When KCET (PBS) Los Angeles started multicasting I went into my Dish 6000 setup in the locals menu to add their SD broadcast to the current HD in my guide. When I did this it removed my HD channel 59 and mapped it to 28-02 SD only. There was no channel 59 HD, 59-01, 59-02 or 28-01 only 28-02 SD. I know the HD channel is on the air because my other Dish 6000 has it.

Is there a way to enter a channel without it being in the guide? Maybe another way to program? Any help would be appreciated, I miss my PBS HD.

Thanks

Rick

You might try manually re-adding 59 some evening after 5PM or so when the HD feed is on.

I had it on the other day w/o a problem but to tell the truth this is the 1st I've heard of the multicasting & Ch remapping so I don't intend to do a rescan until you report back!

I notice this problem with KRMA-DT here in Denver.

Most of the time they are 80-3 and sometimes 18-1

I cannot keep both channels in my HD favorites list. They do appear in the all sub list.

I have never seen them both on at the same time

Rick,

Did you find a solution for this? I am also in L.A. and am having the same problem. I can't get 59-01 (KCET-HD) on my 6000.

Graham,

No solution, but KCET and Dish are aware of this. There was a mention on Tech Chat and It has been on AVS Forum. I have been told to call or e-mail Dish so they know how widespread it is. They had this problem in Raleigh on NBC and the station turned off the SD so the 6000 owners could reprogram. Now that's great station management.

Check out AVS Forum, do a search for Dish said PBS said.

Same problem in Sacramento with KCRA/KQCA which was multicasting. Dish didn't do anything, but when I complained the the TV station, they never replied back, but about a week later they did something because it works now (but there's no ID, it's 35-01 and 35-02, rather than KCRA-3-01, and KQCA-58-01... I think the ID's are what causes the problem.

The only way I have found to get it to work is to remove the channel and add it back in when it is doing the multicast. It will pick up all the multicasts that it is doing at the time you add the channel.

If in the future they change the channel again such as 59-01 59-02 to 59-01 59-03 you will have to delete the channel and add it back again.

I have seen it properly remap the channel numbers for example it map 41-01 to 5-01 (their analog station is 5 and the want to have the digital number be the same channel even though it is on a different frequency).

KCET has fixed the problem.!!!!

Go back into locals menu and add DTV, put in channel 59 and it will map to 28-01 and 28-02. I've read where some had to delete 28-02 first and some had to unplug and do a hard reboot before programming. I don't think either is necessary. Just re-add channel 59 should work.

It shows because of forums such as DBS Talk we can get things done. Companies do read the forums even if they sometimes don't want admit it.

Good work guys!!

This morning I had the pleasure of attending a CEA sponsored meeting of HDTV manufacturers, retailers and broadcasters.

Actually there were only 1 or 2 manufacturer reps and the retailers were all relatively small specialists like me; the mass-marketers like BB, CC, Sears and even major TV chains like Ken Cranes were notable by their absence. The CEA guys were a bit miffed by this since the purpose of the meeting was discussing ways of promoting HDTV in the marketplace and reducing customer confusion & misinformation.

But several local broadcasters did attend (KABC, KTLA, KSCI & KCET...maybe 1 or 2 others who didn't speak up & introduce themselves.)

There was a cable assn attorney as well.

We had a pretty good discussion after the presentation & got a chance to chat after the formal end of the meeting.

I made it a point to talk to Mr. Horace Scott, Vice President of Engineering Operations for KCET, about the PSIP issue with whichTopanga started this thread. Coincidently, Mr. Scott told me that they think they finally solved the problem yesterday.

A few moments ago I manually removed and then manually re-added KCET DTV (ch 59) to the 8VSB in my 6000. It properly showed the remap to ch 28 and listed both 28.01 KCET HD and 28.02 KCET SD. After resaving they both appeared in the EPG and both feeds came in.

Unfortunately, the signal strength is currently varying & the picture is breaking up at the moment. But that's a separate issue I'm sure will go away.

The good news is that they figured out how to properly program the PSIP for multi-casting & channel mapping.
 :)
