View Full Version : Picture quality from 622 vs 211

Hello,

I found this forum a long time ago but this is my first time posting. I just purchased and activated a new ViP622 after having a very nice experience with Dish's 211, and have a video recording quality question. My understanding is that this DVR is designed to record and play back video in the same quality as it is being received, and that there is no extra compression going on to "squeeze" programming onto the hard drive...is this a correct statement? Is there any loss in video quality with the 622 vs. the non-dvr 211 that I was previously using?

The reason I ask is that I am so used to using a PC with a capture card as my DVR for SD programming (I use it to record from a 4DTV and Canadian dish), and it has different bit rate recording levels. The quality varies...5.6gb per hour is the highest setting (or 12mbps), and it goes down from there. I know that DVD recorders are based on the same idea. I de-activated the 211 so I can't do a side by side comparison, but would I expect there to be any visible difference between the two or none at all?

Thanks for your help!

Chris

No loss of video quality - the digital satellite stream is recorded on disk prior to decoding, so it is exactly the same as if you were watching it live with your 211.

if you just got your 622 and you have a HD TV. Make sure that your 622 is outputting 720p or 1080i to your TV so that your HD channels give you the best quality possible.

Thanks for confirming this for me...I'd been doing a bit of reading here and hadn't found any definitive answers about this until now. This is great to know.

...and thanks Ron for the welcome! I feel honored :) Yes, I am definitely hooked up to a 53" Hitachi RPTV, in 1080i. The HD from this little box is amazing, recorded or live. I've been really impressed during the short time that I've had the 622 so far.
