View Full Version : HR-20/700 & HDMI Problem
I have had an HR-200/700 for almost 2 weeks working with a Samsung Plasma. I had a few setup problems with HDMI at the beginning but were solved thanks to the valuable suggestions on this forum. I also have it hooked up via component cables as well.
Last night, I turned my TV on and got the message "No Signal" from both HDMI and Component. After almost an hour of frustration and rebooting, I figured out that the problem is the HDMI. When connected all connections (HDMI, Component) do not see a signal. When I unplug the HDMI cable then the Component connect works fine.
Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

Some Samsung TVs will not accept a 480i signal.
Make sure you do not have 480i enabled on the HR20.
Also, evidently your model shuts off the component input when HDMI is connected.

How can you disable 480i? I go through the different resolutions on my HR-20/700 until the Samsung can show the right one. I'm aware of this problem. When Samsung cannot show a resolution it gives the message "No supported Mode".
This error is different, it says "No Signal" and strangely it even disables the Component connection. A few days ago, I had the HDMI and Component working concurrently as I had the Component as a backup in case the HDMI started acting weird.

Funny. I had HDMI issues when I first got mine, so I went to component. Wanting to use the component cables for something else, I went back just last night and hooked up the hdmi (to dvi on my TV, no hdmi input). They worked concurrently for about 2 hours (we even spent a little time discussing which picture looked better). Later that night, the hdmi went to No Signal and never came back. Component setup is still OK. Weird.

I don't know if it is just my hdmi cable or if they are all this way (or maybe it's the input.), but my hdmi cable does not fit tightly in the inputs. To my TV or the HR20. At one time I was getting "no signal" at the hdmi port and it had come loose when I was adding another cable elsewhere. I was beginning to panic when my daughter said "Isn't that cable supposed to be connected to something?". Anytime I have I do any changing I have to make sure the hdmi cable has not pulled loose.

I have a similar problem with my HDMI connection on the back of the HR20 - it is VERY sensitive to movement and will lose the signal if wiggled the wrong way. Others have reported on the same problem with the loose fit and suggested monoprice.com's HDMI port saver cable as an option.

I bought one but haven't installed it as of yet.

paulman182, nice tip on the Samsung specific issue! I have a Samsung HC-R4755W and once I unchecked 480i from the allowed resolutions on my HR20, the HDMI to DVI worked fine on SD channels. I was really happy because my entire family agreed that the HDMI connected pic looked better on our particular TV over the component setup (I know this isnt always true on all TVs).

How do you disable or uncheck a resulotion on an HR-20? I've only had my HR-20 for a little less than 2 weeks and have not figured out everything yet.

I found that the HR20 will not output hdmi at all if it does not " see " a device hooked to it at power on. When I installed a vizio lcd I just plugged it in to a running hr20 and got no signal from the hdmi (was using component from a prior set) I had to literally unplug the hr20 and when it started up it saw the hdmi tv and the port was active.... maybe your set was unpowered after a storm or something and the unit did not see it in time on a reboot so it killed the port... or maybe the whole thing is reversed where the tv has to sniff the signal at boot and if not it kills it....
just a thought....

The HDCP protocol is supposed to be able to bidirectionally detect and negotiate the connection. However, I believe that the HR20 does not go to the proper state if it does not detect and successfully negotiate the HDCP connection when coming out of standby. I've documented this in posts regarding HDMI compatibility with my Sharp LCD panel for the last several releases.
Check out the Digital Content Protection LLC (http://www.digital-cp.com/home) home page for the HDCP specifications which show the state machines for how devices should progress through various states of negotiation and retries.

For what it's worth, my HR20 has worked fine via HDMI on a Sanyo HDTV and is now working fine via HDMI to-DVI cable on a Samsung Widescreen computer monitor.

Mine is sequence related so in some cases it will work fine, in others not. See my post here. (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=764015#post764015)

One of my client's has an HR20 connected with a gefen fiber optic DVI cable to a late model Sony Plasma tv. About 50'. It has been fine for several months. As it should be with Fiber Optic. He went on vacation, when he first tried the sat upon return it was full of static, but he could still see the program material. Considering the system has been fine for months I am suspicious of the HR20. Has anyone had any problems with HDMI working for a period and then deteriating? I am going to bring out another receiver to check out the problem, but any heads up would be appreciated.
Thanks Dallas
