He has to have painted it himself. The buttons are silver. The buttons on the black HR20 are black.

I smell a rat:lol: Who would want to PAINT a DVR though? Maybe while sitting around the house one rainy Saturday, one looks at the Silver HR20, and says I'm gonna paint that sh*t black:eek2: Just hope you don't need a replacement from D*, as they would be like "What the funk is up wit dis?"
Maybe he's not an A list like many of us...........he is an ELITE list customer:D
I see my HR20 being Dtv blue in the future.

Thanks for your comments.
Now for a Public Service Announcement.
Do not refinish your Directv HR20. I am not encouraging you nor am I instructing you on how to refinish your Directv HR20 DVR. Refinishing your HR20 has the potential to cause operational problems, impact the status a warranty or extended service agreement. Consult Directv if you have any questions regarding the HR20 finish and its maintenance.
And now for something completely different.
The finish on my HR20 is custom DIY job. The original silver finish was unintentionally damaged by a well meaning soul who used an inappropriate furniture cleaner/polish. The cleaner did a number on the micro-thin silver finish so I told DTV of the damage and that the unit was going to be refinished.
The finish on the primary unit is high quality enamel satin black spray paint hand rubbed with high grade automotive polish. In the picture the buttons are silver with the DTV logo in blue and white. Since this photo was taken the buttons are now in gloss black and the DTV logo is dark gray and white. Logo and other text on the unit are all custom made decals.
I still would like to have one of the new black HR20 now available from Directv.

1953,
That was a smooth one though, are you impressed with how quickly your "Black Finish" was sniffed out:lol: I understand the damage of the finish, and realize that maybe it was the "other" part of your relationship:D My wife knows not to touch my electronics.....................it works well for us. In the pic it looks like a nice job though. Will D* cover it if the unit needs to be replaced:confused:
I have closed my thread.
Unfortunately, the intent of my simple little thread was misunderstood. It is not and never was my intention to pass off my HR20 as a authentic Directv HR20-700B (Black).
I regret any inconvenience or confusion this message may have caused and as I stated previously, do not refinish your HR20.

I purchased a 3 1/2 " X 17" X 1/8 " glass, placed sticky contact paper where the IR receiver and Led's are located. I painted the glass black removed the contact paper then placed the glass in a frame in front of my receiver. The receiver now matches all the other black A/V equipment in my built-in shelving.
