View Full Version : Should I go back to the HR10-250 (Tivo) Model

I'm having a few problems:
New Recordings Deleted without Prompting
Freezing
Locked onto a channel and not recording scheduled shows.
Due to these 3 major problems, I'm thinking of going back to the HR10 Tivo Model. I know I am giving up the MPEG 4 and have to get another antenna for the local HD channels.
QUESTION: Should I go back or stay with the HR20?
Thanks guys.

My opinion...
Wait for the next software release (which should be soon).
And see if that resolves your issues... If it doesn't...
Then... sure, you have all the right in the world to go back to your HR10
Or you can have both of them hooked up at the same time.

Really, only you can answer that question for yourself.
As for what is in MPEG4: Right now only HD locals and your HD RSN. Any new national HD channels will be in MPEG4. And very soon they will convert all current HD to MPEG4 as well. Probably 2 years or less on that.
So then the HR10 would only be able to record OTA and SD channels.
So the question to you is why don't you just use both receivers? There is no reason to use only 1. Use both, record critical things on the HR10 until the HR20 becomes stable for you.

Every time Earl has indicated a new update is coming, he won't say when, but it always seems to drop that night.;)
OTA???:)

Thanks Scott and others for the reply,
I appreciate the feedback. I was curious what others would do. I know Earl recommends to keep the HR20 and hope the new software updates will solve the problem...
I only have the HR20 for the time being, Directv is sending me a HR10 for another $300, If I keep the HR20, that's still another $300 (they will refund $300 once I return 1 of them). Don't really want to keep both if I can avoid it.

You guys really like reading into my words.
As of right now, the current build that is in testing has not been authorized for release to the customers.
So until that happens......

I have both the HR10 and the HR20 hocked up to the same TV. My preference is to use the HR10 not because of the bugs with the HR20, although they are getting old and in my opinion should have been fixed by now. It is because of 30 second skip and dual buffers, I never realized how much I used these features until I started using the HR20.

Why not just use both?
Poll: Do you hate polls ?
Yes.
Do we really need a poll about everything ?
Who's happy with the HR20 ?
Should I get the HR20 ?
Should I go back to the HR10-250 ?
Has your HR20 locked up ?

+1
I never saw it as an "either/or" situation. For $5/mo. extra I have 2 HD DVRs. Plus, I sent in the form for the $5/mo. credit for being a DSL customer to pay for the extra receiver.
Simply put, there are things I prefer with each unit and until MPEG-2 goes away or the HR20 is ~ 100% reliable, hopefully that latter happens first, I'm using both.

One of my HR20's died suddenly last night. I called support and they had me try reboots and reformatting which didn't work. I had them reactivate the HR10 that they left from the upgrade and after an hour of using it with the s-l-o-w guide I couldn't stand it anymore and turned the TV off. I decided to check out this forum and saw where someone mentioned to try taking off the Ku (or whatever) converters and reboot. We'll that worked and my HR20 was in business except for my settings and all my recorded shows because of the reformat. I called support back and told them to cancel the replacement HR20 and they said it wasn't ordered anyway, despite what the previous person told me. argh
Bottom line, once you get used to the fast guide in the HR20, you can't go back to the HR10, despite the bugs - but I have never lost a recording before this happened as some others have. The slow guide drove me nuts!

Again,
I must second this comment.
Tivo based machines tried very hard to maintain their "Green line" on both tuners, or at least one if you started changing channels.
The HR20 seems to have a goal of not having any "Green line" and or dropping it the moment you change the station.
I can't stand hitting record every time I want to see what is on another station just to prevent losing my place on the current station.
Oh, and then, don't get me started about getting back to the right point, where I left off. In this type of situation, Pause is pointless. Oh yea, and Fast Forward doesn't work right now either.......
D* keep working on it.

You are referring to dual buffers here... which is well known it is not there in the R15 or the HR20... DirecTV is still deciding if they are going to include it or not in at least the HR20.
You can after all hit the BLUE button and get a one line guide on the screen to see what is on else where..

Funny, but I was having issues too, mainly BSOD, one freeze, and when I took off the B-Band converters, back in business. Hard to believe that was a "fix," but it seems to be holding in my case.
Anyone selling their HR10?

I really don't want to spend another $300 on another receiver. My HR10/Tivo unit came today. It's still in the box and I'm leaning towards keeping the HR20 and hoping they will fix the delete problem very very soon... I would keep the HR10 unit only if Directv will not charge me for the upgrade later on. But I seriously doubt that.

I went back to my HR10, but that is only because the HR20 did not give me any way to get all the major HD locals. (D* doesn't provide complete HD local service for Las Vegas.) If it weren't for the fact that the HR20 doesn't support OTA, I'd happily be using the HR20 despite it's numerous flaws. Hopefully the next software update will address some of those.
One advantage to the HR20 that has gotten some discussion but hasn't been focused on enough: SD content is clearly -- in fact, dramatically -- superior on the HR20. I cannot explain why this is the case. I haven't noticed a difference in HD, but that's mostly because I can never compare apples to apples (without Entourage being on the air, I don't watch much other HD).
I've noticed this on the toon channel (family guy) but also just noticed it now on the travel channel. It's really much nicer on the HR20.
Once the HR20 gets OTA and stability, I'll be switching to it -- and fast.
That said, the thing that I'm really looking forward to is the D* PC card under Vista. MCE is still my preferred platform, for a variety of issues.

The bugs are minor in comparison to the HR20. You are not required to get the update if your worried about some audio problems with OTA reported with the HR10 6.3a update.

Oh well that's just so surprising. How many years has the HR10 been on the market? They've had this software update in testing for quite a while, and they still can't get it right? And you Tivo apologists are willing to give them a free pass on it, while you endlessly bitch about the HR20 which hasn't even been out for two months. :nono2:

Hmmmm, I don't think anybody has trivialized the fact that some people were having BSOD's and lost recordings. Thankfully it appears the majority of that was fixed in the last update.
But I'll trivialize all day long someone moaning about caller ID not working. I mean, come on....

I agree on the caller id. If I want to know who's calling me, I look at the phone, not the TV.. But again, its advertised as a feature of the unit..

I was referring to him, because I thought I had seen posts from him bitching about the HR20. That's why I said I was "more" referring to other people, and not "just" referring to other people. It's tough to keep track of who's on my side and who's not, sometimes I'm wrong.

It looks like the HR20 is winning and I'm leaning to keep my HR20... Not because of just the poll, people have made some valid points on keeping the HR20. Plus, I realized I don't want to go backwards with older technology. If I had the cash, I would keep both. I think that would be the perfect answer, but since I don't........

I think the HR20 is an improvement in a lot of ways -- which other folks have already enumerated.
I was an early adopter with the HR10 -- full price  -- but, courtesy of D* I got to be an early adopter with the HR20 for free.
Superceding all of this is the fact that -- like thousands of people -- I got rid of my land line in the last year. Dragging my HR10 to somewhere I could do a clean complete reset and then back home again is a requirement I don't need, anymore.
