After a week or so of on and off futzing trying to get my music library streaming to my HR20's, I finally have success. :)
First try was TwonkyVision. It was very promising at first, especially given the built-in support for iTunes, which I use. After installed the LPCM plug-in, my music was immediately available on my receiver. Too bad that EVERY file I tried to play sounded like it was playing in slow motion, as had been reported by others here. That was the end of that experience.
Next was WMP 11. Again, it was a breeze to set-up. Getting my music to display on the HR20 was a different story. In short, what I found was that if you have a small number of songs in your library, it works great. Once I added my entire library (all mp3's; 22,000+ songs totaling over 110GB) it was a diffent story as I could not access a single track. It seemed as if the unit were timing out trying to retrieve the lists of albums/artists/songs or something. So I called it quits on that one too.
This afternoon I decided to try TVersity (http://www.tversity.com/). It was almost too easy. Here is what I did:
Download and install the software
Reboot the PC and verify that the TVersity service starts after reboot
Verify that your firewall allows the executable to accept incoming connections
Go to the Settings tab; under General change the 'Playback Device' to Xbox 360 and under Transcoder change 'When to transcode' to always (read these somewhere else here - not trying to take credit for them)
Restart the TVersity service
Restart the HR20
And just like that (about 30 minutes of effort), I have my entire library accessible on both HR20's - one hard-wired to the router and one using the Linksys Wireless Gaming Adapter.
So, if you were like me and REALLY wanted to get this cool feature working and were pulling your hair out, give TVersity a try. Hope this information can help some of you out! :D

Does this work with Itunes?
I use iTunes and an iPod. I guess I forgot the step where I added my music... I had to browse to my music directory and add it manually as a "monitored" directoy. After I hit the OK button and the hard drive cranked for a while, it worked fine. So it worked in my case, but there is no built-in support for iTunes. And all of my music was in plain mp3 format, but I'm sure it would NOT work for music puchased through the iTunes store.

Awesome.....I've been doing alot of researching on the XBox360 connectivity Forum and people are dying over there trying to get WMP11 to work. However, the solution there now looks like Tversity too !!!! They now have XVID, DIVX and even VOBs streaming. Earl, check these links out......

I know this is all XBox360 but it is upnp and thus should be same for D* if/when they enable video.
All this is NO MCE....(XP)....no ViiV....standard stuff.
So, now all we need it D* to work with Tversity and get them to wirte the driver to HR20 like they did for XBox360. D* are you listening ? ;)

DirecTV has already stated, in the "Official" DirecTV ViiV document, that Video streaming is planned.
ViiV is just a "standard"... provided these other media servers comply to the similar standard that ViiV is based off... There really shouldn't be a problem as the feature matures.

Also, important tid-bits.............don't know if you ran into these but they are gotchas for some people's issues with upnp connectivity. I'm cutting-n-pasting from various tagged threads I have. Call these trobleshooting...
If your router is set to it's default settings then disable firewall should be marked, enable filter multicast.
upnp Services to make sure are running on the PC.
1) Go Into Services under Admin Tools
2) Scroll down to Universal Plug & Play Host...double click and set startup type to auto and hit Start.
3) Same for SSDP Discovery Services
4) Same for HTTP SSL
Make sure UPnP Framework is enabled in your Firewall....Norton, Windows, etc.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/firewall/norton.mspx
Note, XBox360 kinda needs static IP but it sounds like HR20 wants dynamic....not sure about Tversity/HR20 would need. Anyway, I think you still have to open/forward a port in the Router for Tversity ? If so here is nice progam for those worried about doing this and also has great how-to guides for simple changes with every router listed you could think of. It also shows how to setup static IP if this is needed for HR20. Really nice site.

Tversity doesn't care about MCE or ViiV for video. ;) To quote them they are just a Media Server for:
Devices supporting the UPnP AV / DLNA standard (which is the de-facto standard for connecitivity between devices in the digital home). This includes devices like networked TVs, DVDs, Stereo Receivers, Digital Media Adapaters/Receivers (including the Xbox 360), Mobile Phones, Satellite and Cable set-top-boxes and more.
Here is the only system requirements....I'm hoping that Tversity won't have to transcode if D* will allow playback of MPEG2 & VOB files. MS's nasty little requirement for WMV format on XBox360 is why they have to transcode for that.
Minimum System Requirements
Pentium III 700 Mhz or better (Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz with support for Hyper Threading is recommended)
128 MB of memory or more (512 MB recommended)
50 MB of disk space (At least 1 GB of free space is recommended for cache area of transcoded media)
Windows XP or Windows 2000
DirectX 9.0 or higher
Windows Media Player 9.0 or higher
Audio enabled on the computer running the software
Flash version 7 for the GUI (MSIE version 6.0 required for full GUI functionality, other Flash enabled browsers such as Firefox will have most but not all of the functionality.)
Comments
The minimum requirements will allow real-time transcoding of media files with bitrates up to 300-400 kbps. Higher bitrates will require faster machines.
Media files that do not require transcoding, i.e. can be played by the media hub as is, will work well on systems meeting the minimum requirements, disregarding their bitrate, and in fact can even work on slower machines.
Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz with support for Hyper Threading and with 512 MB of memory is recommended for real-time transcoding of standard definition video (e.g. WMV 720x480 1.5Mbps). Dual core or dual CPU systems with 1 Gbyte of memory are required for real-time transcoding of high definition video.
Non real-time transcoding of any bitrate video can be done on any machine, with the speed of the machine determining the time it takes to complete the transcoding.
Transcoding of some file formats require the installation of third party directshow filters that are compatible with TVersity. TVersity recommends:
ffdshow - for MPEG2/4, H.264, Divx, Xvid, AAC, FLAC, Vorbis, FLV, and many more
Haali Media Splitter - for better MP4 and H.264 support and for OGG/OGM and Matroska.
Real Alternative - for Real audio and video.
Quicktime Alternative - for MOV.
MP4 Source/Splitter* - for better MOV support.
FLV Splitter* - required for FLV playback.
I have gotten all three to work (Tversity, Twonky and WMP11)...but...all three do the play for about 15 minutes and lose connection thing. Not sure where to go from here.....very frustrating!
Not sure if the same applies to TVersity but with Twonky as long as you have a slide show playing with your music it will play all night. I had 6 hours of pictures and music on Christmas Eve and it never stopped once.
Hopefully the same applies for TVersity as it is the free choice of the two that work best.

Its funny, the same experience you describe with Tversity, I had with Twonky, and my PC is almost 7 years old. Twonky has been nothing short of perfect for me. I paid the purchase price within a day of installing!
Thanks for sharing how you got it to work. Until I set it XBox 360 the mp3s wouldn't play. They all had 'x's.
I'm having a problem with the photos though.
Evidently just about any photo taken with my Sony Cybershot Cam has been given the 'X'. I tried changing the resolution to match 3072X2304. Restarted the service but it didn't help. I changed it to a low resolution too. That didn't help.
I read about the file structure issue on their forum but that can't be the issue because there is a file working within these folders. It's one of those burst images. That plays. Strange. I see that the burst image file is much smaller, only 430 kb. The other files are usually over 2.5 MB.
Does TVersity have a problem serving up large picture files?
Is there anything I can change?
Any ideas?
Thanks.

TVersity isn't working for me. So far my only workable solution has been Twonky. I saw TVersity in my Network Connections initially, but for some reason no longer. I'll play with it for a little bit more and see what happens.
EDIT: An update - when I switched TVersity's Media Playback Device to Automatic, Network Places does see the TVersity server. However, still not recognizable by the HR20.
I'm back with Twonky. For me it's the most stable, plays all my pictures, and mp3s. I can't explain why they play at normal speed but they do.
WMP can't handle some of my large file folders. Tversity can't handle large file sizes. It plays my old digital cameral photos from an Olympus, with 3 megapixel pics but as I said not the 7.1 megapixel Sony source files. Maybe if they truly supported the HR20, it would.
I wish I could get a reliable free server but for me the winner is Twonky.

