View Full Version : Is there a MPEG4 footprint map?

I was wondering is there a footprint map of how far MPEG4 signals reach. I am curious if I would be able to receive Norfok, VA MPEG4 signals in Wilson, NC 27896 once they go online in December. I of course would have to "move" in order to receive them.

There are Ka and Ku band transponders, but not MPEG-4.
Irrelevant type for ask about footprint, like how a color of your car affect acceleration :).
I don't think it is irrelevant at all. That is a valid question for those of us who don't live near a major city.
I'd like to see one just because I'm curious. In Austin I can see 6 KA transponders, all with signal readings in the 90's if not 100. Now I know D* isn't use 6 transponders for the three HD stations that they're providing in Austin so I'd like to know what other cities transponders I am seeing.

Aren't they delivered via spotbeams at this point? I thought I remembered seeing a spotbeam map at some point...
If so, here's a spotbeam map: http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/dtv.html

Nothing irrelevant about it, when those are his concerns. :).............but, it has been moved into the "General Discussion" forum.

This information is probably out-of-date, and it does not include spot beams from the new 99-deg and 103-deg Ka-band satellites (that beam the MPEG4 channels).
I agree it would be nice to have a map like this, but I haven't seen one yet.

My post deleted totally, but the URL should stay: WWW.LyngSat.com

Lyngsat just shows the channels that are beamed from each satellite. It does not show their transponders, or the spot beam footprints.

If there is the info available, he DOES !
After little research on the site - http://www.lyngsat-maps.com/amc4.html or http://www.lyngsat.com/space1.html

Sorry but I don't see what this has to do with showing what the spot beam coverage areas are for SW1 and SW2. The first link shows the CONUS coverage for AMC4 (what the heck does that have to do with this?) and the 2nd link just lists some transponder frequencies. What folks would like to see is something like this http://ekb.dbstalk.com/pictures/echo8.gif, which is for E8 for the two D* Spaceway satellites.

It was examples how Lyngsat listed, not for SW1/2 satellites.

according to DIRECTV.com you already get HD locals from the Raleigh-Durham DMA (NBC,ABC,CW) so probably no...why get locals from another market anyways?? I live in an area where I still get them with an off air antenna, but they say that my DMA will be up and running HD in December too...
It just doesn't make any sense...it's like living in San Antonio and wanting Dallas locals...

It does make sense for some. What if your local stations stink (ie: they quite often fail to pass the network HD feed, or they pre-empt a lot of programming) and you would like to get the shows from another source? If you can already get your locals OTA, then this gives you a second shot.

I already receive all Raleigh-Durham HD by antenna. As a Washington Redskin fan I would be able to watch all preseason, regular season, and all team shows on the Norfolk channels without Sunday Ticket. It would be great to receive these thru Directv as I can not receive them thru my antenna. Hopefully a map will surface soon or a list of Norfolk transponders that I can check on my HR20.

Maybe once all of the HD MPEG 4 locals go live someone will have the time to make a map

If I have followed this and other threads correctly, and my situation is as follows, then I should be able to get HD networks.
We currently live in Charlotte and I get all broadcast networks OTA. This coming year we will start construction on a home in Savannah, GA. From what I understand, the Savannah stations do not broadcast in HD. Granted, this may change in the next year. I contacted D* and they told me I could get a national feed, NY stations, with a waiver from the local Savannah stations. Posters on other boards have indicated fat chance of that. What I want is to be able to get the major networks in HD, which again is not broadcast OTA by the Savannah stations.
From this thread it seems that I should be able to change my billing address when I move to a friend's address in, say, Charleston or other metropolitan area with good HD coverage and get my locals from that location. I really don't care what newscast I get and I'm not trying to get a blacked out sports event; I just want to watch '24' and 'CSI' etc in HD. It appears that Savannah should be within the spot beam of the Charleston stations. It is easy to come up with a reason to do what it is you want to do, but there should be a way to get the prime time shows in HD when the local stations won't pony up the bucks to broadcast in HD and won't grant a waiver.
Will this work?
Disclaimer. First post here, but I've been over on the Tivo community forum since I have the HR10-250, but posted over here because locals will require the HR20 and it isn't Tivo. I'm in the queue for the HR20.

This info is also of interest to those who are currently being shut out of getting their RSN in HD--even though they may be under the spotbeam--and considering a "move" to get it.
AFAIK, there are no spotbeam maps out there for the Ka beams carrying the HD locals.
