View Full Version : Maybe the people who are not having issues should list their set up?

Just a thought and not sure if it has been done. Seems that it is always asked of people having problems to list their setup...maybe the opposite should happen? Since I have never had a show not record or got a partial record, I would be glad to contribute if it was beneficial.

HR20 running 10b software
Component out to Onkyo TX-SR777 receiver - feeding component out to Infocus In76
Digital audio out to Onkyo receiver

Also svideo output to RF modulator - feeds into house coax, received by a 32" Toshiba SD TV and an 27" RCA SD TV
L/R RCA audio out to RF Modulator

My issues:
1. My onscreen caller ID hasn'tworked since upgrading to 10b (don't really care)
2. left side of the screen is off to the left of the display area on the 4:3 TVs, I still get a full screen image, it's just missing the left 10% or so. The projector is getting the proper screen, not sure if its the receiver causing the issue or the RF Modulator - but it wasn't an issue before the 10b upgrade
3. History lists all upcoming recordings as cancelled, but they still appear in the To Do list, and do in fact record properly
4. Bright/White screens cause the TVs to flip. It's just for a second, and only on the 4:3s. This too could be the fault of the RF Modulator, but wasn't an issue until the 10b upgrade.

Issue: One RBR. And that was after I had programmed several recordings and turned it off. In the morning it was locked up.

Setup:

Powered WB616 Multiswitch hooked to AT9
Approx 20' from dish to multiswitch - Belden 1829A (CCS) cable with SNS fittings
Approx 100' from MS to receiver - Belden 1829A (CCS) cable with SNS fittings
Outputs to Denon 2805 via component and optical
No MPEG-4 content - only MPEG-2 & OTA
Used to record a couple of shows to watch at bedtime
UPS

The Belden 1829A is a Copper Coated Steel coax and not the all-copper like D* recommends. I bolded the MS because I think a lot of my stability comes from having a powered multiswitch. I personally installed every inch of the cable, so I know it is done correctly.

- HR20 w/119 Firmware. It has performed flawlessly.
- 3-LNB Dish. (HD Locals are not yet available in the Rochester NY DMA)
- Toshiba TheatreWide TW65x81 65" CRT-based 1080i RPTV connected to HR20 via Component Video. (The set is 6 years old and PQ still looks incredible)
- Sony Tuner/Amplifier connected to HR20 via Optical
- OTA Antenna: Phillips/Magnavox MANT901
- Antenna mounted pre-amp: Radioshack unit not sure of the exact model
30 miles from Rochester NY stations with a hill between the tower and my house. Also 60 miles from Syracuse NY stations.
- Antenna has a rotor so we can point at either Syracuse or Rochester.
- HR20 connected to internal home network. Receiving media files from a system just running MediaPlayer 11 on XP.
- Network is firewalled through an OS/2 Warp Server running Injoy Firewall.
- RoadRunner Cable modem.

We are pretty hard on the HR20. Frequently having it record two programs at the same time (varies between D* HD, OTA HD, and D* SD. Mostly HD)

We use "Slip: and FF/REW. I love the way slip works. It allows us to stop and view the occasional commercial that we actually want to see. ;)

Occasionally we'll see an OTA dropout but it is no worse than what we had before with the H20. Usually we'll see the occasional dropout when it's windy and the antenna is moving. I would not attribute this to the HR20 but rather my antenna setup.

I have lots of problems (recording, freezing, restarting, CallerID sometimes, IKD, BSOD, etc.). My setup includes:

AT9 dish
5x8 Zinwell (with 7 connections currently used)
Small OTA Radio Shack outdoor antenna (in the eves) split to the HR20 & H20
HR20 (Elvis 2) purchased early October (?)
H20
Sony DTS Receiver (I'll look up the model tonight)
Sony KDS50A2000 TV

I am using component from the HR20 to the TV and optical to the receiver.

