Enos Slaughter has died today.   He wasn't a nice man and many think he tried to keep black players out of Baseball..

Sad, sad, sad. :(

Fortunately, Enos and his "mad dash" are commemorated with a statue outside of Busch Stadium (and his #9 is retired) so that the younger folks will hopefully still know what a terrific player he was.

He was surely the Charley Hustle of his time .. well before Pete Rose was around. It's a sad day for baseball!!

Not too sure about the "he was not a nice man" comment above. Unfortunately, a mis-reported incident with Jackie Robinson followed him throughout his career. He and numerous teammates from the Cardinals of the late 1940's denied Mr Slaughter held any hard feelings toward Mr Robinson or others of his race.

My dad was a life long Brooklyn/LA Dodger fan. I have hear stories from him about how he threatened a strike to keep black players out. Maybe there isn't 100% truth to it, but I think he as did most players from the time, try and keep black players out of MLB. We admire these people even though they were jerks, yet give Barry Bonds a hard time because he won't sign autographs.
