View Full Version : number wearing off remote?

I'm not quite sure if this is the right place for this - moderators feel free to move if necessary -- but given the RC24 is the standard remote for the HR20: Is anyone else noticing that the numbers and writing are starting to wear off of some of the buttons?
I assume this is a warranty item, I guess I just need to call D* and get a replacement. I'm just curious if mine is a "one-off" or if others have seen this happening too. I've had the unit since early september '06.

You can exchange it, but it will happen again, might as well get used to it. I had 2 DirecTivos before I purchased my 2 HR-20's and the numbers wore off both remotes on the DirecTivos.

A conundrum: If one uses a remote control enough to wear off the numbers, what does one need the numbers for? :D

I was worried about this. The numbers on our Directivo "peanut" would wear off very quickly. I was worried about it with the HR20 too, but ours is holding up very well. We've had it for over 3 months now and we watch a lot of tv. I would bet that this is not a warranty item as you mention. I just can't see them replacing remotes just because the numbers wore off (but it would be sweet if they did).
I just don't get why manufacturers do this. Why not put them under the button instead of right on it?

Just buy a universal remote! You should anyways... to get rid of your other remotes.

I like my many remotes! The closest I come to a Universal remote is the TiVo remote with the 1-2 switch!
On most remotes they're just painted on. On a few they are actually molded in a contrasting color, but paint is cheaper.

No offense to anybody, but please tell me people aren't seriously thinking that D* should send them a new remote because the numbers wore off of them??? Do people go after Sony or JVC for a new remote because the numbers wore off of their VCR or DVD player remote? When did a remote become a warranty item? And if its an issue of the numbers wearing off, I think its safe to say that the warranty period has ended long ago.
Maybe I really got up on the wrong side of the bed today, but this "gimme, gimme" stuff has been getting out of hand. "I called D* to upgrade to an HR20, but they would only give me $100 off and they wouldn't budge off of that. I think I might need to take my ten-years-at-$100-a-month-account and go somewhere else". Good - see ya! Try going into Best Buy and explaining that you've been coming there and buying CDs every week for ten years, so you feel you're entitled to new CD player for your stereo system for free. If I was one of the higher ups at D*, I would seriously be looking at all the money going out the door as well. Compensation for no-call-no-shows (and situations like that) is one thing, but where did the "entitlement" thing kick in? I've been going to the same grocery store for 20 years, but I have no sense about me whatsoever that I would go in there some day and demand some free groceries simply because I've spent a lot of money there. Have I gotten some freebies from D* in the 11+ years I've been with them? Certainly, but those were either offers that were publicized and offered to just about everyone (DVR4ME), or they were something that D* offered me on their own (billing credits, free premiums for 3 months, etc.). While I appreciated them and they made me feel good as a long-time customer, I did not feel that I was entilted to them simply because I was a long-time customer. I need a glass of Orange Juice! :)
I think it was said pretty well that if your remote gets to the point that the numbers are wearing off, you should have a good idea of where/what they are.

Hey - I appreciate a good rant and am glad I gave you some grist for your axe-grinding wheel. :)
But - IMHO a remote control that is only 3-4 months old shouldn't have the numbers wear off, that to me is a design flaw. The only way for a design flaw to be fixed is for D* to demand better construction from whomever they contracted with to build the remote controls. The only reason for them to demand better is if they are getting returns that cost them money from their end consumers.
So . . . Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (and put it in my Adam Smith-ian invisible hand)

I only know it you ever need to buy a remote you can't beat DirecTV for price. They
even include the shipping cost in the price. But it does not hurt to call them and ask
for one too!I do believe under the lease plan they will replace it once.:)