HR20 late September install....ox119 now
AT-9 with old Phase 3 dish cabling to surge suppressors to filters to HR20
Component cables to Hitachi 50V500 LCD (circa 2004)
No OTA hookup, all locals we watch come from D*, both HD & SD

No issues since 119 installed....... :hurah:

Latest national software release (10b?)
HDMI out to Denon receiver (I forget the model number)
HDMI from receiver to Sony SXRD 50" tv
5lnb dish to 6x8 multiswitch

The only problem we've had is the occasional lock-up when coming out of standby. And by occasional, I think it's happened twice. Otherwise it's been pretty flawless since we got it in October.

I agree with this approach as there HAS to be some common issue that is causing these glitches on some systems and not others. I know it can't be quality control as it doesn't seem box specific. So there has to be a root cause. Let's hope that D* is working toward a root cause rather than just putting band aids on the boo boo and causing other issues.

My setup
5LNB Dish
Panny 42" HDTV
HR20 (Elvis 2)
HR10 (2 units, at least I THINK that is what the last SD version of D* is)
H10 (last version of SD non DVR receiver - 2 units)
Sony DD/DTS Receiver (not sure of model, about 2 years old I think...no HDMI)
Philips Upconvert DVD player / Magnavox DVD recorder (very old model)

HR20 connected to HDTV with HDMI and to receiver with toslink (optical) cable for sound
HR20 also connected to Maggy recorder with SVideo and red/white RCAs
Using remotes "out of the box" for each compononent.
Have tried OTA with rabbit ears, but no signal, didn't expect any really, was goofing around. I do have MPEG4 locals for NYC demo (ABC,NBC,CBS, FOX) and HD package, NHLCI package, Total Choice Plus and HBO

Issues - none since upgrade to Elvis2, except the prevailing issues since the advent of the box, biggest being autorecord and padding. One Elvis1 had lockups using FF/RW, lockups during channel changing, Keep/Delete lockup, and probably a couple of others.

Using Twonkyvision for media server for the HR20's to Win/XP server
All remotes using IR, RF performance was poor on the HR20's.

Really haven't had any issues, only a couple RBR's required to unfreez box. Have had a couple keep or delete when trying to play back a recording, but not for a couple of months. I've had both HR20's since back in September.

HR20 w/119
5 LNB dish w/5/8 Zinwell Multiswitch
Pioneer 5060 Plasma connected w/HDMI
Yamaha receiver connected with optical cable
Radio Shack fringe antenna w/Channel master 7777 pre-amp

Approximately 25 season passes (or whatever they're called)

I've had the unit for a month with fairly heavy usage. So far just one RBR and 2 padding problems with football games (stopped at 3:40 in both cases)

I'm pleased with the unit. Momentary audio or video glitches which I've experienced with every recorder I've ever had. (Tivo and ReplayTV) I consider them no big deal. As someone has stated before on this board: "It's just a TV show!"

I have had zero problems with it - besides the show 24 on fox LIL the add two picture drop outs for a few seconds, but I think that was the network not the HR20. I got this the very day it was offered in my area and had to do a RBR 3-4 times since I "leased" this box with the first couple software releases. Thats it.

New 5lnb dish installed day after Thanksgiving '06.
Different place on roof than old dish, for wider view of the sky. 4 Cables from it fed eventually into my attic and through a new 6-in/8-out multiswitch. Two outputs RG6 go to living room HR20, with one of them a new cable dropped by the installer. One RG6-out diplexed with OTA antenna to feed master bedroom with H20. One RG6 out diplexed with OTA antenna to feed second bedroom with old SAT-A4 receiver.

New HR20 also on that day. Gets two SAT RG6 inputs and one OTA RG6 input, as well as a network cable from home router. Component to Sanyo 32" CRT HDTV. HDMI output with HDMI-to-DVI cable to 19" Samsung widescreen LCD monitor. SPDIF to Sony 5.1 receiver. SVideo and L/R audio output to Samsung DVD-Recorder.

New H20 also on that day. Diplexer seperates OTA from SAT, and both feed into it. HDMI to Sharp 46" LCD. Svideo output to TIVO series2. SPDIF to Sony 6.1 receiver. L/R RCA audio to TIVO.

