Hey I have and installer coming out today to try and find why I keep getting the 771 searching for sat error. What should I make sure he checks. My signal strengths are all above 90. Thanks

In my case, the 771 errors are related to a big fat pine tree between me and my shiny new AU9-S (slimline 5 lnb dish), blocking the 110 bird. My signal strengths are very
good on 109 and 119. The tree is in my neighbor's yard and he's left town for the
holidays....

Hope you find a faster resolution.

I dont think its the tree. I seems to happen the most on the channels in the 600 range. what sat are they on?

Have him look at he cabling. When they installed my dish, they used some of the old cabling and used barrel extenders. They came back and recabled one run from the grounding block to the receiver and it seemed to fix it. (note: this happened yesterday, so maybe it is too early yo tell, but yesterday was the first time since July that I did not have the searching for satellite signal.)

Sounds good Its all new wire but there is a connection outside that is between the dish and receiver.

Should I have a signal on 99 I live in Los Angeles CA. I have the BBC on.

Could be a bad multiswitch built into the LNB.

that's happening to me with 10b. if you have the new software, dont rip apart your system looking for a fix. it's the new software.

LA HD locals are on 103, on either one or two transponders. I think the closest location to you that has 99 signals is the San Diego spotbeam but do not know for sure.

I am not on 10b, I have had this problem on and off since I got this thing. IT happens on both tuners and the is not one "thing" that makes it happen. I think its in the wiring or the Lnb's Switch. We will see in a few hours.
THanks for the reply.

i had a very very similar problem... the problem was intermittent and directv sent out 4 different techs who either saw there was a problem and didn't know how to fix it or showed up when everything was working properly. finally i got frustrated and kindly asked retention if i could contact a professional installer myself that I trusted, pay him out of my pocket and get credit on my account to offset the installer's fee. they agreed and i got in touch with a very friendly and knowledgeable installer via www.dbsinstall.com search. He charged me $250 (he had to come from NJ into Manhattan, which is why I think it was so expensive). He showed up with everything spare dishes, multiswitches, LNBs, etc.... took his equipment to the roof and all realigned my dish and it fixed everything. he said it was off a good 1/2" on the azimuth and the tilt was off by a click. this may not be your problem, but if after a couple technicians you are getting frustrated I suggest you do the same. the installers that directv use in nyc are contracted through halsted and they were all jerks or morons that relied solely on their signal meter with no real knowledge of how things work.

The guy that put it up was OK, Honestly I know more about, STOP I just got 771 on channel 612 as we speak, wish they were here now. He was ok but lacked the technical skill that I would have liked to have seen. Old truck with random parts in the back, He used my ladder and tools, I wish they would let you put your own stuff up. Oh well.

It looks like 101 might be the problem. signal meter acting wierd.

this might be useful. you can determine which channels are affected by the lack of signal on a given sat/transponder.

I had a tech out for 771 last week, he found a severely corroded barrel connection from the satellite where it enters the attic portion of run to the multiswitch. Although this was a relatively new install, couple months, he said he's seen worse and recommends a silicone type sealant for the ends to prevent this. I would re-check all connectors and make sure they are weather tight after ruling out the dish and multiswitch.

You said you had the BBC's connected. That is a big cause of this as well, bad BBC's.

We they replaced my AT-9 with the new slimline AU9-S. It looks much better. I had the BBC's on and off and it made no difference. We will see if this fixes the problems. I had no signal on the vertical transponders on 101 before and now they all seem to work.

Glad it's doing better. I was going to suggest that since the neighbors were out of town to crank up the chain saw.

i only see these on local hds and usually changing channel makes it go away

I never saw it on any hd channels. As it turns out after looking at the channels that were on 101 it happened on those channels only. I think this is fixed. Time will tell but it makes since. The installer said that the AT-9 which they are not using anymore is prone to this.

I live in San Diego and we also get our locals on 103. I get 0 on transponders 1-6. All the rest are N/A. My installer said that 99 is not in use yet.

I started getting the 771 message a few weeks after my AT9 dish was installed but only for the channels in the HD package, 70-79, which are all on sat 119. I called DirecTV and Ironwood came out to look at the dish. I suspected it was a transponder and the installer that came out agreed. Because he said that they no longer could get LNBs for the old dish, he said he would replace it with the new dish, but didn't have any on the truck. The next day they send out a guy with an LNB, but it was for the new dish and it didn't fit the old dish. He ended up wire-tying the two black wires together on the old dish that go to the outboard LNBs, right where the connection goes into the outboard LNBs. Apparently this puts more pressure on the ridiculously poor connection and that fixed the problem. No sooner than this guy leaves, the original tech called to say that he had a dish and would be over to install it. When I told him that someone was just here and fixed the problem, he said that he couldn't install the new dish if the problem was resolved. Bummer, I could have had a newer dish!