I really can't comment since I've not installed and tried (waiting for video support from D*) but Tversity does support video playback of large Divx & VOB files for the XBox360 so I'm guessing they are larger than your pic files.:) Anyway, I agree I think all this for the HR20 is not quite ready for prime-time yet. I really don't mind paying for a good Media Server software package....actually would prefer to in order to get long term support.....but first as you said D* has to figure out how/when they are going to enable video. Personally, I'm not going to go thru all this bleeding edge for just pics/mp3s. Also, if D* decides only to officially support this through MCE/ViiV then I'm off to another avenue.
Guess I'll wait and see.....interesting to see the feedback.

I got Twonky working last night and all was good. I have it running over a 54Mb wireless connection and I have had no dropout or other issues...
Since TVersity is free, I decided to give it a try. After changing my playback device to XBOX, I can play MP3s, but I cannot get my photos to display at all.
Any suggestions?

Anyone got this working on Windows 2003 Server?
My media library is on a server
I can get it the HR20 to work fine with my Windows XP machine running WMP 11. But with TVersity, the HR20 sees it, even sees my media, but all the MP3s have an "X" next to them. Can't play them?
I changed the service account to an admin account like the docs said, but still stuck.

nevermind, I forgot the change the setting on TVersity to "Always Transcode" it was set to automatic.
That fixed it. So if you can view pictures but not play MP3s. that is your problem (also make sure it is set to XBOX360).
TVersity appears to be the best solution for my needs. I've tried WMP11 and Twonky. They both really drained the resources on my PC. TVersity seems to be behaving much better than the other two.

Hello All,
Been lurking for awhile and I REALLY appreciate all the help and insight I've gained from the contributors. I took the plunge and set up my HR20 with a wireless gaming adapter (g) with Excellent signal strength and TVersity. I also have an HP MediaVault NAS that streams media, but it doesn't seeem to do a great job. I am now running TVersity.
The whole setup seems kind of buggy to me. I can view photos, but like others, not the larger files. I can get to my music folder, but since it has hundereds of artists, scrolling through line by line in alphabetical order is tedious and slow. Navigating the folders in general seems slow and every now and then if I select a folder it will lock up and have to hard reset the HR20. Also while navigating I'll get a lot of "unable to access" errors.
Sorry for just complaining without offering any solutions, but is Twonky significantly better? What about WMP11? Has anybody tried all three? Anyway, we are on the bleeding edge with this stuff so issues are to be expected.
Thank you all for all the great info here and if I ever can I'll try to add on.

I have used Twonky, WMP11, TVersity, and Nero.
WMP11 - Very flaky in my home setup
TVersity - Also very flaky in my home setup
Twonky - Worked very well, never had a problem, I let the 30 day trial expire
Nero 6 - Already had this software, turned on MediaHome and it did not work at all
Nero 7 - Upgraded this software, turned on MediaHome and it works.
So here is what it cost me. I spent $50 bucks on the wireless birdge and $60 bucks on the software upgrade, probably needed it anyway since I use it a lot making my own DVD's. There you go, $110 for me and I still ask why I need it. I use my stereo to listen to music. My portable will play the pictures on the TV. Hum!

I can vouch for this. WMP11 is a joke, and Tversity has worked perfectly for me for several days now, with no cut-offs, no freeze ups, and no bugs. I am so excited! And I can't wait till they enable streaming video from my computer too!
I finally got TVersity to work and show all of my music on the network. However, all of the music has an "X" and I can't play anything. Anyone know why, and how to fix it?
My guess would be that you didn't follow this instruction from the first post in this thread:
Go to the Settings tab; under General change the 'Playback Device' to Xbox 360 and under Transcoder change 'When to transcode' to always.

OK... so first this first, thanks to everyone who has posted how to use TVersity. I got it working pretty easily once I got the bridge working (more of a pain). however I can for the life of me figure out how to stop a song once it is playing..... it seems like I have to wait for the song to end before I can get my TV audio back. any suggestions... I dont want to do shuffle till I know cuz I would hate to have to do a RBR since I have not had to do once since 134.

I have found ( not sure if its a bug ) that if the song is playing because you selected it in the menu that you can just hit stop. If you were playing a song and hit FFWD to go to the next song STOP will stop the playing provided this is the first or second song you played. If it is the third or more song the STOP button usually doesn't work and I have to wait for the song to end, to regain control of the audio.

I'm finding that UPnP is neither U nor PnP. I'm trying to find a UPnP server that will work with not only my HR20 but also with my Netgear MP101 and my Linksys WMLS11B music players. Here's what I found so far.
Netgear Media Server -- The best one for my MP101, as you would expect. WMLS11B won't play a thing from it. Won't transcode for the HR20.
TVersity -- Works with all three for just playing music. MP3 tag information not passed to MP101 or WMLS11B. Playlist / artist / genre buttons don't work.
On2Share -- Plays on MP101 and WMLS11B. Won't transcode for HR20. Same thing about playlist / artist / genre buttons not working.
Windows Media Player -- Plays OK with MP101. Playlist button works, but artist / genre buttons don't. WMLS11B gives me "server error." Didn't try with HR20.
MusicMatch Jukebox -- Works really well with MP101 and WMLS11B. Tags and all buttons work. Can't get it to transcode for HR20.
TwonkyMusic -- Didn't try with WMLS11B. Plays music with HR20 and MP101. Tags and playlist button work, but artist / genre buttons don't. My trial period expired. Unless somebody can tell me how to reset the trial, I'm going to give up on that one. I won't buy it unless I can try it with all three.
FUPPES -- Looks really simple. Too simple. MP101 can't find server. Didn't try with HR20 or WMSL11B. I got an error message that said "LAME transcoder not found", so it might work with the HR20 if I installed the transcoder. I did try it with WinAmp, and it did find the server. Just displays songs as one big list. Won't sort into artists / genres / albums.
SimpleCenter -- MP101 says "Connecting to SimpleCenter", then locks up. Didn't try anything else.
Linksys WRTSL54GS wireless router with UPnP server -- Don't even get me started on this piece of junk. Doesn't work right with ANYTHING. I'll be returning this soon.
Anybody have any more servers for me to try?
Other than resizing my pictures, is there something I need to do in order to get Tversity to show my 5MP JPGs? I changed the size to match the resolution of the photos, but they still show Xs. Resizing them to something like 800x600 works fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks for sharing how you got it to work. Until I set it XBox 360 the mp3s wouldn't play. They all had 'x's.

I read about the file structure issue on their forum but that can't be the issue because there is a file working within these folders. It's one of those burst images. That plays. Strange. I see that the burst image file is much smaller, only 430 kb. The other files are usually over 2.5 MB.

Well I set mine to XBOX & I still just get the little red x's. Pictures display just fine. Now here is the kicker. I am running WinXP Pro SP2 upstair, with the HR20 & my XBOX 360 connected via Linksy wireless ethernet bridges. When I still had the one bridge, the HR20 would play te mp3's. I bought a second wireless bridge, last Friday, & hardcoded ip's for both the HR20 & the 360. I specifically port forwared tjat 41-whatever port for both devices by its respective ip address on my internal Lan.
The 360 playes mp3; & video. To include HD @ 720p if I hit pause & let it "cach up" enough. Pictures still work great on the HR20 but nothng but red x's for mp3's.
Any suggestions from anybody?

OK so I got it to work with very liitle effort and the price is right, at least for music. But until D* comes up with a useable navigation interface it won't be of much use to anyone who has a sizeable library. I have 10k + songs and I frankly just got tired of page down trying to sort through the artist list. I never got past the "A"'s. No way I would ever get to U2 and such. If the navigation thing could get sorted out I might even convince my wife it's easy enough to use that she might try it since it is convenient. Another issue in my setup is that I use digital sound and I have my amp setup for "TV" sound, emphasis on center channel and in general not idea for sound. I would be nice to change the surround parameters to make it plain stereo or 4 channel stereo. Boy if that could be done than it would be really cool.

