a really nice addition to the HD experience. If you have this I think they beat the snot out of the weather channel, accuweather or any of the rest of them since it's available all the time, not just on the 8s.

If I understand this correctly, whatever E* provides will be available continuously as well, not just on the 8s, no matter what it's called.

Get an old laptop and put it by the couch - complete weather 24 hours a day at any time, as well as any other information you want.

Dish will finally be getting local weather soon. What is the meaning of this word "soon" ?
Like Judge-ruling-on-distants soon ?
Like Agreement-with-Setanta-Sports soon ?
Like Blade Runner SE being released soon ?
Like Windows Vista soon ?
Or like Analog-OTA-Ceasing soon ?

Whats a "zipcods"???????

Accuweather was the only "interactive" feature that worked on the 921 (well that plus the lousy games that never worked right using the remote).

This is good news. The weather on the 8's has been one thing I missed when I changed to satellite TV over five years ago. Is it coming on today?

I'm getting TWC on 214 but it's not local and don't see a special symbol to click and get the locals?

I have a 625.

Everyone needs to relax - it hasn't been released yet! IT, just like INHD and the RSN's - is a rumor - that will EVENTUALLY be released.

yes it is a rumor, but one that came from a VERY reliable source. My contacts say that there was to be a software release to some recievers to get this feature, and the software would be sent to the recievers today. I will not give out the source, but it IS a reliable source, and the fact that it has info on the dishnetwork site, that this WILL happen. and most likely sooner than HDrsn's.

Yep. E* would not have put it on their website if it were not very close.
(IIRC: It was originally on their site without the "coming soon" markings.)

Don't panic. Wait for it - and then you can complain about how it could be better. :)

Actually I can complain about it right now :D - Weather Channel is the worst for my area - the predictions are never even as accurate as the reviled Accuweather. The most accurate forecast is by www.wunderground.com, which even includes the "discussion" about the area weather by the meteorologists. But I have a laptop next to the couch, so I don't need TV for weather, news or sports anyway.

I would like to see Dish post weather warnings on any channel you are watching, when a warning/watch is issued (for your area). This could either be a scroll, or a banner, or an icon that just alerts you to it! I think this would be huge in terms of attracting people from Cable.

James Long

I agree ... cross channel warnings would be good.
I also agree with those who would want the ability to turn them off (for dubbing/etc).

The ONLY way I would like the warnings being on every channel is if I could turn them off. That's what my weather radio is for, and it's why I don't want anything to do with Cable.

Wow - it's starting to sound more and more like your "source" is that "other" satellite website. :D

I also agree that they would be good but only if we could turn them off if we don't want them.

Our local cable company started doing it last spring and, since they don't allow you to turn them off, they can be a real distraction. What the cable company does is scroll (at the top of the screen in red) that there is a weather warning and to tune to cable channel 12. The problem is that the warnings stay up a very long time (sometimes all evening).

No it's not a rumour. It's being released but maybe not as soon as they originally thought.Go to the link above and you can see this isn't a rumour. Why would dish put a rumour on their own page that says coming soon. It's also listed on the interactive channel. It could have gotten delayed again maybe back to November but it will be out.It was suppose to have been released last week but they had problems.I still think this will be out by the end of October or early November maybe sooner.

i am watching the weather channel, and when the local on the 8's came on they
said " the local on the 8's is brought to you by your local cable or sat. company"
the dishnetwork logo came on in the center of the screen, don't know if this means anything or not, but i have never seen it before.

James Long
10-03-06, 10:35 PM
That's easy enough to do at the headend (which is what cable companies do).

I don't watch TWC enough to say that it has never been there before. I seem to remember a text version in the past. It doesn't suprise me that it is there ... the forecast bar at the bottom of the screen seems new to me as well although it could be on the feed to E*.

TWC is the most localized national channels out there ... for many years they have offered computer systems and weather stations for cable systems to install in their headends to give accurate local conditions. They also do local inserts for their advertisers ... often (on cable) you'll see a local dealer listed at the end of an advertisement.

As the channel matured the graphics and inserts have improved and the weather data has moved from primarily local meters to a national data feed. It seems like every year they improve the look of their network.

Hopefully this new interactive weather feature is a fast loading application. The CNN and Bloomberg applications have enough of a pause that I generally don't use them (they have other issues, such as incomplete story text on CNN and a clunky UI on Bloomberg). When that banner appears on TWC that says "press select for local weather" people need to see local weather fast!

I haven't ever seen the dish logo there either.Maybe their testing it out.Just out of curiosity what part of the day or night does dish ususally send out updates to receivers?I'm curious because I'm wondering what part of the day this update to the weather channel is most likely to occur when they get ready to release it.

James Long

They can turn on the new channel at any time. If there is a firmware issue new software for your receiver doesn't instantly turn on the new channel.

BTW: I saw the logo ... the one I saw said that "The Weather Channel was brought to you by your local cable or satellite company" (not locals on the 8s specifically). They then mentioned "and this local radio station and newspaper" with a logo free screen. After that there was a separate opening graphic for locals on the 8s and the national city forecasts we know. The next time I saw the locals on the 8s there was no sponsor slate.

If they are only showing the copyright/sponsorship screen once or twice an hour it would be easy to miss.
