View Full Version : So does the Slimline Dish really exist?

Does anyone know anything about this other than DTV had a pic of it in their presentation the beginning of the year?
I'm asking as my current 3LNB is mounted where it was designed to be mounted. On the south side of my house, with a 2x6 back plate installed under the stucko and my four RG6 lines running from there to the distribution box.
The last couple of DTV installers that have been out have stated they cannot mount the AT9 in the same place. It must be mounted on a pole or on a flat surface, requiring 4 cables be run back to the original mounting point on the outside of the house. Oh, and BTW both of these guys were meaning to ground my 3LNB dish, but left without grounding it. So who do you trust?
Now, if the Slimline is just vapor/hardware like much of DTVs DVR software is, please let me know the Slimline will never go into production. I'll then work on another plan.
Ive seen a physical one in an employee broadcast;it does exist and will be coming out to an installer near you

Your a mess. (Wink).. I swear i feel like im typing to a "mirror" sometimes.. No kidding. Too funny.
Btw your ground OR Lack of i mean. Well If you call ironwood and tell them > " Hey i had a state electrical inspector by the house(for some other reason) and they specifically told me my dish *AND cable was Not grounded according to NEC that i had significant risk concerning ect ect. " I bet you'll get a return visit. Lol.
Goes to show ya that that farce of HSP QC doesnt reach too far HUH? The grounding IS the MOST Imp. part of Any install. So same ole story "wolf" same ole HSP story. Untrained and scared to death "kids" who cut corners to achieve speed and pay. Its sad brother sad. Another thing IF the job was QC-ed (most Hsp's have a 10% or greater mandate of QC btw) the tech that left that system ungrounded would rec recoarse. If its a contractor of that HSP,, that recoarse comes in the form of that 100$ Chargeback i speak of here.
Ya should have been on the phone today with a Bruister (HSP in my area) Victum (cust) AGAIN today.= 2 techs on the job (At-9) and when the question was asked by the cust how long the LEAD TECH had done the job.. the answer WAS 4 months. ALSO here's something for ya. Due to the turnover rates in new hiree's and quitting the HSP here (in certain offices) is Not giving the SBCA (certification) classes anymore because they are loosing money because they pay for the cert and the the techs quit. So now your training is pretty much in the van riding with some other NON trained idiot that has been on the job for 4 months. So the tenure is getting shorter and Now the approved "non grounders" are NOT even certified to do this to start with period. What a crooked farce of a racket.. its pittiful!
hEY with your backbone and such why dont you call DTV and tell them that "discovery" has enlightened you to the risk of fire ect due to their "approved Home service provider" shortcomings and that you are considering a suit concerning. See what ya get and when ironwood shows back up to put that green #10 piece of wire in.. LOL..
What gets me is this HSP rape from techs of 5$ per rec for not running ph lines (which they get paid for from DTV but yet KEEP All the Money) and yet ALLOT of states require Low voltage licences and such to run phone line because of "life line" considerations. ASK your HSP kids if they have such or for that matter even know what it is.. LOL.. True and pure lawlessness and in a wide spread way. Told you guys here its a racket.. AND cust satisfaction, codes, is NOT a consideration nothing but Keeping the MONEY coming.. thats it. I bet you theres tons of peole in this forum that have no clue if their install is Up to NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE as mandated by every state and municiplality in this country.
Wolf id do something about the grounding issue No kidding. Thats the EQ you paid for in your house and it doesnt meet code as per your description as a legal install period.

My life story!

That's what was really funny. When the last guy was out, to replace the 3-lnb assembley, I mentioned the ground and he hemmed and hawed and said, well sure but all I've got is green. I said no problem, I'll paint it. He said no problem I'll put that on when I'm done with this. Ends up not so much. When I went to check the work, no ground. Lazy SOB!.
Time for another call to that stellar DTV repair line. Gotta love those guys! :eek2:

The slimline exists, but does it perform equally in comparison to the AT-9?
Directv is running a training video for the second generation AT9 backing plate. From the pictures referenced above this is the Slimline mounting plate they eliminated the dither adjustment on the mount. I would guess before the end of the year we should see the slimline dish. Ch 578 I think was in the clear with the HR20 and KaKu backing plate alternating.