I've had no problems with the H20. The HR20 (now 10b) has suffered remote freeze, Nothing recorded, No response on power-up, all fixed with RBR.

I have my HR20 connected to my Hitachi 42HDS69 with a nine dollar HDMI cable. Both B Band converters are hooked up. I receive the OTA locals from Salt Lake City over 100 miles away using a Winegard SquareShooter SS1000 hanging on an inside wall and beefed up by a 25db line amp giving me 100 percent signal strength. I have the AT9 dish and live in a high wind area with peak gusts in excess of 50mph every two or three weeks. Only issues in three months is one rbr and Pinky. Pinky comes around 2 or 3 times a day. I know a lot of people complain about Ironwood, but when they did my install, they sent three guys out to my house and gave me one rock solid professional installation. I can't help but believe a lot of the problems people are having involve bad installs or equipment that for some reason is just not compatible.

I've had the HR20 since October, had a couple of BSoDs in the early days but no real problems for a couple of months. Trick play could be improved and I do see Pinky nearly everytime I use it. I've never had a freeze up or spontaneous reset. I have been running x119 since it was released, without seeing any improvements or issues with it.

I am NOT a power user - which I think is the biggest differentiator between "I am very happy" and "this is a PoS" users.

To me a power user is someone who has NFL ST and/or other premium sports channels, watches a lot of sports "near real time" on both tuners together and probably uses the search function a lot. But isn't Earl a "power user" who doesn't have problems?

My equipment set up is my in sig, though I do swap the HR10 and HR20 around sometimes and on my Samsung TV I have used both HDMI and component without seeing any change in either PQ or reliability. Most of my HR20 recording is on the MPEG 4 LiL satellite channels, with some MPEG 2 HD satellite stuff too. I do use OTA sometimes and it worked as well as the satellite equivalents but now I tend to record OTA on my HR10 so that they back each other up - I sometimes lose OTA signal due to aircraft movements into Dulles and sometimes lose satellite due to weather but rarely in both cases.

I don't think the HR20 is perfect by any means, trick play is still not as good as the HR10 or the UltimateTV I used to use. I admit to being anti-Tivo, never having like the GUI on them and I especially dislike the shape of the peanut remote which I find nearly impossible to use single-handed. The HR20 GUI is not perfect either but I find it much more intuitive than Tivo. Probably the best way to put it is that the HR20 matches the way I watch TV better than the Tivo does.

I do use the Photo and Music features quite a bit, they work OK for me using WMP11 on a 5 year old PC running XP Pro (slowly!). It is nowhere near is good as the XBOX running XBMC though.

HR20 purchased from Best Buy in August 06.
Never reformatted hardrive and have downloaded all the releases except for Santa 1 and 2.
5LNB DISH
Sony LCD rear projection 42A10
hooked up HDMI (monster cable 19ft) for everyday use.
Have tried component, svideo, rca all work fine.
Had dolby issues first few weeks of use but no problems since,
black screen with 10b on occassion, since 0x115 no black screen and since 0x119 series link seems to be fixed for one show that had problems, otherwise no other issues and no random reboots or anything.
OTA is picking up same channels as tv tuner and networking works fine with wmp11. New product so I knew there would be some bugs but this is my first dvr so I have no experience with TIVO but so far I have been happy.

The Toshiba CRT is great for movies. You can't beat it's black-level ability.
I have to admit that some of the newer 1080p sets are looking pretty good now.
Once the prices of the 65" or 70" sets come down, I may consider replacing the set.

New AT9 5lnb dish

My installation was two weeks ago and I've had very few problems. My biggest issues has been with networking.

Every time I attach the box to my network, it becomes very unstable. Within a few minutes of establishing a link (CAT5 cable directly to router) the box requires a RBR. After this it will run, but it is unstable. I have been successful setting up WMP11 to play audio and display pictures, but eventually the box will hang and require a RBR. After I disconnect from the network, do another RBR, the box is rock solid again. Quite frankly there are no networking features that interest me now anyways. The current GUI is not suitable for the large number of files I have (12,000 mp3s). However, the geek in me wants to get this working anyways. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know. For now I just keep it off the network.

