Dish, TWC to Provide Local Weather
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
11/8/2006 10:46:00 PM
EchoStar Communications and The Weather Channel are teaming up to offer Dish Network direct-broadcast satellite subscribers new local-weather features and severe-weather warnings.
As of 5 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, Dish customers began receiving targeted weather information determined by ZIP code, along with interactive enhancements and weather warnings, the two companies said.
The overlay mode on Dish’s TWC Weather channel provides local-weather content including current conditions, Doppler radar and short-term and five-day forecasts, and the two companies said viewers can find local-weather information for thousands of cities across the United States based on ZIP code or city listing, as well as setting a default city and saving favorite cities for faster access...

I have never seen this on TWC. Dish's web site says, "* Not available on some receiver models. " So, which models does this work on? Going to Dish ch. 100 is slow and has few weather details. So far, cable and the internet are still far better weather resources.

Doesn't work on my 522.

It is not fully operational yet. Reports are 25% of most receivers have it via channel 100. Nobody has reported the popup on 214 or the special weather alert icon on any other channel.
So far, it is barely out there to use.
We've had reports across the board on many different receiver types that have received this software ... but not all receivers of any type (except the 721) are getting it yet. It's being phased in.

Dish emailed me yesterday and told me 2-3 weeks everybody should have it.As long as these receivers get the interactive channel they will work.

I went to someones house who does have this on 100 and it loads up faster then instant weather but the load times are slow about a minute to load to a different location if you change it.I like it.It's a lot better then instant weather and you have the weather channel in the background so it's not silent like instant weather. The radar shows several states including your own.I also noticed the temperature changed 15 minutes later. That's how often they update.I assume they are waiting to get 100 turned on to all receivers before they start on 214.It looks good on 100 too.I couldn't find anything I didn't like about it.I emailed the tech forum about when 214 would start working so hopefully they will say Monday.

I'm confused since this is not the weather on the eights that I thought was coming and that I remember from cable. The cable version had several slates of detailed weather information - the E* version is more like the current instant weather.

There is 2 versions of this the first being on channel 100 and the other one on 214.Channel 214 will give you the local on the 8's slideshow like you see on cable.Once you see a banner during local on the 8's you will hit select. The version on channel 100 is a little different. It doesn't offer you the slideshow but it's similar to instant weather but better. It allows you to put up to 5 zipcodes or favorite locations by state and also has a radar which shows several states. The slideshow on 214 shows the radar from your state only.Channel 214 hasn't been updated yet but most likely in 2-3 weeks when all receivers are turned on to get the one on 100 then 214 will be too.
I've got the channel 100 version on the 510, and it looks good. I still get a "not yet available" message on my old 4900 receiver.

whats weird is that my 301 has local on the 8s but the two other 301s in our house does not. but its neat to see several places in ohio that we normally visit to see what kind of weather we will get, especially when we go visit family on thanksgiving.

That’s nothing…
I have two 4900s, one of which has no service on it since I removed it from my account a couple of weeks ago when E* took away my DNS without advance notice.
At that time, the TWC option wasn’t even in the interactive menu, but now it is, and on the receiver WITH NO SERVICE it works, but on the subscribed receiver it’s “not yet available”.
Ya know, for six years I’ve been a more or less satisfied E* sub, but this month............... :nono2:
I’m not impressed.

Good things eventually happen to the ones that wait... :D
Working on both my 622 and 301 tonight on channel 100. Nothing on ch. 214 yet. I suppose that won't come until they're sure there on no bugs on ch. 100.

Finally got it on my 522. Also got the L4.12 update overnight. Not sure if the two are connected or not. It was much, much faster than Instant Weather.

What receiver model?
A 301.
Another bug on the 301. It doesn't remember anything this morning. I had setup the default and a few favorites last night. Not only are they gone but it goes to the setup screen whenever I open TWC application on ch. 100. I also have a problem with radar initially as reported by another poster and with lockup when I try to open New City. Then I can setup favorites okay but when I exit the application it forgets everything. Have to start all over every time I open the application.
I didn't test the 301 much last night. I know favorites was working but I may not have exited the application and opened it a second time. Haven't had my 622 on yet today so I don't know whether it's working properly. I know it retained default and favorites olay last night.

I just checked my 301 to see if it still had all my favorites and settings and yes thank goodness it does as does my 510.

The new feature became available on my 322 sometime on 11/15. So far it has saved all of my favorites and no obvious bugs. I think it is a great feature, but I think the radar is a little small and unfortunately does not have the previous three hour "Radar in motion" feauture that cable does.
Of course, with cable you can't just pick and choose your city, at ANY time. Overall this is two thumbs up!
Active on both my 625 and 510. Nice information to have, but slow to access...