I have 10k + songs and I frankly just got tired of page down trying to sort through the artist list. I never got past the "A"'s. No way I would ever get to U2 and such.
I am in the same boat with 17k + songs. The only solution I have found is a folder system created by me (not iTunes etc). I have an "A" folder for A artists and "B" for the B's etc. for those artist that I have say more than 10 - 15 songs I created a subfolder for them. Just trying to help.

I've seen posts saying to set the device on TVersity to X-Box 360. Was that before there was an option to set it for the "DirecTV HR20 HD Receiver" or does setting it for the HR20 not work?

One of the things that was bugging me was that the HR20 only plays MP3's. I have all M4A (AAC/Itunes format). They are not DRM'ed it's all owned material. WMP11 required me to convert all of these to MP3 before the HR20 could play them. With TVersity, I can keep them in M4A format and transcode them to MP3 on the fly.
I also have no trouble with pictures other than the size of the pictures on my TV.

OK - here is the deal - I tried WMP11 to play my tunes via the HR20 - no luck - the only ones that I could play were the ones that I had saved on my PC from CDs that I own.
So, I tried TVersity. With that, and the correct settings (Transcode=Always, and device set as the HR20), I can see all of my tunes in the HR20 menu with the musical notes beside them. However, when I try to play any of those (that are not ones that I saved on my PC from the CDs that I own), the HR20 tries to play them, but then returns an "Unable to Access Media" error. Anyone know what's up? My firewall is allowing access for the TVersity Media Server. Still unable to figure this one out.
Thanks!

I had to install additional software in order to make .m4a files play on the HR20 with Traversity. Specifically I had to install Haali Media Splitter found at haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

This afternoon I decided to try TVersity It was almost too easy.
For Vista firewall, I had to allow Traversity.exe and allow a TCP & UDP port 41952. Perhaps you don't need both TCP & UDP but I did both and Traversity now works great with my HR20.

Yeah we can kick back and laugh at the PC ppl having trouble...:D
version 0.9.10.7 is out. I just got a PS3 yesterday, & was have problems. Upgraded & all is good. My 360 now even shows RSS feeds which it never did before, but I get the white "x'es" whenever I try to play any mp3. I think this is due to the HR20 software version I am on & since D* is slowly rolling out a new national release, hopefully that problem will be solved soon.
Pictures are as slow as ever. I'm on a wired 100MB Ethernet.

I've downloaded the Haali Media Splitter per your (and TVersity's) suggestion. I have a bunch of .m4a files that I own (no DRM). Now that I've downloaded and installed the Media Splitter is there anything else that I need to do to get the TVersity/Haali combo to work properly to display my photos? Does Haali just work in the background or are there some settings that I need to set to get things working properly. Thanks

Okay, so TVersity completed scanning my folders and it's still very slow and I many times get an error message. It even crashed my unit for the first time in probably 6 months. And I'm only trying to do photos. I have no interest in music, which I imagine would be a lot more demanding.

If you're not running the latest CE, then wait for it to go national. The new CE has dumped the thumbnails and is dramatically faster.

For pictures, would it make a difference if I'm running it on a slowish machine (1 ghz; 256 mb RAM)? And, it's pulling from a network drive (on a speedier machine) and then coming across my wireless network through an Apple Airport Express.
I do see that TVersity and mediaserver.exe are taking up a bit of memory. What is mediaserver.exe? Is that for tversity or for WMP11?

I'm on a wired network, so I can't answer your question. I also have 2 ghz CPU /w 2GB of RAM, but I don't know how significant that is. Mediaserver.exe is part of TVersity.

The HR20 only supports music and pictures right now, no video.
Well until I rebooted I have audio, picture, and video menues on the HR20-700. Now I only have audio & pictures, but I'm going to try a few things to see if I can get it back.
Well I got the menu option back, but anything that has a live feed for video (folders with content or streaming video) does nothing anymore when selected. If it is empty, then the next level subfolder is displayed. So the video menu is just a tease.
Too bad I can't play any music. Get the big X. Previously I got the "Unable to find media" message, but at least my songs were listing their play times. I'm going to rebuild the database and see if it works in the morning.

After following all the directions from previous posts, my HR20 does not see TVersity while using Vista x64 however it does see TVersity when using XP x32. Yes....But...is the proper answer to this question.
Please take a look at the following thread:

Podcasts & Featured Streams work very well with the latest version. But, you have to go into the code of TVersity to make a small change. The instructions are on the thread linked above.

If it is when you try to play - what kind of files are you using and were they purchased online or ripped by you ?

What kind of files are they - like mp3,wma or flac ?
If you getting the list of songs - then the basic upnp must be working so I would look at the file types.
Couple of quick things you can check - make sure you can play the songs back in windows media player. Also check the last tab of the tversity application - verify that transcode always is checked - the HR20 expects pcm.

Ok I got it working!! YES! :)
Here's what I did, according to TVersity, and heck maybe I missed this someplace.
Stop sharing media via WIndows Media Player 11, the Zune software and Window Media Connect. This is a requirement for Xbox 360 users and a recommendation for users of other devices.
So I turned that off, then I opened up port 41952 on my firewall, then restarted TVersity, and BAM, it works now, my music shows up!! :D
The only other question I have is how do you go back to the list of songs on the HR20, what key do you press, or do you have to press Menu, Music & Photos, etc.?

Congrats -
Not a hundred percent certain if its just CE software or the national - if you hit the Left Arrow button - it should go back to the last screen you were on.
FFWD/RWD: No - TVersity expects the AVTransport service to be implemented by the renderer (the HR20) but that is not currently implemented - so no trickplays. It is possible TVersity may implement a server side AVTransport at some point or of course the HR20 is still beta so that may be coming.

Not sure what is happening here...
So, I've been using my TVeristy server with my PS3 for some time. Works decent enough, but now that I installed my HR-20 tonight I want to try it out there.
So, nothing seemed to show up (I have tested the HR-20 and Internet and Network connection are active). I've refreshed and restarted TVersity several times, and RBR the HR-20 as well... am I supposed to see a new menu option somewhere, or how do access the files on the HR-20?
I can access the TVersity server from my PS3 and from my computers on the network, but nothing from the HR-20 yet. Even if I change the settings from "auto detect" to "HR20" nothing seems to show up.
I have checked to ensure I'm forwarded the port to the HR-20 IP, and all other network devices work.. just no the HR-20 yet. Do I have to wait some length of time for the options to show up in the menu or what am I missing?

**BUMP**
Verified again tonight that my PS3 can see and access Tversity. I can remove the ethernet cable, plug into the HR-20 and run the testing (everything appears good there). I can see the HR-20 on my network (via the DHCP table on my router).
Can't seem to get the HR-20 to show me photo / music options.
Is there somewhere special to look, and maybe I'm just not seeing it? When I hit menu on the HR-20 remote (actually my Harmony) I don't see any options for music or pictures. Where do people see these menu options at?
It can take time. I had quite the saga of rebooting my machines with several other devices being able to see my computer for media sharing but not the HR20. The HR20 had On Demand just fine. I went in and competely disabled the windows firewall as well and still nothing. Then a couple of days later, the menu item just showed up. :whatdidid
Now, I just have to figure out how to do something as I can see songs but nothing will actually play.

Hmm... well, that's not encouraging at all, but informative which is really what I'm looking for so thank you.
I have the On Demand option when I hit menu, but when I select On Demand, nothing happens but the blue LED blinks and the "thunk" sound effect is heard. It's like it's a viable option, but it won't let me do it.
I'm on the latest (x018b I think it is) software on the HR-20, and I initially tried the newest Tversity software, but heard there was issues, so I downgraded to the previous version. Since then, as I stated before, the PS3 works just fine across the exact same ethernet cable, and my router can see (and properly labels the device as HR-20) the D* box... but the menu options have not shown up no matter how many resets I've done. :(
Here's to hoping it just starts to work at some point.

