I have a dish network receiver with built in DVR. I can record 2 shows at the same time. I'm trying to figure out away to see if I can record a third show using DVD recorder record at the same time.
Is this possible?
If yes, then how? Or will I need an additional receiver to do this?
Please let me know.
Thanks

To my knowledge the 622 is the only DVR that can record threee shows at once.. The number of shows recorded has to do with how many tuners a receiver has. The 622 has two Sat Tuners and One OTA Tuner.

There is a third tuner for OTA in the ViP622, if you can get stations Over-The-Air where you're located. You could then, using the OTA tuner and your attached antenna, be watching and recording to DVD an OTA show while you're recording two satellite shows. Don't have enough OTA signal where we are, so haven't done this myself.

Just recorded 2 shows the other night and watched a third live with no problem on the 622. Just make sure one of the recordings points to the over-the-air feed.

How do you do that? Do I have to connect an antenna to the 622?
When I record now, I have 2 options, either TV1 or TV2.
Also, dose this mean that with the OTA I will get just the local channels, not all channel I have from the receiver?
Let me know
Thanks

Yes, you can only do this if you have an antenna connected. This allows you to record (or watch) one program off of the OTA tuner in addition to one off of each of the the two satellite tuners, for a total of three.

Thanks. Any recommendation for a cheap antenna?
Also, all the recordings will be done by the DVR, right?
Thanks again.

As far as the antenna recommendation goes, it depends on how far you are from the towers and some other factors like line of sight and reflections. I'm 2.5 miles from my local station towers and I'm able to receive all my locals just fine with a $10 indoor Radio Shack antenna. The Zenith Silver Sensor seems to be a pretty popular indoor antenna for folks who are farther away than that, but not so far as to require an outdoor antenna.
The best place to start is probably antennaweb (http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx). This will let you know what stations you can pick up from your location and what sort of antenna you will need to do so. You could also check out avsforum's HDTV reception hardware section (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=25) for a lot of information about antennas and assorted accessories.
EDIT: I just noticed that you're in San Francisco. Apparently there is some difficulty with OTA reception there. You might want to take a look at this thread (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=61037) to see what sorts of issues people have been having.

Well, if I were in a large metropolitan area, I'd probably start with a wire coat hanger and see what I could see with that. If it works, can't get much cheaper. If it doesn't, then it's off to Wally World for a $10 set-top. If that didn't work, then I'd go visit my friendly local Radio Shack dealer, Fry's, or what have you.
If I were "out in the boonies" I'd be looking at Winegard, Terk, or other well-known brands that promise good fringe area reception.
Before I'd do any of this, I'd be sure to Read The Fine Manual that came with my 622 to see if it had any specifications or recommendations for OTA antenna connections.

one more thing, so I will connect the antenna to the OTA turner at the back of the DVR. How will I see the channels then? Do I need to connect that to the TV somehow? Also, where I can select the OTA channel to be recorded using the DVR?
sorry, I'm just confused.

No trouble, it is a little confusing. The OTA channels are available on output 1 of the 622. They will show up in the 622's program guide and you can select them from TV 1 just like any other channel. If you subscribe to your area's Dish Locals package, you should also receive the program guide data for the OTA locals. You can then set up OTA recordings on the DVR just like any other channel. If you don't have the program guide data, then you will have to set up manual timers for the OTAs to record at a specific time.
You can not watch live tv from the OTA channels on TV 2 in dual mode, but you can watch recordings taken from the OTA tuner on both tvs.
Hope that clears it up a bit.

If I have questions, I know where to ask (-:

OTA program listing ONLY appears if you subscribe to local channels, and then only primary DTV channels, no (rarely) subchannels.
San Francisco is one of the rare DMAs - all 5 OTA subchannels of KQED appear in the Guide. Sacramento now has EPG for both PBS subchannels in the Guide, and I saw 3 NY PBS additions for WNET1, WNET2, WNET3 in this week's Uplink Activity. Still rare, but some progress toward medium rare.

ok. I have hooked a RadioShack antenna to the DVR. Now where are the OTA channels?
I have all the local channels without this antenna. Like channel 2 show as channel 2 and channel 8225 (I think).
If I hook up the antenna to my VCR, I get the OTA channels fine.
So again, how can I record a 3 shows at the same time using the DVR?
Thanks
PS: I just found that I have 522 DVR not 622. But still it has 2 sat turners and one OTA turner.
The 522 allows the analog to pass through to the tv. It doesn't record the digital OTA, you will not be able to record OTA with a 522.