From the pictures I have seen, the Slimline is more similar in size to the AT9 than it is to the Phase III dish. The biggest cosmetic difference is the fact that all the LNBs are contained in one housing. It still must have the width to cover 20 degrees of the sky.

I would agree with that. Just had an installer out her two weeks ago to install the AT-9 on my roof (he did a great job, btw). I asked him about the slimline. He said that "they" had a few back at the warehouse to train with, but that he thought they were not much smaller than the AT-9, so he wasn't sure what the big deal was about.
After reading this thread, I checked the install he did for a ground....whew, it's grounded!

The lates tupdate I had is that it is in production, and it will start to be installed when AT9 stocks diminish.

So we have to wait for the AT9 to be out stock before you can get one? And how long is that going to take?

What happens if everyone sits around waiting for the slimline? :)
My impression is that the slimline wouldn't need the extra supports that the AT9 does. Is that correct?
I currently have a GainMaster dish which uses a 2" mast. Is or will it be compatible with the slimline dish? The hope would be to just have the installer drop the new dish on the existing mast.
Thanks.
My impression is that the slimline wouldn't need the extra supports that the AT9 does. Is that correct?I would guess that it will require all the same mounting. It is still a big dish and the concern about auxiliary booms stems from surface area, not weight. They cut the corners off, but they couldn't significantly reduce the surface area without negatively impacting the fade resistance.I currently have a GainMaster dish which uses a 2" mast. Is or will it be compatible with the slimline dish? The hope would be to just have the installer drop the new dish on the existing mast.Quite possibly if there aren't any interferences that prevent the dish from being pointed in the right direction.

Man you don't give up...
At my job (at&t) we have techs who get paid 27 bucks an hour and guess what. THEY STILL DON'T CARE ABOUT BONDING. They are highly traind and well paid.
Keep going with your bad self thinking your fighting the good fight. I for one don't want to pay through the nose for this crap. People are just down right lazy.

The three techs that came to my house cared about proper grounding. I am very happy with everything they did.
Maybe it has something to do with scarcity of jobs in this area, I don't know, but the installers here are very capable.

How do you get 3 techs to your house? I'm lucky if I can get one out, unless you mean 3 different times?

Yes I mean three different times, LOL!
First for basic install, then adding equipment twice.

I was driving to Costco in Springfield, Virginia (south of Washington, DC) on Sunday... as I was driving down Backlick Road (just off of I-95) I saw one on a house!
I stopped and pulled in the driveway just to make sure it wasn't a Dish Network dish or something like that. It DEFINITELY said "DIRECTV" on it... and it was VERY oblong. It HAD to be the Slimline. As far as size, it was on top of a two story house, so I can't say exactly, but it definitely looks bigger than my 3LNB oval dish... but not a huge clunky rectangle like the current MPEG 4 dish.
I'm excited about this because I live in an apartment, and I have balcony supports for my 3LNB. I don't think the current MPEG 4 dish would hold up, but this Slimline just might.
I didn't actually think they were out yet though.
Anyone on here live on Backlick Road? DETAILS!

After further reading it seems that this has only affected the first 17K slimline dishes produced. That's a lot of dishes!

So is the built in multiswitch not working on those first 17,000?
Is it me, or does it appear that there is space next to the right LNB (on the right), that is looks like you could add another LNB to it in the future, or am I seeing things?

That's what some thought at first, but Earl says that it just built like that to give it a more balanced look. Something is obviously not working correctly with that first batch of slimlines if you need the WB68 for it to work at all.

I heard a rumor that this dish will eventually work with just one cable running from it. Is that true? And if so, how would that work? I could just pick up a cable splitter at Radio Shack and hook up 2 boxes, or what?

Based on the relationship between your DTV receiver and the LNB's on your Dish, using a Radio Shack cable splitter will not work… Even WITH a slimline dish.

Do a search here on "FTM". Newer Receivers and DVRs will be able to use just one cable to feed both tuners in the future using this new technology.

Don't know if this is really breaking news, but I got an email from D* tech support telling me that the slimline is now available for installation. They gave me a 1-800 number for the 'Installation Services' department. I suppose it still probably depends on your local installers supply of the AT-9.