I loaded Tversity last night (want to try the video share from the CE vesion at some point) and got it to work - reads the files from my hard drive etc., however, seems extemely slow - not even worth having it being this slow. The menus on the HR20 for music/photos are really slow, bringing up photos are really bad. Music files did not seem as bad.
Did I set up something wrong, or another setting within Tversity to help speed things up, at least to the speed I have with WMP11. I disabled WMP11, but that didn't change anything. Seems like there might be a setting I have wrong. I followed the first post, etc - seems to read my folders/files on the HR20, just tooooo slow to even bother with it.
thanks..
I have Tversity set up and mp3's are not that bad but photos are painfully slow. For my setup photos are to slow to use. :) I may try WMP 11 to see if its faster.

For photos WMP is faster when building the gallery interface - it sends over uris for thumbnail images when a container is requested and TVersity sends over the uri for the full size image - this is when building the thumbnail 'gallery' view in MediaShare. When displaying full size image there should be no noticeable difference.
Also there was a subtle change made in how the gallery view is built so it appears to be faster overall in the new national release.
For music - there shouldn't be any issue with menu speed in either - WMP transcodes a limited number of formats however.
For video - WMP does not transcode video.

I tried it on a couple of different computers, and both HR20's are painfully slow on thumbnails. If I seem to limit the number of pictures, it is better, but would agree it really seems slow. It does work however.:(

so is there a setting in Tversity that will help the speed of photos, even the menus are slow. Do I need to download the lateste CE release when it is available again, and will this speed things up, or something else that can be done? Also, not sure if correct forum, If I force download the next CE release, I assume I will have video sharing capability if I have TVersity working? Are videos any faster than photos in TVersity? thanks.

The only setting for photos in TVersity is in the transcoder section. This allows you to set the maximum resolution for images. You can set it to 1920x1080 for the HR20. The HR20 national release that is being rolled out has some enhancements specifically in the area of the photos preview.
Also if you are interested primarily in photos and music - WMP's sharing service also works with HR20 and does a better job with photos.
Not sure I understand you videos question - videos currently do not have a thumbnail view - they are presented as a list.
There is a separate forum for the CE program located here:

I have Video_TS.IFO and VOBs in directories for my backed up DVDs. Will it run these MPEGs ? Typically a PC software player launches the Video_TS.IFO which runs all the VOB files....which are MPEG2.
Does this new National release video support work thru WMP11 or just thru Tversity ?
Thanks !!!

Sorry I missed your response -I am sure you already have an answer - but just in case:
I have never tried sharing an IFO so no clue. I have loaded up vob lists into both PLS and atom feeds and that worked (sortof - had to FFWD to get to the next vob). The ideal situation would be to do a vob merge - but be careful with file size. A typical standard movie usually comes in at 4-6 GB in size. I haven't seen any issues myself, but other folks have reported issues when the file is over 2 GB. I have started recently having issues with higher bitrate material.
The national release supports MPEG2-PS with Layer 2 audio - or MPEG2-TS. WMP does not transcode video so you have to encode to one of those formats - then I think it is safe to assume it will work.
I never did like the content structure WMP exposes so I quit using it long ago. And I believe ronenmiz from TVersity stated they are working on getting the custom menu stuff working with the Hr20 so I am looking forward to that.

Maybe a dumb question but how do you start and stop the music with TVersity? I know I can pause and then hit play but what do I do to get back to TV audio? Somehow I did it after hitting a lot of buttons.
TVersity was easy to setup compared to WMP. I am using it with Windows Media Center. Do I need either WMP or WMC running along with the TVersity server?
One last question - I choose XBOX as the device - will it also work under one of the HR20/21 choices?
Thanks for your help

You can just hit stop (■) or Exit to leave media sharing.
No - you can run TVersity by itself, and the "HR20 with WAV support" profile supports the most formats (like streaming audio, etc) with the national release going out now.

Yes, twonky does work on MAC. Click on network help in my signature and look for the title, MAC. It has information about Twonky and Eyeconnect. It is close to the bottom of the page of post number 1.

So It works fine with all my MPG2 files but for some reason it will not transcode any of my other files. It does if streaming to my Xbox360 but not the HR20.
The only thing I can think of is that it can encode to MPG2 for some reason. Anyone have any idea's? Some files are .wmv, some are DiVx, some are .mv4

My problem seems simple. I can see all of my videos from the HR20 and I can play many of them. (I'm sure the others aren't playing because I have to track down the right codecs.) The problem is that all of the ones that play are stretched to fill the screen. I can't get them to letterbox.
I've read all the posts I can find here and on the TVersity site about this. I've tried changing the MAX VIDEO settings in the transcode control panel to several different values. I've tried modifying the profiles.xml file per several posts, and those changes seem to just give me a very bad picture. Bad in the sense that it looks like the transcoding is very messed up.
My TVersity server is Dell 8300. I've set it to always transcode and to use the hardwire connection not wireless.
So far, only the original defauly values work. Any thoughts?

Yes I have the same problem as far as the HR20 goes. My PS3 seems to obey what tversity is set at. Anything going to my HR20 plays at the resolution of whatever channel I happen to be on, i.e. a if I am watching a 480i program, like C-SPAN2, then when I access Media Share videos, they too are 4x3 480i, no matter what the original resolution is.
I now have a horrible problem with both my HR20's on the latest CE.
Any podcast or mp3 that I play on them sounds like a 78 record slowed down to a 33 single. Just horrible.
I have no trouble on either my PS3 or XBOX 360 with the exact same feeds.
edit: Ok I set it for H20 with WAV support & now it plays are the right pitch. However, it will not stop or exit. I had to actually restart tversity to get it to stop.

I have to say this is frustrating. I have the vod working and it took a few hours to populate but from reading I knew this would be the case. the tversity sw is working and has an exception in windows firewall and is seen on my network as a upnp device but the hr20 cant see it and I am baffled. maybe the menu option will show up in the next few days. I have restarted my pc and hr20 several times and am not going to do that again for a few days.

i've tried all the various settings mentioned running tversity hardwired to my hr20-700.
my videos would play on the hr20, but were always pixelated.
my only resolution is to perform a software reset of the hr20...then my videos play fine (5-7 different clips), then the videos begin to pixelate again until i perform a software reset of the hr20 again.
probably no real resolution of this until they "fix" it in a future release...

I have to say, this is working beautifully, except for the stretching part. We're able to stream almost everything across the LAN to the HR20 without the problems others are reporting. This is with TVersity set to transcode all the time and the target device is set to HR20.
I have tried manually changing the profiles file as suggested elsewhere, but that just screwed everything up for me.
Any other thoughts? (Letterbox movies are being stretched to fill the screen.)

Actually - there people on the forum (myself included) who would be very curious how you are getting it to stretch
Can you post the type of video and the dimensions of the video and what your max resolution size in tversity is set to ?
Also what resolution is the HR20 set to (480i Stretch etc.) ?

Here's the deal: I'll tell you how to make it stretch and you tell me how to NOT make it stretch! :)
I think its Black Magic, but here goes.
On TVersity: General Tab: The only thing I've changed is media player target. I've tried xBox360, the three different HR20 options, and the default. NO DIFFERENCE.
On TVersity: Transcoder Tab:
- Always transcode
- MaxVideo is 1280x720
- Transcode for quality
- Wired 100 Mbps, excellent
- Minimum compression
- Decode as fast as possible
On the HR20-100S: Nothing I do makes a difference.
A sample video that plays properly on my computer but is stretched/cropped on the HR20 has the following info according to the DivX player:
- FOURCC: "DX50"
- 580x234
- 23.976 fps
The screen connected to the HR20 is a Panasonic 50" plasma.

