View Full Version : OTA Freezing 622
I recently hooked up an OTA antenna to my 622 and its frozen three times within the last hour, I get a black screen and then the unit doesn't respond. I have to unplug it to get it back.
I believe it may have been after anytime I made a change to the scanned channels. It doesn't happen right away after the change but shortly after while watching an OTA channel. I've left it alone for a while and so far so good.
Anybody else have this problem? Will it continue to reoccur?

I believe there was a mention to this may occur with 3.65. Check the bug report thread.
On a side note.. Why do you need to scan frequently. I only scan once and I am good to go. Have not scanned since 3.60.

This is a known issue with E*. It is something they are working on. It isn't expected to get fixed until a later release. You must live in a DMA similar to mine, one where there are constant problems with the TV stations PSIP data get corrupted. Until the fix, if the receiver doesn't reset on it's own, it is necessary to do a power button reset. It would be nice, when they make the fix, if they could make the receiver so it will work when the channel mapping for OTA is incorrect.
Thanks guys, much appreciated. It hasn't happened since, so hopefully I'm good to go.
I kept scanning after repositioning my antenna in an attempt to get all the OTA channels I care about. There were alot of garbage channels that just broadcast title screens and audio (one had more than a half dozen broadcasts in one channel 29-(1-x))... worked through them all and I'm just going to settle with what I got and the position the antenna is now.
The position its at now is the best compromise but I only get signal strength in the 60s... I'm maybe a dozen + miles from NYC so I should be doing better than that. Though the 622's OTA tuner is much better tuner than the D* HR10 I had previously (2-3 channels if I was lucky), is there an antenna you guys would recommend to help it along?
Thanks again.

Well couple of things I would suggest rob.
1) Go to AVS Forum and check our your local area HD thread. Lots of useful information and usually you can find what people are using and what seems to work.
2) Go to antennaweb.org and see what it recommends.
3) Do a survey of what others are using in your area. If you find one what is new, you might want to ask your neighbor what their experiences are and if they know what antenna they have.
At a dozen miles I would expect better than 60s. if you are in the lows 60s, from my experience you are borderline and could have random picture breakup problems.
Having said that.. I use a Channel Master 4228 if I recall with a preamp and I am very happy with it.

Great Stuff... I've already fwd: the location info home from antennaweb.org to mess arround with the positioning a little more. Right now I'm only using the Terk HDTVi Indoor VHF/UHF HDTV Antenna, since its internal it probably explains the low sig.
Also since I now have an extra RG-6 cable hanging from the roof (w/ D* I had four coming down, E* is only using 3) I can maybe get creative with a roof antenna. Does E* have a way to pipe in an antenna sig into a switch like D* does?
I'll mess around a bit and let you guys know how it goes... thanks a lot!

Well you are getting beyond my scope. Software guy not a hardware guy. ;) But you can place your OTA signal on the same cable as Dish line ofcourse with some caveats. I am sure the guys with more knowledge in this area will pipe up.

Is the Terk ant. a powered unit? The OTA signal can be input into the RG-6 that is after the switch that combines the sat dishes. What it takes is a duplexer on each end. 1 to input the OTA ant and 1 to split the signal between the sat tuners and the OTA input on the 622.

Another thing you might want to try is to get some cable and take the terk outside and see if you can improve the signal. That at least will give you some idea of what you are loosing in terms of inside to outside.
