I have had a persistant problem which I did not have prior to installing the HR20, but don't know if this is related to my AMP or the HR20. While watching a show live with my AMP on I will get a loud BANG, like a mortor shell landed in the room. The AMP will then go off and the red light blink. A quick ON-OFF with my remote brings it back to life. My AMP is an 8 yr old Kenwood hooked up with an optical cable with a whoofer.

Anybody have a clue? Thanks.

Certainly sounds like an AMP problem. Do you have other optical audio devices connected to it, like a DVD player?

Can't say for sure, but it sounds like a capacitor or diode is intermittently shorting in the amp.

You need to have it looked at. If the protection circuit ever fails to work, it will blow a fuse, trip a breaker, and/or smoke.

No. I have a Toshiba DVD connected to my AMP that seems to work fine. But it's connected using a digital cable for my DD 5.1 and I have not been using it much lately. I guess I should test some DVD's to see if that locates the problem.

Any more tips before I pop for a new AMP?

Thanks for your thoughts. I was afraid of that! I think with the costs of repairs it might be better to buy a new AMP rather than fixing my old unit. I'm going to test my DVD player and go from there.

do you find yourself having to turn the volume up on your amp to a significantly higher level while using the HR-20 versus the DVD player?

this can sometimes be something as simple as a crossed or touching speaker wire that only trips your amp when you put a big enough load to it. it would only explain the hr-20 vs. dvd issue if you're loading up more power to the amp to make the Hr-20 audio as loud as using the DVD. just something to check.