Not sure what would happen - the AR on the clip is 2.48:1. Thats reasonably close to the wider widescreen (2.35:1). Now I would *expect* that TVersity would NOT resize it as it is well below the threshold of 1280x720 - I'll check it out tonight. Also I doubt the HR20 would put that out as native ??? My initial thought is TVersity is passing a 580x234 MPEG2 file to the HR20. The internal scaler on the HR20 is probably trying to hit 854x480 (1.77:1 AR) - which would explain the deformation.
I am pretty sure I know how to fix it to letterbox correctly from tversity without re-encoding - but let me double check to make sure I am right before I post it :) .

ok maybe some networking guru can explain and fix this. on my hr20 it shows an ip address of 192.168.1.102 . my dhcp clients table shows the same which I confirm by the hr20s mac address matching the display in my clients table listing. when I ping 102 from my computer all 4 packets time out. to my mind there is clearly a problem between my computer and the hr20. obviously everything is plugged into a router so its 100mbs ethernet all the way around. in tversity I have used the default 41952 port and opened a hole in my firewall for that. because my computer has 3 network interfaces and only one of them is ethernet [apparently firewire is considered to be a network interface] I used the specific address for my computer which is NOT dhcp [I need a constant setting for file sharing so it has a static address] so if the hr20 could see my network [it can and connects to the internet when the advanced test is run] it should also see the content on my hd. there HAS to be a network setting that I am missing here. now that I think of it, my laptop which I connect to the network wirelessly or hardwired can see all the shares on my desktop but my desktop cannot connect to my laptop. what would be the reason for this [I assume this is the real problem here] ? the workgroups names are the same. there is no password that I am aware on either computer so they should see each other. trouble shooting tips greatly appreciated. also to further baffle, there is a desktop directly across from mine physically that has a share that I can see on my computer. it doesnt make sense that some computers can be seen and others cant on the same network does it?
Network gurus can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe that the HR20 supports pings so not getting a ping back is not a bad thing. If you can download shows on demand then obviously your network connected.
I have been using media share for several months then all of a sudden the HR20 wouldn't recognize it. Today it came back without any changes on my part. Could Directv have a play in authorizing it??

As I suspected - TVersity does not resize the movie. It sends an MPEG2 file with the same dimensions (580x234) and the HR20 probably doesn't quite what to do with it.
I created a clip with the same dimensions as yours - without editing anything I saw what you were talking about - it stretched to fill the screen.
So to fix it - letterbox it before it leaves your PC.
1) Stop TVersity
2) Open the Video Decoder Configuration for FFDShow from your start menu
3) Place a check mark on 'Resize & aspect'
4) on the configuration screen that opens:
a) Click 'Specify aspect ratio' - select 16:9 (most likely for an hdtv)
b) Click 'Resize if ...' - then note the tiny buttons - click them to be '<'
c) A good setting currently is x < 854 or y < 480
d) Under Aspect Ratio - click 'Keep original aspect ratio'
5) Click Apply and OK
6) Start Sharing in TVersity
7) Play your clip - now you should see the screen width is filled and the height is letterboxed nicely.

Thank you for looking into that for me! Unfortunately, it didn't change a thing. I've checked it 3 times and rebooted.
Is it possible that I'm not really using FFDShow for decoding the video? In TVersity, under Transcoder settings I have unchecked the Windows Media box. It says that unchecking it will make you use FFDShow.
But when I look at the lower right section of the windows toolbar, it doesn't show the little red icon, just the blue one for audio decoding. It also shows the Divx icon. When I installed TVersity, I told FFDShow to decode everything but mp4 files ( I have CoreAVC for that.)
Could I have something mixed up there with the decoders?

I think you are exactly right - in the codecs section of FFDShow - for the Divx settings - make sure it is set to 'libavcodec'. If you are using the regular Divx libraries not sure if you can do any post-processing. At least I don't know how. Also I think you need to restart TVersity to pick up the changes.
The Windows media checkbox is supposed to be only for XBox and Windows media devices - shouldn't have any effect on the HR20 - can't hurt though :)

That makes perfect sense. Still doesn't work. I might have to uninstall Divx from that machine. I changed the setting as you suggested, applied it, hit ok, rebooted the machine, and when I play the movie, it still invokes the official Divx codec. FFDShow still shows the libavcodec for the 2 Divx entries.
Unless you have a different suggestion, I'll just uninstall Divx and see what happens.

Thats the quickest check - but you will probably lose your web player (for stage6, etc).
If it works that way there is a way to have both - just change filter merits.
Also - you may try playing twice - sometimes there is a delay when transcoding.

Can't get shoutcast internet radio links to work on HR20. Initially I had a white "x" by all the stations. Then I Set Tversity for HR20 with WAV (it was on automatically detect). Now the white "x' is gone, but the stations all read: "Ttp://[and the url]" I don't know where the initial "h" when. Needless to say, when I click a link it asks if I want the slideshow, goes to the video screen and then says it can't find the media. Any ideas. I also installed the Directshow w/ Shoutcast filter (not that I know if it did anything since I had the same problem before I installed it).

I've come to the conclusion that although the price is right, Tversity, as a whole, just isn't quite ready for prime time with respect to the HR20. It was simple enough to play .mp3's and stream audio to my Netgear MP101 and even play .mp3 and video through my PS3. But once I introduced it to the HR20, things became messing. It's not so much a function of Tversity as much as it is this crazy technical world we live in. Where we have multiple different format for music, video, DVD, etc. I digress. Try explaining to the misses how an HR20 networking function and Tversity are in beta stages right now.

Of course on a side note: I have also tried to explain why we need an antenna in the attic, why there is a pc connected to the tv and (my favorite by far) - and just why do we have all of these 'big a** ugly speakers' ?

Also - you may try playing twice - sometimes there is a delay when transcoding.
Sorry for the delay in responding. I just tried deleting the official Divx codec. FFDshow does not kick in and the movie does not play at all. As you recall, I did tell it to use the libavcodec for all Divx files. So what would prevent FFDshow from working in this case? Some other file association? Note that I only deleted the codec, not the player.
As for your wife, just rent Bridget Jones's Diary for Valentine's Day and watch it with her in front of those big honkin' speakers. She'll come around to your way of thinking. (Champagne and chocolate wouldn't hurt either.)

I have Tversity working with xbox for awhile and it works great. Only problem is the super loud Xbox fan and controlling my TV through a game controller.
I was reading through supported devices at the TVersity site today and was surprised to see the HR-20 on the TVersity list. I immediately ran downstairs to see if I could find Tversity files on my HR-20.
Unfortunately, I can't see any special menu option to go to photos/music/videos. Is TVersity support part of a national release or is it just in the latest CE?
If it is part of the national release, can someone please tell me how to navigate to my TVersity files? I would love to test TVersity on my DVR.

No, you don't need the latest CE to use Tversity. You do need to have your HR20 networked though. Didn't know if you had done that. If properly networked and tested, you should get a new menu item when you click 'menu' which states something like, "Music, Pictures and Sound". Make sure you actually select the "test network" function under the "network" menu item.

My HR-20 DVR is networked. I get all the video on demand stuff and download it no problem.
I guess I don't have the latest national release or something. No Music, Pictures and Sound option under menu or anywhere else.
I am currently running national release 0x1ea downloaded on 1/25

TVersity Sharing service is set to Automatically start sharing the media when the computer starts. I have also tried Auto-detect and HR-20 as playback devices - if that is what you mean.
One thought, since my router uses WEP security, wouldn't I need to enter my code somewhere into the HR-20 for it to connect to my computer?
I don't see anywhere in the HR-20 network setup to enter a wireless WEP security code.

No icons. Huh. Sounds like you might have the Codecs not properly installed. The icons show up in my taskbar fine. There's some converters out there, but they take so long to convert. Try a search for .avi to .mpg converter.

How would you recommend going about installing/reinstalling the codecs? I currently can not get any video to play on the HR21 and I have the ffd, DivX and the XVid codecs installed (though I may have muffed something up in the config) .

Sure, the type is Audio url and the url is:
http://www.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=9354&file=filename.pls
It works fine on my Netgear MP101 no issues. HR20 is another story. It worked once, but since I upgraded to Tvsersity v. 4 it hasn't worked since.
SteelersFan - I dropped back to 9.10.8a ( troubleshooting another issue I was having ) - anyway I tried your shoutcast url again. Still didn't work. The only thing I can think of - Ronen has said approx 10% of shoutcast streams will not work. The reason being that they have embedded metadata - I did a short capture of that stream and did not see anything - it looked like straight mp3 - but maybe there is something there. I wonder if they changed their stream format recently ?

