China Central Television - Satellite

A client of ours based in Birmingham wants to receive any of the chinese CCTV channels (preferably ch 5) and not the European versions. (ch 4 / ch 9). I need to know which satellite - presumably based over china is responsible for distributing CCTV then i need to see if the footprint is large enough to be picked up in the uk.

And me, I want to see all those cool channels that are broadcast from the satellites over Europe. We share the same problem -- the earth gets in the way. Since all the geostationary satellites are over the equator, every person on earth is always blocked from seeing over half of them.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the ocean. :)

could anyone tell me which satellites are available to be "seen" from the UK? is it any satellite within a certain range eg 70 W to 70 E.

From a spot (52.13 N, 1.4 W) close to Coventry, you can see from SBS6 (74 W) to PAS4 (72 E). Two important caveats:

* Elevation angle. At the edges of that range, the elevation angle is less than 2 degrees. In practice, anything less than 15 degrees can be tricky to implement, not to mention the long line of sight required.

* Satellite footprint. The fact that you can see a satellite doesn't mean much unless that satellite is also "looking" at you. Some of the PAS4 transponders point back to Coventry, but SBS6 is strictly North American. Check LyngSat's footprint maps for satellite transponders of interest to see whether you could expect to pick up anything if you pointed in that direction.
