Well, I just switched from D* to Dish yesterday. I've seen D* HD before at my brother's house, but wasn't too impressed (more compression artifacts, softer image, etc). But when I saw Dish HD, I was sold. I am very pleased with the picture quality so far. SD looks about the same as D*, though I've noticed that my local SD channels look a little better on Dish than they did on my D* TiVo box.

I don't have any experience with the D* HD DVR, but from what little I've used of the ViP-622, I'm very impressed. It is so easy to program.

I don't regret the switch at all.

You are asking this question in the Dish section of the forum so the obvious answer is that we like Dish and the programming offerings they have. I would suggest you jump over to the VIP622 Support forum and just do some reading. I think you will find that it is an excellent HD DVR and hopefully in the next 6 months it will even allow use of External USB hard drives for more unlimited archiving of shows. There are obviously still a lot of channels that we would all like to see move from SD to HD. The current offering that Dish has is a good start and better than what most of the others have.

I'm in athe same boat, I'm currently a D* user with an older Samsung Tivo unit and looking at getting an HD unit. Right now the HR20 unit from D* is scaring the hell out of me, the Samsung Tivo unit has been flawless in 2+ years of service, no lockups or missed recordings. Price is also a consideration, HD, locals and DVR fees we don't want to spend $70 puss a month. Righ now Dish looks really good with their new promos starting in Feb, 622 with no upfront costs and $50 a month for 10 months then $70. Not bad at all.

I to am in the same boat. I have been with D* for the last 5 years and still have the old rca receivers i got at best buy. I have never had dvr though really want it. I also have recently bought a hdtv. I am very interested in Dish especially with the 622 offer next month. The two things keeping me from jumping are my wifes obsession with xm and the new sats d* is putting up with the new channels. If I knew E* would pick up the same channels when they come out later this year Id be all over it. As of now I am kinda stuck playing the waiting game to see how things wash out

I was a Dtv subscriber for six years, but I am very glad I switched to Dish last August.

I loved the circa 2000 Dtv receivers (remotes and menus) and was hoping to upgrade to DVR service. I waited for DTV's non-Tivo DVR for 6-7 months of delays only find widespread dissatisfaction with it.

One reason I was waiting was the hope that recordings in 1 room could be viewed in another. I had been using VCR tapes for my favorite shows, and often viewed them from my work-out room or office in addition to bedroom.

DISH's 625 VCR's could only play recordings in 2 rooms, but I am 100% happy with them. I can't imagine living without DVR's ever again. (or the 30 second skip, and rewind on live TV)

The only issue I had was noise from the DVR in my office when the fan kicked in. I bought a laptop cooler to set under it (plugs into a usb port on the reicever) and it's quiet fans are not noticeable. The cooler also keeps the internal temps down < 100. High temps could be a major cause for defects in both DTV and DISH DVR's
