I've had my R15-500 a few months now and up until the last couple of weeks my only issues were it didn't want to start up one day necessitating physically pulling the plug and with the SL first-run problems with the Simpsons, Mythbusters and CSI. Things are starting to change for the worse. It was in standby mode last night and recording Extras on HBO. I tried turning it on and it immediately gave me the prompt to "keep, stop and delete" etc. I told it to keep recording and the prompt kept coming back in an endless loop. I decided to leave it alone and let it finish recording. It did come back to life after it was done.
Later on, the wife put on HGTV and saw something she liked and tried to back up in the live buffer to see it again. She couldn't figure out the remote to do it. The trickplay buttons are just way too small and in the wrong place on the remote. The hand naturally gravitates to the center and those big buttons. I took the remote and backed up and hit play. Nothing happened. The picture was stuck and wouldn't move no matter what I did. Had to switch to another channel and back again, losing the built up live buffer on her show. This, of course, did not make her happy.
In the last couple of weeks, I have also seen issues with black screen on play back of pre-recorded shows and fast forwarding without updating the current relative position in the time bar at the bottom. On the other hand, it hasn't missed taping any of my shows, just made them something of a pain to watch later. The net effect is that instead of liking this thing more and more as I get know it, I am liking it less and less. It really gives me pause to think of replacing my two HR10-250s with HR20s. I know I'll have to do it soon to watch my Mets in HD on SNY, but this experience hasn't given me great confidence in the ability of D* to design a competent DVR.
