Hey all.

I thought I posted this from my cell phone, but it doesn't look like it took. So I apologize if this is a duplicate.

I have a DTV satellite with a tripod that I got for tailgating at the Gator football games next season (GO GATORS!!!). Anyway, I was considering painting over the old battleship gray satellite and painting the Florida Gator logo on there ( :) ). Is there anything that I could paint or stick on to the dish part of the satellite that would impede my reception?

Thanks in advance!

Yep. You would want to use RADAR reflective paint [over absorbing] This would start getting into "Stealth Stuff" but coating due effect how the dish works.

How about something like this (http://www.redelephants.com/Dishrags.html)? Might be better than painting.

Try doing a search for "dish painting" or "painting" or something like that. Several threads on the subject in the past, and they have good info about using flat versus any kind of gloss paint, etc. Night get what you need there.

Don't use anything too glossy, and make sure you remove the LNB before you do it. If you want the LNB to match, you can paint it, but you have to be VERY careful. The white plastic part can't have ANY paint on it at all. Probably cover it with some tape or something.

That DishRags thing is pretty cool.

I agree the dishrag is cool and for $23 a bargin. No worrying about painting, no mess no demisinished performance. I wish I was a Gator fan I would buy one myself.

After getting my AU dishrag, I noticed that I was losing signal really quickly during rainstorms. On a clear day, with the dishrag dry, I compared signallevels with and without it on the dish. Without the dishrag, I was getting 96. With it, 63. The dishrag is now a seat cover on my mower. :D

I'd still have to say that it wouldn't hurt to use the dishrag for tailgating purposes, as you normally do that on a clear day. I just wouldn't use it on your main dish at your house.

Water kills the SAT signal, so a wet rag covering the dish will....

That's why I did my comparison when it was DRY. Even without a dishrag, you will lose the signal much quicker in a rainstorm if your dish is peaked (when dry) at 63 percent as compared to 96.

The dishrags aren't advertised as something that you need to take down before it starts to rain. They say it doesn't affect the sat signal. Just merely pointing out that I tested this thing and those claims are false.

Like so many other "claims" [from the marketing department]. In the real world they turn out to be BS.:)

They even specifically say to leave it on while it rains so it "cleans" it.
Anybody use those Dish Skinz http://www.dishskinz.com/ Wondering how those work. Unfortunately, I checked, and they don't have a Gators one. They do custom ones, but I imagine you have to buy in bulk for that.

I'd be willing to try one of those when they come out with NCAA teams.

My next door neighbor stuck a big #24 (Jeff Gordon) decal on his dish and he claims it doesn't affect his signal. I haven't gotten the time to check out his signal levels, so I can't confirm it for sure. Maybe I'll find a big AU decal somewhere and try it out as I have an unlimited supply of dishes around here and can just change it out if it screws it up. :D

This makes sense to me as plastic doesn't absorb water & basically is transparent to SAT signals. The covers over dishes [snow] or radomes for aircraft are made of similar materials.

I can't believe you let a Gordon fan live in Alabama.;)

I painted my dish with Behr (Home Depot) outdoor paint. Its the same paint that is on my garage doors. Semi-gloss I think.

Believe me, he hears it from me all the time about it. :D
Now that I think about it, his dish is in his front yard, so I'm surprised no one has painted a big number 8 over it.
