I am having trouble with the audio optical out on my VIP 622.
In the past, I had used the R & L RCA audio out jacks in the back of the 622 to feed my surround sound processor. It worked fine. But seeing that the 622 supports optical out, I decided to use that. I unplugged the RCA audio jacks feeding from the 622. I hooked up the optical out jack on the 622, to the optical in jack on my surround sound processor. I am unable to get any audio.
I checked the 622 manual, and came up with nothing. I checked the manual for my Surround Sound Processor (Sony STR-K840P) and came up with nothing. I swapped out the new optical cable with another one. Still nothing.
I thought it was just plug & play, but maybe I missed something on the processor or the 622.
Am I doing all I am suppose to on the 622?
Thanks

I don't think you have to do anything on the 622 as all of it's outputs are all active all the time. On my Pioneer receiver, though, I had to specify what type of audio connection it was getting for that particular set of inputs (for the TV/SAT inputs you could select either RCA, optical or digital coaxial). Once I did that, I had sound! Don't know if your receiver is anything like that but thought I would throw in what I had to do with mine.

I have a Sony receiver as well. You need to choose Optical in the menu of the Sony

Yep.. most likely a setting on your receiver. Usually Analog/Digital type of setting or you may also have to associate a given optical input with your receiver's selection. With my Pioneer Elite I have to say.. Optical one is for TV in the setup. I definitely would start at the receiver end.

You will need to go into the audio setup on your receiver. Many receivers will have at least two optical inputs and you will need to tell it which one is on the satellite feed.
This may be too obvious... but if you want to make sure the optical output is active, plug a cable into the 622 and see if you can see the red light at the other end.
If you can't see the red, then there's a problem with the output or your cable.

Actually not too obvious and something that should have been included in the troubleshooting. Good fill in RLMesq. :)

I want to thank every one for helping me. I found the problem and fixed it yesterday. It was in my surround sound receiver. I can not toggle on and off different inputs (like most processors can). What I found (and this is *NOT* in the manual) was that the optical connection is hard wired to input # 2 only. I have 5 inputs on this processor. Why the optical is tied to input # 2 only is a mystery to me. But once I figured that out, everything was golden.
I have several Sony audio and video products. I have a Sony CRT HD TV that has a picture that is with out peers. And my opinion of the Sony manuals for the products I have is quite good. Even a cut above the rest IMHO. But the manual for the Surround Sound processor I have is just useless. It is total garbage.
I have only one thing left to figure out. The processor will display set up information on my TV screen. Ha! Yea, when pigs fly out of my ass.
Anyway the sound is outstanding. I am a happy camper. Thanks again everyone for the many tips.
