So, my brother has a two box D* system and I have a 6 box D* system. I want one of the models of box that he has and he wants one I have. Can we just trade boxes and then call the CSR to have his box assigned to my account and my box assigned to his account? Or can we just swap boxes but not smart cards? Any one have any experience with this?

You can swap boxes. Just call DirecTV to reassign each box to the correct new account. You need to leave the original access card in each box.

And you need to own the boxes, they can't be leased.

Each receiver and smart card are married so they don't want you to change that. You should be able to trade a receiver with your family as long as you keep the card that came with the receiver. I don't think it matters if its leased or owned, as long as your account is in good standing. Call DirecTV to confirm.

When my RCA receiver died, my daughter gave me a surplus D10 she had. The CSR said I would have to buy a new access card for $25, so instead I bought a R15 which was free after rebate (the only deal they had at the time). Maybe the fact that the D10 had been deactivated was a factor.
