I went out and spent the money on a new samsumg lcd, got home and couldnt wait to get hd upgrade. Called direc tv and they gave me a nice deal for being a alleged "a" list customer. Said someone would contact me within 72 hours...That didnt happen. Called a week later, expressed my concern to the csr and she apologized and assured me a supervisor would contact me within 72 hours...That didnt happen. Called back and they gave me some comps and then gave me the number to the local (northern suburbs of chicago area) install company. I finally got a hold of them and they gave me a date of march 6th. I was shocked. My first call to direc tv was 12/23/06 and now i have a install date for a hr20 and new dish of march. To make matters worse i look at a circuit city ad and see them advertising guaranteed install of direc tv by the superbowl. Do they use 2 different companies??? I need this hd upgrade sooner than later. Im tired of having this new tv hooked up with s video. March install is just plain ridiculous. Im tired of the free comps. I just want the service i pay 100.00 a month for on time.

Pull up your account online and look for an install date sooner. My install date was like 14 days out, I found one 4-5 days away online.

I've tried that and keep getting an error, call customer service. Wont let me view the install schedule.

My guess is that if you live in Chicagoland, you have some options for getting HD content. If your LCD has a tuner, you may be able to get HD content OTA. Cable and Dish Network may also be options.

I'd check the telephone directory for authorized satellite dealers and see if there isn't someone with a better deal than you're getting direct from DirecTV.

Install dates are pretty dependent on your local area and install companies. If you can find out the company that will be doing the install, give them a call yourself and see if you can get one earlier.

In the meantime, if they can't get you earlier, does your new HDTV had an internal OTA tuner? Most likely it does. Get an antenna and see if you can get any stations. That might at least get you through the Super Bowl.

Have you been charged anything yet by DirecTv for the upgrade? I would go to Circuit City and ask them about their guarantee time frame. If it sounds like they use their own install company and they actually CAN guarantee you're hooked up by the SuperBowl, can you afford to just get it from CC? You may also be able to get some money/credits from D* for part of the cost - especially if they were going to do better than the cost at CC.

It could also be the SB guarantee is just a marketing ploy (used nationwide by CC even) and that they use the same installers that result in the March install date. And if CC actually has the HR20s in stock, that's an advantage for you, too, as some of the install delays are a result of the installers not having the equipment available.

Just a couple of thoughts.

I went out and spent the money on a new samsumg lcd...You, and a bazillion other people. Due to HUGE sales of HDTVs, most
MCVPs are overwhelmed with last-minute requests for HD installs.

I ordered my Super Bowl HD install in September.... 2004, in plenty of time for the big game. :p

Get in line.

try putting up an antenna, depending on your zip you might even get away with an indoor antenna, post your zip and maybe someone can help

Yep, try antennaweb.org and see if you can get anything with a simple OTA antenna, if you can pull anything in you'll want it even after you have your HD LIL via SAT anyway so you can record more network programs at once. Good Luck because watching football in SD is no longer an option for me and I'm sure you'll agree once you get it hooked up!

Thanks for the advice, i called direc tv to express my concern and they gave me an additional 100.00 credit to my bill. I think im going to take that and look into getting basic cable with a high def package for a couple months...Just need to figure out how they would hook that up. im about 50 miles north of chicago and can only use an indoor antenna. I dont know if they make one that strong at a reasonable price.

Are you closer to Milwaukee being 50 miles north of Chitown? You probably get signals from both cities. You might be able to get away with a decent sized Silver Sensor. Buy one and try it out. If it doesn't work return it. :)

Here's the fine print on that offer:

Offer requires Professional Installation by a Circuit City installer. Offer valid on in-store purchases of in stock items. Must accept first installation time and must be present when installation occurs. Limited delivery and installation area subject to inclement weather. Installation location must be within 25 miles of a participating Circuit City store. Receive a $50 gift card if installation not made before the big game.

So it looks like you probably get Fire Dog installing your D* and they can guarantee it only if they have the equipment in stock. So since they're operating outside of D* they can guarantee different time frames than D*.

Hi Terrymaz, welcome!
I live in the Chicago area and there a lot of dealer/sub contractors for Direct and Dish. March install is nuts!!! Dish had a big promo going last year and I called to get a Dish VIP622 up grade, just to make sure I could get the promo and I was surprised to find out I only had to wait a week. Ask Direct if they want to keep you as customer!.
All the Stations in Chicago have digital channels now! Get an antenna. John
