View Full Version : Audio garbled - but with a twist

Setup: Mitsusbishi Diamond 65831 Set // Dish vip622 // Denon Receiver. Connected from DVR to TV via HDMI and also digital (Optical) to the Denon Surround sound box.
The whole setup is exactly a week old today, FWIW.
We've been on Dish network for years, using Standard Def and never had PQ or audio problems ... but now they are abundant!
Every ten minutes or so, while watching OR recording, the audio will stutter badly. Rewinding ten seconds and replaying it reveals the same sound every time. I suspected a bad hard drive and called Support.
Until I called Dish, the video was not affected at all. They give me the standard answer, requesting a cold reboot of the DVR. So I did that and they say to call back if the problem recurs. Now what?
-you guessed it --
Not only have the audio problems gotten worse, but now the video is affected too. :nono2: No matter how many times you rewind and playback a scene, the audio & video are scrambled. Then it may play again for fifteen more minutes without an issue at all.
The prob affects BOTH the sound on the TV when it's on (HDMI) and also the surround sound unit (optical) so I'm sure it is not a cable issue.
Thoughts/suggestions welcome.

Here is what I have done...............use your digital camera and take some photos of the audio problems. Email those phots to dishquality@echostar.com and ceo@echostar.com Explain to them in your email how you have contacted customer service and have not received any helpful info. Maybe you can get a replacement reciever if the hard drive is the problem.

:welcome_s Paul.
You might have a bad box. Is this on all programs or just a particular channel or channels.
Are you seeing it on Discovery HD? Reason I ask is that channel seems pretty solid in terms of content and the HD locals seem more problematic.
As for frequency? How often? everything you watch or a particular show?
Just a few questions to try an narrow down what exactly you are seeing.

It happens on all channels .. and both live TV and recorded shows. Frequency? Every 10 minutes or so.. It's pretty frequent.
Yep it does indeed, happen more on local channels, but the channels listed as HD in the program guide, certainly DO have the stuttering too. As for Discovery HD, that's a guess...I'd have to watch some of it and get back to you. I know that I have watched some shows on DHD but I'd be lying if I knew for SURE that it happens on that channel too.
And thanks for the welcome! This forum is easy for me to navigate; it looks to be the same software that drives the other one that I spend a WHOLE lot of time on, the Corvette Forum dot com.
Can you fill me in on a secret? How can I tell if what I am currently viewing on the TV is actually in HD? The Mits Television reports 1080i no matter what I am watching :nono2: and never differentiates ... unless I specifically set the Dish box to 780p. Is that normal?

As far as HD channels, for the most part the HD National channels are in the 9000 range and the HD Local channels are in the 6000 range. OTA channels will be their normal channel numbers, and will have a tan'ish color in the guide.
As far as the content on these and whether or not it's actually HD, you need to watch the picture quality and/or the aspect ratio. For the local stations typically their primetime broadcasts and most sports is HD. Some local stations broadcast their local news in HD as well. However, most of the syndicated programming is still SD being brodcast on their digital signal.
