He said he is putting in the AT9 dish and I ask if they included the switch and he seemed to think the old switch would work since it was 4x8. I said I don't think that will pass MPEG4 and he said what's MPEG4. So he said he can swap out my old switch with a Ka/Ku band compatible switch will that really do any good? What should I be asking this guy to make sure this goes right.

I've read here only the Zinwell will pick up the MPEG-4 signals to get you locals. Good luck!

Be sure they install a Zinwell WB68. It's the only multiswitch that will correctly swith/pass the new Ka-band satellite signals.

A zinwell 6802 will "work" till next year.... Then it is going to fail when the new sats are up.

Yes they should include it. I was told twice by the CSR that it will be included in my install (this Saturday) but of course it's not on the order ticket. The installer will not be leaving my house without giving me the WB68 or having it dropped off to me so that I can install it.

I've got an installer here as well and the Zinwell WB68 is what he installed, I made sure of it! New HR20, H20 and D11 along with a re-locate of my HR10-250. We'll see how it all plays!!

A question about the WB68...
When my installer swapped my 3lnb for the 5lnb last month, he changed the multiswitch to the WB68. The old switch was powered through a cable to a wall plug adapter. The installer said the new switch was self powered and didn't need the be plugged in. When I just checked the switch to see if I had the right zinwell that you speak of, I noticed that he had the wall outlet cable going into the switch.
Should this have an ac adapter or should it be self powered by the sat and box?

4 cables from the dish and no AC adaptor on the WB68.

Thanks - Could this have caused any damage that he had one of the out cables going into an ac adapter?

Ask him to show it to you and prove it's a Zinwel WB68 just to be sure. Sometimes they'll say whatever they need to say to get to the next install as fast as they can.

Mich micro tech is the IC right?... good grief.. and good luck.. if you dont see 94% or above on 101 .. Raise Hell! and call the world before he leaves.
That "hurry up offence" and quota (as the below poster mentioned) will have those scared wanna be puppies telling you and doing anything to get out of there.
Is he in that "pretty white van" or a POV (private operated vehicle)?
That one description of the vehicle he arrived in UsuaLLY WILL make night and day on the install you get.
MAKE him show you ALL 3 sig(101, 110,119) on the D-11 BEFORE HE LEAVES.

In another thread you told me I didn't need the Zinwell because I only had four lines going in. Since I am getting HD locals, I'm assuming that my old multiswitch is passing MPEG4. So, what's the deal? Do I need one or not????
Update: I just called the D* Home Services department and asked if my current multiswitch would become obsolete when the new sats were launched next year. She said yes. Then I asked why the installers didn't install it. Her answer implied that they "just do what's necessary to make the system work." So I followed that with asking her to conform that my system would no longer work once the sats were launched. She said that I was correct. At that point she got really huffy with me and abruptly asked when I would be available for a multiswitch swap. After we scheduled the appointment for this coming Saturday, she hung up on me. I guess when it comes to D*, you have to be prepared to endure the rudeness in order to get what what you should have gotten in the first place.

The tech. videos on channel 578 say - You must install the B band converters.
No ifs ands or buts.
It also says - Program the DIRECTV remote to control all of the customers products, show them the DVR functions, show them how to order PPV, have them sign and date the quickstart guide. I'm sure most of that doesn't happen. Most installers hook the unit(s) up, make sure you get a picture and sound on the TV and yell - See ya !! as they run out the door.

I'm new to the board, just had my dish installed on Monday. All seems to be fine, but can you tell me where I will find the zinwell multi-switch so I can check if it was installed? All I see from the dish is what looks like a splitter.

Make sure they install the new multiswitch and the b-band converters for you to save the trouble later. My installer said both were not needed- and that my old multiswitch would work, which they do.....but like Earl said, they WILL be needed, so make them do it.
One of my installers fell off the ladder of my deck, and fell on my 4228 antenna I had on a pole in the ground under my dish. He bent it up pretty bad, and sliced his hand all up. I told the other guy to finish the dish, and I would do the rest myself- as in switching the zinwell.
Figured if they have trouble staying on a ladder, I would rather not have them do anything else :)

I need more than eight lines, can a second Zinwell be added with splitters going to the sat? Has anyone tried this? Thanks.
Yes! I had two installed which gave me 12 outputs. Just hope that your installer brings two with him and knows how to do it. Took me three installs to get it right but they finally did.

I hate to sound ignorant here but I just recently had the AT 9 dish installed as well as the HR 20 and was told I currently don't need the multi switch as I only have a total of two DVR's (only two TV's one HD one SD) no addtional receivers, two cables to each DVR. Is this the case? Most importantly when the new satellites go up next year I assume then unless I add another receiver or DVR I will still not need a multiswitch. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I really don't know.

You don't need a multiswitch. With the AT9, 4 cables are pulled down from the dish. So, all you need is two cables for each DVR.

The AT9 by itself has 4 outputs, enough to run 2 DVRs. You should be fine, unless you add more receivers.

Here's one for you: what do I tell the installers at my house tomorrow if they try to install the AT-9 IN ADDITION TO my old dual-LNB and multiswitch, and thus avoid having to install the new Zinwell multiswitch? I'm afraid they'll argue that since I have only one high-def receiver (so far) and the other four are standard def, they don't need to install the new multiswitch.

At least your installer showed up. Today is SECOND time the installer has NO showed and not even called. This is actully the third attempt. The second attempt they sent some idiot who told me I couldn't get locals HD and didn't know what the HR20 was. This is all from the same local install company. can I ask direct tv to try to find another install company since obviously this company has issues???

I printed off the AT9 user guide and manual from www.solidsignal.com and had them laying on the kitchen table when the installer came in.
In case there was a question, I could show him (without asking to see HIS manual) that the WB68 is needed.
There was no problem, however; he knew about the switch and had plenty of them.

My experience is that you do not have a choice of installers. You get whichever company handles your particular area. Don't know if that's true for every area but I suspect so. I wish you better luck. :(

I'd think twice about this type of set-up if I were you. From what I've read I don't know if "daisy-chaining" these multiswitches will work in the future. Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
As I posted in the other thread I called today to confirm that I will be getting the Zinwell and it is on my order sheet. before the installer starts anything for me i will be asking to see that sheet and confirm he has it with him.
Thanks to eveyone in this thread for providing enough info to scare me into calling to confirm this.

Well I figured his tip was my bent antenna and not making him replace it :) To tell you the truth, I really handled the situation well. I guess since I just had a newborn added to my life I have become soft :) My old self would have had no compassion and would definetly called his supervisor to get reimbursement for the antenna that he fell on.
Luckily he did not get speared by the ground pole I have sticking 6 inches out of the ground next to the antenna pole- now that wouldve left a mark!!!
