The built in Blue Ray player for $499 is tempting me! At least with this, it will always play PS games. If you fork over $999 for the pure Blue Ray player and it fails as a media, your hosed.

I wonder how many will hit each store (like Walmart etc) this this week. It's also tempting to get one just to try and ebay it! ;)

Is it backward compatable with PS2 games?

I already have the 360 and the HD DVD add-on so I'll pass too.

I heard about this but didn't think it was out just yet. What does the add on drive run? Where can you pick one up?

I got mine on friday from EB since I preordered. They were wanking me around so I checked around to see who else had it and Circuit City had them in a lot of their stores. You have to ask though b/c they don't display them.

I will need to get a hdmi switch, though, since I only have one input for my tv.

So is your primary reason is that it is a $499 BluRay player?
Or that it is a Playstation 3 that has a BluRay player

What makes you think that the $499 BluRay isn't going to fail on certain Media? Most of the BluRay players out there (just like the HD-DVD players), have the ability to upgrade their firmware for better compatibility.

The only reason I am remotely tempted to buy one, is to turn it around on Ebay and make a serious profit on it.

I hadn't heard this, everything I've read says it will play all your PS1 and PS2 games, do you have a link or anything you can point to? I'm not a big gamer but I too am tempted (I'd probably go for the $599 with the bigger HD) by the built in Blu-Ray player. The PS2 will do 1080i over component on a couple of games - namely Gran Turismo, and it looks awesome, I have to believe the PS3 games would be even more stunning. But if it won't play all my PS2 games I'm not sure I'd jump in right away.

In any case I'm more likely to wait a year and see if any major issues show up with it.

Primary reason for me would be the Blu-Ray player for half price. The kids would love it for games and me as well every once in a while.

If Blu Ray should fail as a movie medium at least this would carry on as a game player. However see my other thread about the Porn Industry chosing Blu-Ray over HDDVD for their first release as a possible boost in Blu-Ray sales just like what happened when they chose VHS over Beta back in the late seventies.

GREED! Good old fashioned American GREED! !pride
It's the greedy, profiteering peeps that makes these products difficult, if not
impossible for the ordinary guy to buy. I wouldn't buy anything for one red
cent over retail -- there's nothing on Earth I want that bad. :nono:

I tried to get one of the new Elmos for my new grandson, but no, the bleepin'
hordes always get them first -- to sell on Ebay! :grrr:

Did I spell hordes correctly?

I have heard that it all depends on the game developer. If they adhered to the PS2's design guidelines then the software fixes in the PS3 should be able to play it. But it has been a while since I read this and do not have any first hand experience.

about 200 games are not compatible.
Lets see if they do what mircosoft did and update the software via a Download.

Ah yes, the PLAN was to make about 15-20% of the machines that demand wanted so that all those could be sold on eBay for FIVE TIMES list price with Sony getting NONE of that - and not being able to sell another MILLION units at a price of over $500 each.

Yeah, Sony is PURPOSELY walking away from a HALF BILLION DOLLARS.

Yup. All that investment to make something that nobody can buy.
