View Full Version : No captions on NY Mpeg-4 Ch 5 & 7?
In NY, there were no closed captions when I played back the recordings of Sunday's, "Desperate Housewives" and Monday's, "Prison Break" from the mpeg-4 hd channels.
I noticed that CSI Miami did have captions from last nights in mpeg-4 hd channel 2.
I hope they fix this soon for channel Fox 5 & ABC 7.
Has this been the pattern for Fox 5 and ABC 7 mpeg-4 with the H20 or HR20? Is it just a recording problem?
Did anyone have captions from their OTA source? (non HR20 obviously)?
Did anyone have captions on the D* transmitted mpeg-2 HD NY versions on Channels 88 and 86 for those shows with the HR20 or another reciever?

Do you get out of synch captions on FOX-HD often?

I not only get out of sync captions on FOX-HD as well as other local HD channels (in the Washington, DC area) but completely garbled captions too. In short, here in the Washington, DC area - the captions are unusable for the most part. They are either garbled, out of sync, or else sometimes every other sentence spoken appears to be missing from the captions. If I didn't know what was being said - just reading the captions I would have no clue based on how garbled they area. My wife depends on them, so for her the HD channels are unusable - so sort of defeats the purpose of having a DVR with HD capability. Calls to DirecTV have not resulted in any help - they blame it on everything else but themselves and seem to not be interested in trying to resolve this problem.

Same problem in the Tampa area. ABC and NBC channels are almost always void of CC text and if it is there it is an unreadable mess. CBS works 50% of the time and Fox is always hit or miss. D* blames whoever they get the signal from. My cable has no problems with any of the national networks whether it is SD or HD programming. It is definitely D*'s problem of bandwidth and MPEG4 encoding. I am not happy about it and will pursue them to take back the HR20 and discontinue my service, I'll stick with Brighthouse cable.
Yeah, Fox HD captions always lag way behind the dialogue. It's rediculous. That's recording OTA with the HR10-250.
I just tried the 2 recordings I spoke of earlier on the HR10 and the captions were there OTA so it's got to be DirecTV.
My wife also depends on them and we had to exit out of the 2 shows from the HR20.
Either DirecTV should enable the OTA tuner on the HR20-700 so we could get the captions (albeit delayed with FOX) or turn them on their transmitted feeds.
They should do both.

The Fox captions problem is a national one, and I've made them aware.