Geez... I wish I could force a download. I'm tired of waiting.

I wonder if there is any other receivers other then the 311s not getting this.I hope by Wednesday every receiver will have this feature so they can start putting on local on the 8's.Does anyone know if they will phase local on the 8's in slowly like they did with twc interactive weather or hit all receivers at once?
I do not have it on any of my box's yet.

Dish Network viewers can now receive targeted weather information determined by the subscriber's zip code plus additional interactive enhancements and weather warnings.
The local content by The Weather Channel, launched Nov. 8, is made possible by Dish Network's innovative interactive technology, which is available to its subscribers nationwide. EchoStar Communications' Dish Network said it currently serves about 12.5 million satellite customers.
Dish Network subscribers will be able to access local weather from The Weather Channel by going to the News menu on DishHOME (Channel 100), Dish Network's Interactive Television portal, and selecting TWC Weather. The overlay mode provides local weather content including current conditions, Doppler radar, short-term forecast, and a five-day forecast. The companies said viewers can find local weather information for thousands of cities across the United States.
Additionally, a "trigger" feature is currently in development. Set to launch in the next few months, this trigger technology will allow satellite viewers to see their local weather during the network's "Local on the 8s" every 10 minutes. Select weather alerts will be displayed during "Local on the 8s" when in effect for the area.

Ah ha, your next post was the problem.
I did not know I had to select the "News" button!
Yes, it is working on the 522 and 301 but have not checked the 510.
Here I have been waiting for hours for the box in top right to say click here for weather!
Boy, I feel stupid now:grin:

Another satisfied customer, looks like... :)
Yep, thanks much for the info!
If you read here http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=70147 then you may not consider me a happy or satisfied customer!
I'm actually very mad at Dish!
Being in an apartment, I don't have the luxury of a BUD so I have Dish or DirecTV or Charter cable(god help them!).
I had DirecTV before and they were OK but I let the sub drop.
Then I signed for Dish and have been very happy for a few years now.
Maybe the installers from the link above were mad because I was using a DirecTV multi sat dish for Dish!
For me, I could care less who makes the dish or the LNB's. As long as I get a signal then I'm happy.
The installers did make a couple of rude comments about the fact that I was using non Dish hardware. I told them that it did not matter as I've been a paying customer for about three years with the everything pak.
Either way, this is my second experience with so called Dish installers sent by Dish themselves and both times I was refused equipment!
The first time was when I first subscribed to Dish.
In order to get all my locals they said they would provide a second dish (61.5) as well as all switches needed for NO cost.
So the guy comes out and because I'm using a DirecTV dish, he refuses to add the dish needed for 61.5.
So, I used the dish that came with my Dish package and aimed it at 61.5 myself and also had to purchase a 64 switch.
That was almost three years ago and I'm still mad about that!
Now this new crap in my link above is killing me!
The only good thing about it now is that the installers will have to hookup the 622 and supply the 44 switch as the 1000+ will already be mounted and aimed.
Sorry for the rant!

Always look at the bright side - at least you got your "Weather thingy" working!
Always look at the bright side - at least you got your "Weather thingy" working!
Yep, That I did! thanks to your post!
On the other hand, I'm also going to get the VIP622 going as well.
As long as I have the 1000+ mounted and aligned then the installers HAVE to hook up the correct switch which needs no structural support.
These installers also tried to talk me into getting the whole thing from a retailer so I would not be hit with the 18 month contract.
That is fine and dandy but show me a retailer that will offer the VIP622 for $199 with the dish 1000+ and the 44 switch I need for the four tuner inputs I have.
I'd pay at most $250 from a retailer.
I myself do not mind the 18 month contract (even though I'm very pissed) as I do intend on staying with Dish.
I have an excellent credit record with them over the past three years.
They did screw me the other day however when I agreed to the upgrade to the VIP622.
They charged me the $199 and then when the installers refused the install, I called Dish back for a refund and they told me that they could not refund the payment as it has now been applied to my monthly bill even though I had a zero balance!
So now I have a big negative balance and I'm not even sure it is legal for them to use my payment for something other than what I had agreed on.
Is that legal?
I'm not really worried about it as it will almost pay my next two months.
Anyhow, Thanks Much for the Weather Thingy post!!
That was all that mattered at that moment but I just got carried away with my rant about poor local installer service.

Mine too.....
Unfortunately TWC continues to have problems on my 301, although it works perfectly on the 622. Finally got time this morning try (1) unplugging it and (2) pulling the smart card. The appplication works but won't remember my location or favorites list so it goes through initial setup each time TWC is opened. Called Tech Support. They didn't find anything about a known bug so they filed a report. Said if it isn't fixed in a week or so they might have to replace the receiver.
If anyone else is having this problem, please notify Tech Support.
