View Full Version : Lots of black screen problems with 0x11b, anyone else got them?
Since 0x11b, I have been getting black screens regularly. This will be on live TV, The remote works and channels change I get menus, but all of the screens are black. Occasionally I have found a random channel that is working correctly, but it is not clearly only MPEG2 or MPEG4 channels. Never saw this bug this way before. I'm not talking about recordings (the unwatchable bug), I'm talking about live TV.
I had been fairly stable the last coule revs, but I've had to reset several times now since 0x11b due to this issue alone.
Anyone else seeing this?

How long are you waiting after the channel change, to determin that something is wrong?

I had something simular to this happen to me last week. I did the forced download of the new software and I was watching a local HD channel before I did the download. Everything downloaded ok and the channel came back up. But, when I switched to a different channel other than a local HD channel the screen was black and no sound. I tried several different channels, and turning the HR20 off and on. That didn't work. So I did a rbr and that seemed to fix it. I don't know what happened. But, I have not seen it sense then.

I actually had this happen yesterday. We have had our unit since we moved houses in September, and it has been relatively bug-free (although had complete Optical output hardware breakdown, DTV sent a replacement). I haven't been forcing any downloads, I prefer stable over cutting edge (or at least my wife does). I got home last nightt, my wife informed me, quite indgnantly, that she had been unable to watch anything. Upon further inspection, only OTA HD channels were showing up. Was just like you say, banners showed up just fine, a picture never appeared. To make it more bizarre, no OTA or regualr recordings would play either, again, play bar showed at the bottom, but nothing else. Rebooted the machine, everything appeared in working order, and the most bizarre thing was that all recordings that were done yesterday on all channels played error free. I am using HDMI to my HDMI switching receiver, and audio via optical output (audio played fine).
Had to actually register here, this was the first time I really had anything to contribute :)

With my BSOD's I don't even get menus or channel banners, I get NOTHING! The "pretty" blue lights on the front of my HR20 blink in response to my remote, but alas, nothing happens. A RBR fixes it, but I never had a BSOD until this release and I have been using my HR20 since Sept.

I was getting BSB on a regular basis when the unit was in standby mode. I kept the unit on and not on standby for the last couple of days. So far no BSB.
Is anybody getting BSB when the unit stys on?
I haven't been getting any black screens.
I sometimes get a black screen for 5 + seconds when I change channels. It will eventually go to the channel, but it is aggravating because my other non HR 20 units switch immediately.
Earl, waiting doesn't help me. The couple times it has happened, it has been after I turned the unit on. Next time I will try turning it on and off a couple times.
(I turn the unit off, as the TV and DVR are in a cabinet, and I want minimum heat buildup in there.)
Perhaps this is a new and different bug? It's no the "Unwatchable" and it's not the stand Black Screen of Death. I'd call it the "Black Screen Live TV" bug...
Should we add it or is this already covered?

Got my first since 10b today. (Black screen recording) Very dissapointing. I had high hopes after the upgrade.
it appears I'm still a Ginea Pig who paid $299 for the priviledge.

Always remember that it may appear to be a black screen. Just try fast forwarding and see if the picture eventually appears. You can then rewind to the beginning and it will work fine.

Not one black screen problem with 0x11B since downloading last Friday. Much much improved after several black screens & RBRs with 0x10B and 0x119.
Sure we understood why there is still so much variability across these HR20's. But I'm happy that mine is working well right now.

Yeah, I know the routine. (not quite a newbie anymore) It was a genuine black screen recording.....
Thanks for trying though ;)

I absolutely understand your optimism. I was right there with you up until today. I forced the 11b software last saturday. it was sublime up until today.
I had problems like this with 10b until I got into the practice of rebooting at night before bedtime every day. it eliminated almost all issues, I stopped doing this after downloading 11b in order to test the release's robustness.
Back to the daily reboot! :)
I can deal with most issues. Missed recordings are not one of them. I work rotating shifts and the only way I can watch any of the few shows I enjoy is through DVR. My DirecTivo spoiled me over the last 5 years. If this stuff continues once LOST returns next month and I miss an episode I might become VERY upset ;)
I've also gotten the black screen several times since 011b. For me, it always occurs after coming out of standby, as others have also noted. IIRC, the MPEG4 locals all still work, but none of the other channels work.
I've noticed that some channels sometimes take up to 5 seconds to come in, but in the above cases, I've waited >30 seconds with no picture. The menues and banners all work. Recorded programs have not worked. RBR fixes everything.
Some of the posters seemed to have missed my comment at the beginning of the thread... I'm NOT talking about recordings. I'm talking about a black screen during live TV.

Apparently so
I have yet to experience your issue. You have my condolences though.
I'd suggest not putting your HR-20 in standby, rebooting daily and avoiding any active/interactive channels. I'm betting this resolves almost all problems. It's not what we should expect, but it's what does the trick (at least for me during my 10b days)
My !@#$!! HR20 (11b) just froze with 4 seconds remaining in the Duke/Clemson game!
I am now RBR 11b once day!
The worst version by far for me! Hell, I'll take 10b over this crappy version.

Black screen including recorded shows. Full menus and options, just no video or audio.

I woke up this morning and both my HR20's had black screens. I could get the guide, and change the channels, but no video or sound, just a nice black screen. A reset got them both back on track.

I had a self induced black screen last night. I tried to tune to my OTA 11-1 that has been
having PSIP problems and that was all that it took.
I could do other things, like the recording of CSI NY kept going and finished fine, I verified I could watch it.
I could stream JPG's from my ASUS/AMD PC. Just no picture or sound.
I waited until the recording was over and then I reset it with the remote.

I downloaded 11b last Friday and I've had multiple black screen problems in the last week:
1. I was playing the Colts/Patriots game, delayed, while it was sill recording. I realized that it wasn't going to record the end. So, I changed the record settings to add another hour. The playback picture went black. However, I was able to rewind until a picture showed up then continue playback. The soft pad did record longer than the original ending time, but not an extra hour as requested. I ONLY saw the end to the game because of the buffer.
2. Once, a playback went black. Another time, playback was black at the start. Both times I was able to rewind or fast forward to get a picture, then continue to watch the program without another problem.
3. Tonight, I brought the HR20 out of standby to find all channels were black. I checked my HR10 and it was fine. So, I rebooted the HR20 and everything was right again.

Two black screen recordings of The Office tonight. Second recording shows current position of 0:-29. Haven't seen that in quite a while. Pretty frustrating.
Lock up tonight, deleted an Office i was watching from Dec...and missed CSI due to a lockup ....

I've noticed exactly the same thing and on both of my HR-20s. Up until this release HDMI was my only issue. This has hit each unit twice in the last 3 days, at different times though so it doesn't seem related to outside events.
I have to RBR everyday to get my channels to come on. The XM part works but not the other channels. It happened only sometimes until this last update, now its everyday. My recorded channels work fine (knock on wood) and I haven't lost any of those while recording. I just can't seem to get this to work normally on a daily basis. Guess we will have to wait to see what is coming up next. Can't wait.