There are several MPEG4 part 2 decoders that can be used - do you have XVid or 3ivx by any chance ?
What you can do is download gspot and see what filter combination your Directshow setup is using - that will tell you for sure.

Understood. No tempting fate.
I grabbed GSpot and ran it on my server. I then ran the offending video. Having never used GSpot, I guessed that we're interested in the upper right side info concerning the codec in use. It reports DX50 and Xvid.
Note that I have now completely removed all Dvix components. I have never knowingly installed xvid.
I also just now uninstalled the TVersity codec pack and I installed a newer stable version of ffdshow. The one that came with TVersity was from July of 2007. This one is from December.
Between each change, I tried the video and GSpot told me the same thing.
Is that the info you were looking for? What comes next?

Actually down at the bottom you will see a section called "Proposed Codec solutions..", and in that a column for MS A/V with buttons 1,2
Button 1 will populate results with 2 chains - 1 for video and 1 for audio
Button 2 is "Play" basically
This is a graph using the Divx codec :

I've been getting the same kind of errors with GSpot chains too lately. Yet when I open the video in any of my three video players, it plays perfect. The only way I got .avi video working on the HR20 was to change Tversity to the HR20 with WAV, and lowering the video resolution to 854 x 480. Keep in mind that there were still a few .avi's that didn't load after that even.
Also, I read something recently that said if I install ffdshow that I shouldn't allow Tversity to install their Codecs at all. Is this true anyone?

Sorry I am outta ideas then - I guess they just broke something in TVersity with the HR20 ? Or the other way around too - though I think it might be with TVersity - just the way those urls show up in the ui is a little strange.
I'm pulling my hair out reading how EASY this has been for some others.
I have installed TVersity. I have also installed the KLite codec pack. GSpot confirms that my codecs are all present and accounted for.
I can see all my files on the HR20. When I set TVersity for "XBox", I get X's on the HR20 for all files (XBox, X's, go figure). When I set TVersity for "DirecTV HR20 HD Receiver" AND uncheck the "use directshow" on the transcoder tab, I get the little camera icon. When I try to play a file, I get one frame from last week's State of the Union Address as broadcast on Fox News (still trying to figure that one out), then I get a message that says "Unable to access media."
AAARRGGHHHH!!! Any suggestions?

TVersity will install FFDShow from ffdshow tryouts. I don't know if it is a particular version or just a 'get latest' type thing. I do install TVersitys codec pack - but always unselect FFDShow (since I already have it anyway - and its configured how I like for letterboxing/pillarboxing, subtitles, etc.). I upgrade FFDShow periodically - first I export the settings from inside, then uninstall, grab a newer nightly build and install it - then reimport my settings.
The other 3 items it installs are an MP4 splitter, an FLV Splitter, and some other mpeg splitter (I think) - I let it lay those down. The 2 splitters are from GuliverKli (aka Gabest) and are probably the best for MP4 and FLV - the other one - who cares - never gets used as far as I know.

I understand that you don't want extra codec packs on your system when running Tversity. There's a program called Codec Sniper which helps remove some of them that are not removable via add/remove programs. Use caution though. Could mess up your system. Nonetheless, you should start with just Tversity and fffshow from what I understand.

Wouldn't worry about GSpots graphs - they do something pretty neat and it is very useful for constructing new graphs and troubleshooting but the MS A/V graph is the one Directshow is using.
So it says it is using the ffdshow filter - it may be set to not show up. In the ffdshow video decoder verify:
1) "Tray, Dialog & paths" - make sure the tray icons has a selection (usually "Modern")
2) "Directshow control" - slide the Merit slider all the way to High merit
3) Just double check codec settings (you never know)
4) And double check your resize settings - to get the letterboxing and pillarboxing
And that really should be all there is to it - when you play a 'ultrawide' divx file - you should get letterboxing

Is it a recording from Fox off-air by any chance ? If it is - Fox is 720p and currently Mediashare video playback is currently not working for anything beyond 'Enhanced Definition' (854x480) - it may not be a setup issue.

I reset the receiver still no menu item for photos, videos, pictures.
I am convinced the problem is because of my WEP security on my wireless network. The HR-20 doesn't see my computer because it is blocked.
Is there a place I can enter my WEP security code into the HR-20 so it can see my computer running TVersity?
With my Xbox, I had to enter my WEP code, I am sure the HR-20 must have a place to do the same.

Now the problem is when I enter my network information, I can't connect because the HR-20 does not ask for my WEP Security key.

Actually, if you are using a wireless bridge, it would be that device that would have the WEP information. The HR20 is a wired 10/100 device & thus is unaware of wireless settings of any type.

SpecialEd,
It doesn't make any sense that you are able to receive DOD, but not a media server. To receive DOD would mean that your router (or maybe your neighbors) is correctly operating. First, confirm that it is indeed your wireless router that the HR20 is using for DOD. Second make sure your server with Tversity on it has the correct firewall port open. Also, your wireless router needs to have the port open as well for Tversity to work. I believe I opened mine on my router with Port Forwarding. If you can stream Tversity to your XBox, you should also be able to stream it to your HR20.

I don't know about the HR21, but my HR20 automatically finds the Tversity server whenever I turn it on and logs off when I turn it off. My Tversity server is on a computer that I turn on and off every day so this has been thoroughly tested. Sometimes it does take the HR20 about 30 minutes to realize I shut off the Tversity run computer though. Eventually, a message appears on the screen which says the server is no longer available. Thus, the HR20 is continually checking the connection (at least once every 30 minutes or so).

To restate the current problem, if I sit in front of the server and play the AVI, it opens up WMP and loads the ffdshow audio and video codecs. The icons appear in the system tray. Everything is perfect. However, if try to play that same AVI over the HR20, TVersity does not invoke the ffdshow video decoder, only the audio decoder.

has anyone gotten the rss video feeds to show up on an hr20/21 as playable and had them work. I found a few last nite that are devoted to car enthusiasts and would like to try them. they are listed now in tiversity and when I click on the little 'play' button it invokes a browser that takes me to the website. however that is when I am at my pc and physically clicking the play button. shouldnt rss video feeds show up as an option to play on the hr20/21 or am I missing something. this would REALLY be a cool application of the software if it works. as an aside, I put these links in my regular rss reader, feedDemon, to see if they were valid and it works as it should giving me a brief description of the feed and a hyperlink.

Unfortunately, that is one thing that I have not been able to test fully, as the machine is a headless WHS box - my only access is thru remote desktop. The files do play on that tab via that connection, but there is no sound.

It doesn't make any sense that you are able to receive DOD, but not a media server.
I know, this is why this is driving me nuts.
To receive DOD would mean that your router (or maybe your neighbors) is correctly operating. First, confirm that it is indeed your wireless router that the HR20 is using for DOD.
Confirmed I am using my wireless connection.
Second make sure your server with Tversity on it has the correct firewall port open. Also, your wireless router needs to have the port open as well for Tversity to work. I believe I opened mine on my router with Port Forwarding.
I use Zone Alarm as my software firewall, there is no place to open ports it it. I did however enter the HR-20 as a "Trusted" IP. I also, turned my software firewall completely off to make sure it is not blocking anything.
The port 41952 is open on my linksys router, this needed to be done to get the Xbox to work. So router port is wide open.
If you can stream Tversity to your XBox, you should also be able to stream it to your HR20.
My thoughts exactly. Both the HR-20 and the Xbox use the same Buffalo wireless bridge, so I know that both units should be able to see and send data over the network.
I'm stumped on this one.