Bugs I have seen include:

- Audio drops which happen only on HD programs and only when I am using DD receiver for audio.
- Occasionally I will lose audio on start-up until I change the channel. I turn the box off when not watching TV.
- Once the screen turned all pink, like it was missing blue/green signal. I had to do a RBR to fix this.

GO PATS!! :D

Brand new AT9 5lnb dish.
Brand new multi-switch (too damn cold out to go look for a brand name!)
Distance from dish to multi-switch -- 125 ft. (new cable)
Distance from multi-switch to HR-20 -- 30 ft. (new cable)
0x10b software (when it went national, not before!)
HDMI out hooked to Sony SXRD 50" RP LCD TV
Component out hooked through 25 ft. component cables to RCA 36" CRT TV in bedroom.
S-Video & composite audio out hooked to Sony DVD recorder.
Optical audio out hooked to JVC DD 5.1 receiver.

I have had to rbr 3 times due to remote freeze...that's it, end of issues! No BSOD's, no delete/save issues, no issues with any recordings at all! I do not use OTA (I live in the middle of a woods, and I'm too far away from locals anyway, if the signal could get through all the trees!). I have MPEG4 locals from D*. I have never used the network connection, I decided to wait until the stability issues I keep reading about are better resolved. Besides, I stream music and video from my network to my XBox 360 (which performs these duties magnificently, by the way), and I also stream music from 1 of my PC's directly to the JVC receiver. I never force a download of new software (afraid of screwing up MY HR-20, why mess with a good thing!). I do not use an external eSATA drive, the internal drive has been large enough so far...as soon as I record a movie on the DVR, I record it to DVD and erase it. I don't think I've ever been below 50% capacity available. The PQ on both TVs is magnificent, I've never experienced any audio dropout or video pixelation, outside of a storm, which is normal. I'm completely happy with the HR-20! ;)

I haven't participated here, but my configuration is listed.

More importantly, I'd like to see a thread on connectivity (what connections you use, what kind and cost of cables, etc.) I still think many of the HR20 problems would vanish if the cheap $6.00 cables were replaced with good cables.

Some for sure.... the really sad part is you can get a really good HDMI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI cable (depending on your setup) with gold contacts at 28AWG and double shielding for under $10 at Monoprice. You can also get quality Toslink optical audio cables for under $8 there.

Dish/Setup:

AT9-Four outputs about 15' to WB68
From WB68 2 outputs about 50' to Living Room HR20
From WB68 2 outputs about 60' to Basement HR20

Living Room HR20:

Panasonic 50U
Video: HR20 to TV via HDMI
Audio: toslink from HR20 to Sony HT in a box

Basement HR20:

Panasonic 60U
Video: HR20 to TV via HDMI
Audio: toslink from HR20 to Sony A/V

I have had few problems. Maybe 3-4 Black Screen Lock-Ups
No missed recordings
I don't use OTA
A few Audio drops. Annoying more than anything.
I've had to do maybe 2-3 RBR
Never had a problem coming out of "standby" or turning the unit on

I haven't participated here, but my configuration is listed.

More importantly, I'd like to see a thread on connectivity (what connections you use, what kind and cost of cables, etc.) I still think many of the HR20 problems would vanish if the cheap $6.00 cables were replaced with good cables.

My Audio optic cable is "Monster" brand

My HDMI cable is actually HDMI to DVI. Not sure of a brand since it was brought when they hooked it up.

Thats pretty much it.

 My first post, but I have to ask - how can anything after the HR20 effect how the HR20 operates? I have the 5-LNB disk. I don't think there is anything special or unusual with how it connects to my HR20. I didn't install it. I can only assume DTV installed it correctly. I forced 0119 to my HR20. I really don't think it operates any better than before. I don't think my TV, DVD or stereo causes my HR20 to do (or not do, if you will) what it does to infuriate me so.

In theory it probably shouldn't. But sometimes reality kicks in.
