I assume 3.1.x is a pretty old software version? I couldn't find a reference to it on this forum, but that's what the HR10 I just bought used has. I have the phone line connected...why hasn't it been updated in the week since I bought it?

Could someone point me to a thread that discusses the differences between 3.1 and 6.3(a or b)?

Thanks.

DirecTV only updates a certain number of receivers each night.

Also, with the number of people reporting problems about 6.3b, you might want to unplug the phone line to prevent the update from happening until a more stable version is released.

As far as the differences, 6.3 gives an option to use folders in the Now Playing List for all shows where you have more than one recording.

It also speeds up the Guide and the menus slightly.

Thanks Bruce. My old(er) R10 had the folders...I have to say that was a nice feature. The guide is slow as molasses on this one, but you're right, better to keep it away from 6.3

Thanks again.

As a voice for the other side, I'll have to say that my HR10-250 is working just fine with 6.3b. It also worked well with 6.3a which is the one that really messed up OTA recording (I don't record OTA). What really messed up a while ago was DirecTV's service data that caused all TiVo DVRs to miss SPs.

I concur with jdspencer. My two units running 6.3b have been fine (other than the service data problem).

Have the service data and OTA issues been resolved with 6.3b? I presume if I forced a call that is the version I would get...not 6.3a?

The service data problem was not limited to 6.3x, it was all Tivo units and has been fixed temporarily by DTV. I've been on 6.3b for about a month and haven't seen any OTA dropout problems. Yes, if you get anything you will get 6.3b but I'm not sure if 6.3b is national yet or if they're still rolling it out.

Well, I'll just wait then. The unit is hooked to the phone line and has been for several weeks. It's still 3.1.5 in there. I suppose it'll get updated on its own at some point? I'm not going to worry about it, though I would prefer the folders in now playing, but that's not a huge deal.