I use my laptop with tversity. The problem I am having is when I shut down my laptop the hr21 does not show the pictures and music under menu options which I would assume is normal, now when I restart my laptop and restart tversity the hr21 still will not show pictures and music under menu uptions unless I resart my hr21. Is there anyway to make it so I dont have to restart my hr21 every time i want to send music to my
hr21. Any help would be appreciated.
a way to speed it up after pc is logged on is to restart the tversity service, on admin page click advanced-restart. hr20 sees it in seconds after that.

Ok, one problem.
I installed Tversity with hr20-700. No problem playing pictures or audio. Now, I'm trying to play a WMV video file, made with Windows Movie Maker, and on the menu on the receiver, it shows up with the camera icon next to it. When I go to play it, it says cannot play media.
Any help?

1. Make sure you set Tversity to "Always Transcode" in the settings.
2. It's not uncommon for me to have to try playing an item twice before it will begin playing, so when you get that message, try playing it again right afterwards.

1. Yes, done.
2. Tried it multiple times... no go.
Still getting "Unable to access media".

But I cannot play WMV from Windows Movie Maker, whether I converted them to AVI or WMV... either ones won't play.

Nevermind, got it to work! Had to convert the WMV to AVI ... HR didn't recognize AVI until about 5 min. passed.
AVI it is.

Thanks for this, I didn't know that zone alarm could get port specific, I just had all ports open for TVersity I guess. Still does not work with HR-20 as expected since it doesn't work even if my software firewall is turned off.
Can someone that got TVersity to work with an HR-20 give me a step by step of what you did?
I suspect most got it working like I got TVersity working for Xbox. Installed TVersity and it worked.
Maybe I need to wait for another national upgrade and give it another go.

I've had great success with my HR-20 and TVersity. I have 2 questions.
* TVersity seem to be storing them in folders per the "modified" date and not the "taken" date. I can prove this because TVersity has a "taken" subfolder and it completely has the wrong date for each photo. It has the modified date for each one. In addition, I can't figure out why it doesn't play them in the same order as they are listed in the folders on the computer.
* Second question, is there a way to control videos by the D* remote besides pausing. ie. can you fast forward or rewind?

Not WMP playlists. You can use m3u, pls, rss, atom formats. TVersity does not have a playlist maker - you could use winamp, or an app for playlists like
Advanced Playlist Builder (http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Multimedia_and_Graphics/MPEG_Audio_Players_and_Editors/Advanced_Playlist_Builder.html)

I tried what you said. In fact, I unchecked all of those boxes and I believe it corrected the problem with sorting within the folders. However, the "taken" folder within TVersity is still incorrect....ie. The folder a picture is put in is still classified by the modified date.

Done and done. No improvement.

I had another thought on this - I think you originally said AVI, but I just re-read this and saw it again for the first time :) . I *think* (not 100% sure on this) - when you play AVI - it also has to be configured in the VFW (Video for Windows) configuration. You might check its codec settings also.

You would add the rss URL as a Video Feed - then it will show up in the TVersity menu system as Video>Internet Video>(name of feed). You may have to try playing it twice - the default setup for feeds is - show the first 10 entries, and download the first 2 'new' items to the data storage once daily.
Just as an example - the National Geographic shorts feed currently has 160 items. Only the first 10 will show up on TVersity, and of those only the first 2 will be automatically downloaded to the server. If I click the 3rd one there is a substantial delay - but luckily they are MP4 so they are streamable. That isn't true for flash video (like YouTube or Google Video) - so the first attempt will fail - but TVersity will download it - so if you wait a few minutes it will be completely downloaded and the next attempt will work.

I got my 0x1FE update last night for my HR21-700. Got the latest TVersity installed. MP3's and Photos always worked. prior to last night's firmware upgrade.
Results today w/ 0x1FE: Mp3s still work. Photos are "reversed" - upside down (?)
Video: now lets me see the folders I setup in TVersity, however most of my AVI files do NOT play - one DOES play however.
Tried looking at the difference, all are NEARLY identical:
Video Codec: XVID (ALL)
Audio Codec: AC3 (ALL)
Frames/second: 23 (ALL)
Video Data rate: All are similar
Video Resolution: All are around 640 x 480 (give or take)
The ONLY large difference I see when I look at all the file properties is that the one that WORKS is set to a audio bitrate of 192kbps - all the others are 448kbps... I wonder if that is it?

Could be - how are you decoding AC3/A52 ?
My server has the "AC3 Filter" software installed (ac3filter.net), which allowed my PC's media player to play AC3 encoded audio streams within the videos...
I assume TVersity is obviously transcoding this to something the HR21 understands, like MP3 encoding... because I doubt the HR21 natively understands AC3 audio.
I will try to re-encode these video files' audio to both MP3 192kbps AND also try AC3 192Kbps - however the latter is proving troubling (using VirtualDub) because it doesn't let me select an AC3 bitrate of any better than 48Khz, 0 channels, 79kbps... i can't seem to select 192Kbps anywhere...

I had no idea you had to kinda "force" tversity to download the feeds. Thanks! :)
Now, how does one go about forcing tversity to show the title that I have given it , instead of the file name (minus the extension)? It does not seem to matter if I select the HR20, specifically, or multiple devices (I have a 360 & a PS3) or if I force trancoding always or not.
On the pc running the tversity software, I only see the name that I give the content. On both my HR20's it always shows the actual file name.

Ok - the fact you see the OSD means it is using FFDShow - thats cool - I thought it wasn't. DAR is 'Display Aspect Ratio' - think of it in terms of anamorphic DVD - this is the resolution the playback device should show it - but it is not recorded at that resolution (thats the SAR 'Sample Aspect Ratio' or PAR 'Pixel Aspect Ratio').
Try this: I would do this in Media Player Classic if you have it - its much easier to resize and see the effect on the fly. On the Resize page of FFDShow - down at the bottom there is a slider for 'Overlay size' or similar. Slide that to '1.77:1' and select the radio button for no aspect correction. In MPC you should see it resize the letterboxing. Once you have it looking good in MPC just save those settings - delete temporary files from inside TVersity - and try replaying it - it should show up correctly on the HR20.

That gets a little hairy -
1) If it is an AVI container - you can tag it if it is under 2GB filesize using AVITagger - then remove the item from the library, in the settings area select Use AVI tags, restart sharing, then re-add the file to the library.
2) Any other containers or large AVI's - I would recommend adding the files using either the rss or atom format. I posted a short example recently:
http://www.dbstalk.com/showpost.php?p=1435719&postcount=11
What you will notice is rss has a "title" node and atom has a "title" attribute - this is read into the database and will get displayed when you query it.
Thanks

I got it! I don't want to touch it now for fear of that old black magic zapping it. But I believe it was simply because of a checkbox. At the top of the Resize dialog in ffdshow, there's a pulldown menu that says DEFAULT. Next to it is a checkbox that I don't think I had ever checked. It's marked "Process Whole Image." I ticked it and rebooted. Viola. Does that make sense?
I had tried the steps outlined in this MaximumPC article:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/streaming?page=0%2C0
I was getting the same results. Then I noticed that checkbox. FWIW, I currently have it setup as in the article, with CCCP, since it says to go that route if you're playing MKV files.
Thank you for all your help. If it doesn't make sense that the Process Whole Image box would make a difference, then I'm willing to experiment further to see what actually did it.

Congrats - make sure you export your settings in case you ever need to update :D
Actually yes - that makes perfect sense. There are some functions in FFDShow and DScaler in particular where you can 'process' half the screen. This is so you can see if your comb filter for example is really improving the picture. So I would guess ( purely a guess ) that there is a bug in ffdshow of some sort and the checkbox is 'forcing' it to work.
CCCP is a good one - its small and has the Haali splitter (in my opinion - the best for matroska and mp4 - but it is bad for avi :( ), AC3Filter, and ffdshow. I think that combination almost covers most common scenarios.

Now that AVIs are working (yay!), shouldn't that same solution work for everything else? I've grabbed some .MOV movie trailers from the Apple site. They play, but they stretch like the AVIs were stretching. (AVIs are still working properly.)
I'm using the CCCP set up, with all codecs in FFdshow set to the libavcodec.
Also, I own the CoreAVC codec but I do not have it enabled. You said that using it would circumvent FFdshow and thus rule out the post processing we're after?

