dish net 721 recording question???

Why cant i record my dish net channels directly through my reciever by selecting the 721 source (using optical audio and s-video cables) rather than having to run rca cable vcr outs from the 721 receiver back into my receiver (onkyo 797), thus taking up two video sources???? Is this a proprietary limitation? I cant run directly into vcr because i have a generic input from my reciever to record other sources. I also would not want to use the vcr out as my primary source because these are composite vs svidio and digital outputs. Is there something I am missing? Thanks

I thin that the problem is its actually a limitation of your audio receiver.

Your receiver may not convert S Video into composite which is being fed to your VCR.

I know this is a problem with my Denon receiver.
