I am not trying to insinuate anything negative or disparage anyone's reputation in any way but would like some knowledgeable & educated information--that's all.I was all set to purchase a multiswitch because I'm switching from Dish Network to a DirecTV/UltimateTV box with D* and will need to purchase a multiswitch.I was all set to buy one when I ran accross this on E-Bay:

"Don't be fooled by words like "water resistant" in the descriptions of some cheap switches sold on ebay because it means nothing if it's not hermetically sealed. THERE IS NO OTHER BRAND OF WATERPROOF 3X4 MULTISWITCH ON THE PLANET AND IF SOMEBODY CLAIMS DIFFERENT THEY ARE EITHER CLUELESS OR DISHONEST. All other 3X4 MultiSwitches in existence will fail if mounted outdoors where they can get wet."

Here's the link:

Is this true? Do ALL multi switches fail eventually from being outdoors and being exposed to the elements?I live in Florida where it rains a LOT and my satellite cable runs are outside--not inside so the switch will be connected outside underneath my roof's overhang.I realize that some switches are "weather resistant" and not weather proof but is this an exaggeration or what?

The seller--Minidishes.TV--seems to have an excellent reputation with VERY good feedback listed and seem to be on the up and up and again I'm not trying to sully their reputation--I just want a 2nd opinion. Thanks :)

It's an exaggeration. Anybody who says something like "anybody who disagrees is clueless or dishonest" obviously is rather clueless themselves. Most multiswitches a pretty good about being outside. Still, I'd keep them relatively safe (not on the roof for example, and certainly not in the rain gutter downspout :) )

There is no such thing as a "waterproof" multiswitch. There are "weatherproof" multiswitches. That means they will not take immersion and last, if installed underwater. The most vulnerable part of the switch are the in/out "f" ports. The best way to install a multiswitch is out of the rain under an eave or on a wall under an eave. Use drip loops which has the cable sloping downward away from the switch. Do not install the switch with the label or the ports pointing up and down. The in-out ports need be pointed horizontal. Put a dab of not hardening 100% pure silicone grease (sold for $3 at auto parts stores as "tune up or spark plug release grease"into the port by dabbing on the center wire of the cable, before screwing it on. A dab on the threads also helps. Use an environmentally sealed "F" connector like Snap-N-Seal or Digicon. All this prevents mousture from entering the inner workings of the switch.

Also, you may make a sheet metal like "vent" cover to cover the switch, if it will be exposed to the rain.

Check out this auction for a Snap-N-Seal cable connector kit.

I bought a Spaun 2X6 multi-switch from minidishes.tv and it has worked really well. I would trust them for a waterproof switch. I don't think they cost that much more. If it is guaranteed not to fail, then that'd seal the deal for me. To be sure, though, I'd for sure put in drip loops on the lines. Good luck. You'll love your UTV units. I have two and have been very happy with them. If you are interested in the future in upgrading the HDD in them, shoot me a PM and I'll forward you the website on how to safely do the upgrade.

WOW!!! Thanks for all of your help Guys.

Zac-I figured they were stretching the truth a little bit.

Mike500-thank you very much for the professional help and advice-if I was doing the installation myself I would absolutely get that kit and thanks again for the link.Let me make sure I have this right--you recommend that the grease go on the threads and on the center wire of the cable--just a dab?

karl_f-you're right-you can't beat the price if the switch is as good as minidishes.TV claims it is.I'll definitaly take you up on that offer when I get all settled with my new system.

Thanks again Folks :)
