With Center-Ice, I record a lot of the east-coast games that I miss due to the 4pm pacific starts but I don't want the DVR to record the entire 6-7hr program as the games run about 2.5hrs followed by a good 4hrs of the D* splash screen. I tried setting that timer in the record menu to "start on time" and end it after "3hrs" but it keeps going on to record the full length of the programing. Am I doing it right ?

What brand/model DVR do you have?
Perhaps a simple "manual recording" with the desired channel and start/stop time would work better.

If you've got the space available on your DVR, you might want to let it just record the whole window -- at least that way, you don't need to worry about padding when a game runs over the expected length. (I agree that 6 hours is overly conservative, except for possibly NHL playoff games ;) ).
Otherwise, I agree with litzdog911's advice about using manual recordings.

I have the R15. How do I do a manual record?

I think the "end it after 3 hours" part is what is tripping you up. Anything under the "end" or "stop" part of the setting is how much beyond the normal stop time do you want to keep recording. So instead of the 6 or 7 hours regular time frame, you are setting it for 9 to 10 hours.
The only way to record a shorter time frame than the program is scheduled for is to do a manual recording. Sorry, I'm at work now (don't tell my boss! :)), and can't remember all the menu options you have to hit.

Anyone else familiar with manual recording?