Is there a primer or how-to for getting TVersity to show up as a Computer option in Media Share (Music, Photos and More). I have Tversity installed on my server PC and running over my wireless network. I can get to TVersity from other computers and even from my Wii (by browser). But I can't get it to show up in the HR21-700. I DID get the HR21 to find WMP from my laptop, but that it useless to me, because a) none of my media files are on the laptop b) I dont wanna have to boot the laptop to use Mediashare c) WMP stinks-- I have 'X's by my some test videos and they dont play-- I want Tversity to serve my HR21. I've restarted sharing a few times, rebooted the pc, even restarted the HR21-- nothing. I've set Tversity to share to all devices, share to HR20 (all 3 menu options there). Also, my HR21 passes all the network tests. I have UPNP enabled. I'm using a WRT54G modded as a bridge with DD-WRT. But for now the HR21 only sees the laptop using WMP :(

Gotcha. The Indiana Jones trailer in HD. So I'm guessing it's H264.

If I got the same one - I grabbed the 720p version (161MB)

So it is 1280x544 - My guess is this does not go over your letterbox limits ?
Here is the catch -
You can set it up resize limits 1280x720 and it will work
Then you have to setup TVersity to 'downconvert' it to 854x480 - the HR2x will choke on the higher resolution

Itzme,
The first thing to do is reboot the HR21, once you're certain TVersity is visible on the network. If the HR21 doesn't see it, then you won't get the option.

SO what am I missing here, I downloaded the same video but it just won't play on my HR20. It looks as if Tiversity is transcoding it as I see the transcoded video in the "data" folder but it just won't play. When I select it the screen goes blank for about 2-3 minutes and then says it can't access the file.
Any suggestions?
IU can play it on the local machine so I know the codecs are installed...

It is a 720p clip ( if you grabbed the same one ) - the HR20 can't handle 720 for some reason so make sure your max video is 854x480. Tversity will down-rez it for you.

Tried that, still same issue!
I downloaded and installed Tversity. Setting it up was easy and seems to work much better than WMP11.
Photos, music, and videos seem to work well except that I cannot get the aspect ratio to work with videos. Everything is stretched to fit the screen even though most are 4:3. Are there any settings I can set to make it match the OAR of the video?
Thanks.

Read through the posts, but wasn't able to really figure out what changes I should make. Also, to be clear, my problem is that the video is being stretched side to side (should have pillar boxes, but don't) not losing the letterbox on movies. From your postings it sounded like you were missing the letterbox.
Any suggestions?

It works for both Pillar and Letter boxing.
Here are the settings godzilla and I worked out between us (at least my take on them :) ). I am running for the most part XVid and podcasts. Obviously doesn't work for HD clips so you can adjust as needed.

Sorry if this is a repost. I have read through all 10 pages of this thread and still am a little confused. I have a wired HR20-100 using TVersity, and I am succussful in viewing Photos and listening to music (although lately I get a stalled connection with the message regarding server communication, but this still works as I can still view and listen after the message disappears). My issue is in regards to viewing videos.
TVersity recognizes my video files (AVI), with some being DIVX and some being XVID. I am able to see the list of files, with a white X to the left of the file name and I am not able to play the file. What steps or settings am I missing that is preventing me from viewing these files? I just downloaded and installed TVersity and the included codecs on 02/16/08 if that makes any difference.

Are you set-up in TVersity with the HR-20 as your device?

I have the setup device as XBox360 (according to the original instructions). I was curious about this myself, as the HR20 devices are now listed (but which HR20 selection to make out of the 3)?

You can ignore the XBox360 - that was when there was not an HR20 profile at all. HR20 with WAV is probably the most compatible. If the HR20 is the only device on your network you can set it as the profile. If you have other devices there are some extra steps.

Got it up and working by switching to DirecTV HR 20 with WAV. So now I got music, photos, and videos!
For some reason though, when I access my 'shared' media via the HR20's menu, I initially get a stalled response and an error message saying that it was unable to access media, but then I'm able to access the media immediately afterwards. Is this some kind of glitch or bug?

Happens to me constantly.
I even get this a lot for my pictures.
I suspect directv has their timeout period set way too low.
Just get used to that and learn to restart any file when you get that message.
Granted, I only have a 2.4Ghz laptop on a 54 Mbps wireless connection, but you'd think they'd allow enough time for that mediocre setup to respond.
Maybe DirecTV isn't taking into account the fact that 3rd party softwares like TVersity have to do transcoding for everything, which adds a bit more time to the process.

To use the 'AutoDetect' feature so that the correct profile is selected for the HR20 - you have to edit the profiles.xml.
If you get XMLNotepad 2007 this is a little easier to do and I'll write this out with that in mind.
XML Notepad 2007 from MS (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=72d6aa49-787d-4118-ba5f-4f30fe913628&displaylang=en)
1) Stop sharing in TVersity
2) Open the profiles.xml file from the tversity directory (default is "C:\Program Files\TVersity\Media Server\")
3) Locate the plain HR20 (no WAV, no MP3) entry (about the 13th entry) - you can just do a find on the word JetHead
4) You will see a node named "HTTPHeader" with a plus sign beside the folder
5) If you expand the folder - you will see an attribute named "inUASubstr"
6) Right Click on the red inUASubstr attribute and select 'Cut'
7) Go back up 2 profiles to 'DirecTV HR20 HD Receive with WAV' and expand it
8) You will see the same HTTPHeader node - right click on it and select Paste
9) Now you should have HR20 with WAV has the detection string on it and the normal HR20 does not.
10) Just save it and close. Then in TVersity select the Auto profile and start sharing. Now all of your supported devices should get the correct profile when connecting to TVersity.

Wonder how it works with the Viiv server ? It also transcodes but I can't say I have ever seen anyone complain about it timing out.
Hi. I didn't want to bog down this thread with my specific TVersity issue (HR21 isn't finding it), so I posted my situation yesterday over at TVersity - Diversifying Television Forum Index -> DirecTV HR20 (http://forums.tversity.com/viewtopic.php?t=9774)
As I read your posts, I see some real experts here and I hope some of you may click over there and help me. My problem may be more of a newtwork, but I'd appreciate anyone who think they can help. Especially anyone whose HR2x is using a Linksys router as a bridge with Firmware DD-WRT v23 SP1 Final (05/16/06) micro. THANKS!

I think double posting is generally frowned on - you could always IM him with a link to your post. The mods may be able to move it - I really don't know.

1) Does it play in either windows media player or media player classic ?
If not you may have codec issues.
2) Does it play in the Tversity UI ?
If it plays in either of the Media Players and not in TVersity but other formats do play in the UI - I would look at the transcoder settings - reduce bitrate for network, etc.

I have set things up like you posted and still have the same problem. All videos are stretched the full width of the screen.
The only thing is, I don't have exactly the same options as you. I am missing a couple of options such as: "Process pixel aspect ration internally" and under Aspect Ration, it says "Keep original aspect ratio" only and does not have "1.76:1"
Thanks.

Sounds like a different version of ffdshow ? You might try uninstalling the version you have and grab the CCCP codec pack - it has a stable version from ffdshow-tryouts and it seems to work quite well for most people.

Ok, setup Tversity tonight and both the HR-20's see it.
My movies show up with the little camcorder icon next to them but attempting to play them yields no results. It looks as if it tries to play them, but just sits there. It might pop up showing my movie as 31 or 39min, but nothing plays.
The files are mpeg4 h.264 w/ AAC audio (160k)
They play fine in MPC and WMP (Haali splitter, ffdshow audio and ffdshow audio all appear on the taskbar when playing). In the flash Tversity player it plays but no audio and if I play from the Tversity web browser, WMP will play the video but no audio there either. The ffdshow video icon will appear but not the splitter or audio icon.
Anything I might be overlooking here?
